Differential calculus on quantum spaces and quantum groups

A review of recent developments in the quantum differential calculus. The quantum group GL[sub q](n) is treated by considering it as a particular quantum space. Functions on SL[sub q] (n) are defined as a subclass of functions on GL[sub q](n). The case of SO[sub q](n) is also briefly considered. These notes cover part of a lecture given at the XIX International Conference on Group Theoretic Methods in Physics, Salamanca, Spain 1992.

A streamlined method for chiral fermions on the lattice

We discussed the use of renormalization counterterms to restore the chiral gauge symmetry in a lattice theory of Wilson fermions. We show that a large class of counterterms can be implemented automatically by making a simple modification to the fermion determinant.

Investigation of PACVD protective coating processes using advanced diagnostics techniques

Coherent anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy (CARS) is used to study the plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition (PACVD) of TiB{sub 2}. CARS is applied to the dominent species in an inductively coupled B{sub 2}H{sub 6}/Ar rf plasma. Axial concentration profiles of diborane and hydrogen are probed in the plasma. A five-step mechanism is developed. Photochemical initiation of the chemical reaction is considered. 16 refs, 5 figs.(DLC)

Thermal effects on the frequency response of piezoelectric crystals

In this paper we describe a solution strategy to determine the natural frequencies of piezoelectric crystals subject to moderate changes in temperature and a variety of boundary constraints. The finite element equations governing piezoelectricity are derived based upon a Galerkin formulation of the problem. Suitable assumptions are made to linearize the steady-state (static) problem leading to an iteration scheme that can be used to refine the solution and include non-linear geometric effects caused by deformation. The eigenvalue problem is cast in this perturbed state to allow more accurate prediction of resonant frequencies.

An overview of the Yucca Mountain Global/Regional Climate Modeling Program

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has developed a site characterization plan (SCP) to collect detailed information on geology, geohydrology, geochemistry, geoengineering, hydrology, climate, and meteorology (collectively referred to as ``geologic information``) of the Yucca Mountain site. This information will be used to determine if a mined geologic disposal system (MGDS) capable of isolating high-level radioactive waste without adverse effects to public health and safety over 10,000 years, as required by regulations 40 CFR Part 191 and 10 CFR Part 60, could be constructed at the Yucca Mountain site. Forecasts of future climates conditions for the Yucca Mountain area will be based on both empirical and numerical techniques. The empirical modeling is based on the assumption that future climate change will follow past patterns. In this approach, paleclimate records will be analyzed to estimate the nature, timing, and probability of occurrence of certain climate states such as glacials and interglacials over the next 10,000 years. For a given state, key climate parameters such as precipitation and temperature will be assumed to be the same as determined from the paleoclimate data. On the Q{sup 2} Variation of Spin-Dependent Deep-Inelastic Electron Proton Scattering

We suggest a phenomenological model describing the sum rules for the real and virtual polarized photon absorption on the nucleon. The contribution of the isobar delta-(1232) electroproduction, essential at small Q{sup 2}, has been subtracted quantitatively. The model predictions are compared with the results of the EMC polarized structure function measurements on the photon.
