Multiwire proportional chamber for imaging thermal, epicadmium, and fast neutrons (open access)

Multiwire proportional chamber for imaging thermal, epicadmium, and fast neutrons

From nuclear science symposium; San Francisco, California, USA (14 Nov 1973). The 25 cm x 25 cm chamber described images thermal and epicadmium neutron beams using two boron-coated conversion screens, and fast neutrons using a single polyethylene converter, Sample images and quantitative attenuation and resolution data are presented, Measurements of neutron attenuation in lucite patterns give good agreement with expected values for thermal, epicadmium, and fast (Pu- Be) beams. The measured mean free energy. This gives good agreement with the experimental data for tracks longer than approx equal 15 mu m (alphas and 160 ions of energies 5.3 to 8.8 MeV and 22 to 42 MeV, respectively). The shorter tracks of fission fragments (90 MeV from /sup 252/Cf) give shorter t/sub p/ values than predicted by the formula above. This is explained by transfer from cylindrical to spherical erosion geometry. (auth)

Neutral-beam research and development at LBL, Berkeley (open access)

Neutral-beam research and development at LBL, Berkeley

The neutral-beam research and development effort at LLL has been concerned mainly with design, construction, and testing of ion sources needed in present and planned experiments, chiefly at LLL. Development of techniques for producing reactor-type neutral beam systems with higher voltage, current, and duty cycle proceeds as resources permit. An important part of this program is the attempt to increase the physics understanding and technology needed for the design of beams with precisely controlled trajectories, e.g., converging beams. Plutonium and environmental metals in man. Interlaboratory meeting, May 9, 1973 (open access)

Plutonium and environmental metals in man. Interlaboratory meeting, May 9, 1973

From plutonium and environmental metals in man conference; Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA (9 May 1973). The various aspects of handling human autopsy tissues and methods used for the determination of Pu in tissues are discussed. Types of cases are classified as: the general population, with no known exposure to actinide elements; former AEC personnel which had an exposure potential; and Transuranium Registry cases representing known exposures to Pu and other actinides. It is pointed out that 5 millirem/yr has been proposed as the maximum permissible level of Pu for the general human population, which is equal to approximately thrvee 1 mu m particles of Pu deposited per person per year and the analytical chemist is confronted with what appears to be an almost insurmountable task to detect this level of Pu in man. The interlaboratory calibration of counting methods, using standards of /sup 239/Pu, /sup 238/Pu, and /sup 236/Pu plated on stainle ss steel or samples of ashed beef bone, liver, and lung spiked with /sup 239/Pu, is discussed. Methods used for the chemical preparation of the ashed tissue samples for radiometric analysis are reported. (CH)

Preliminary Assessment of Corrosion Product Transport in Fusion Reactors (open access)

Preliminary Assessment of Corrosion Product Transport in Fusion Reactors

Corrosion which is tolerable from the standpoint of system mechanical integrity may cause substantial problems if the corrosion product is released and deposited at locations where it interferes with heat transfer or coolant flow. Furthermore, neutrons from the fusion reaction activate the corrosion product, causing radiation fields in maintenance areas near piping and components where the activated material deposits. Preliminary estimates suggest that formidable problems may occur in a lithium-cooled stainless steel primary circuit due to corrosion product deposition. If the estimated order of magnitude is confirmed in future studies, new concepts in corrosion control or corrosion product removal would need to be developed for lithium-cooled stainless steel CTR systems. Other fusion reactor system concepts and materials appear to offer alternatives which tend to minimize corrosion product transport. (auth)

Characteristics of multiwire proportional chambers for positron imaging (open access)

Characteristics of multiwire proportional chambers for positron imaging

Multiwire proportional chambers (MWPC) designed for use in a positron camera for nuclear medicine applications are described. The coordinated of the two anihilation gamma rays are detected in the chamber by their interaction with thin lead converters placed on both faces of each chamber. In order to obtain reasonable efficiencies (10%) the lead converters have been made in a square honeycomb-like structure, which increases the effective surface area and also permits the application of a drift field to extract the electrons into the active area of the MWPC. Modular multi-wire readout system for proportional wire chambers (open access)

Modular multi-wire readout system for proportional wire chambers

From nuclear science symposium; San Francisco, California, USA (14 Nov 1973). The design features of a data readout system for multiwire proportional chambers are described. The electronic circuitry for this amplifier-per-wire'' system has been designed in modular form to provide ease in system assembly, flexibility, and economy. Fast readout of the hit-pattern data is accomplished by using priority encoder integrated circuits for address generation and bit- parallel transfer of the output data words. About 7000 channels have been implemented using this system and an additional 4000 channels have been ordered. An analysis of cost per channel is given, based on the experience gained thus far. Variables effecting ozone treatment of physical-chemical effluent (open access)

Variables effecting ozone treatment of physical-chemical effluent

The treatment of raw sewage from an on-site apartment area was investigated in a series of laboratory experiments in which changes in turbidity, pH, total organic carbon, chemical oxygen demand, and, in some cases, biochemical oxygen demands were determined. Raw sewage, but mainly the effluent following physical-chemical treatment, was examined for improvement in discharge quality by ozone treatment in combination with oxygen sparging, ionizing gamma radiation from /sup 60/Co heating, acidifying, and several other variables. The average composition of the raw sewage was a TOC of 125 ppM (range from 65 to 240), COD of 190 ppM (range from 85 to 475), turbidity of 145 J. U. (range from 60 to 350), and pH of 7.3 (range from 6.5 to 8.4). Physical chemical treatment usually consisted of the addition of CaO (to pH 11) and FeCl/sub 3/ as a coagulant aid in an inclined tube followed by course filtration; typical treatment time was 15 minutes giving an average reduction in TOC and COD of 40 to 60%. Subsequent treatment was usually performed with 200 cm/sup 3/ samples of the effluent in fine and course fritted bubblers. The combination of radiation plus ozone gave the largest reduction of TOC and COD. …

Apparatus for testing direct energy conversion of plasma energy to electricity (open access)

Apparatus for testing direct energy conversion of plasma energy to electricity

The Lawrence Livermore Laboratory program for research and development of direct energy conversion for fusion reactor application is described. A new test facility consisting of a system of magnets, a vacuum chamber, and collector structure of unusual shapes and sizes is described. Under laboratory conditions, the anticipated collection efficiencies are 65% for a 2-stage venetian blind collector concept and 89 to 90% for a 22stage peropdoc focussing concept. Because of space charge considerations, the venetian blind concept appears to be appropriate in the 100- to 200-keV ion energy range whereas the periodic focussing concept is more interesting in the 500- to 800-keV range. Computer-controlled sampling system for airborne radionuclides

From nuclear science symposium; San Francisco, California, USA (14 Nov 1973). A computer-controlled air sampling system has been designed and is presently being constnacted. The self-contained, mobile system will collect and record data from eight meteorological sensors. This information will be used in the study of resuspen airborne activity. Air sampler operation will be based on comparisons between the meteorological data and the sampling criteria selected by the operator at the beginning of the run. Correlation between meteorological parameters and resuspension will be used to develop a predictive model. A description of system hardware and a discussion of the software concept are included.
