Phase-Specific Damage Tolerance of a Eutectic High Entropy Alloy

Article describes how phase-specific damage tolerance was investigated for the AlCoCrFeNi2.1 high entropy alloy with a lamellar microstructure of L12 and B2 phases. Distinct differences in micro-scale deformation mechanisms were reflected in post-compression fractography, with L12-phase cantilevers showing typical characteristics of ductile failure, including the activation of multiple slip lanes, shear lips at the notch edge, and tearing inside the notch versus quasi-cleavage fracture with cleavage facets and a river pattern on the fracture surface for the B2-phase cantilevers.

Temperature dependent rate coefficients for the gas-phase OH + Furan-2,5-dione (C4H2O3, maleic anhydride) reaction (open access)

Temperature dependent rate coefficients for the gas-phase OH + Furan-2,5-dione (C4H2O3, maleic anhydride) reaction

Authors of the article assert that rate coefficients, k1(T), for the gas-phase reaction of the OH radical with Furan-2,5-dione (maleic anhydride (MA), C4H2O3), a biomass burning related compound, were measured under pseudo first-order conditions in OH using the pulsed laser photolysis - laser induced fluorescence method over a range of temperature and bath gas pressure. Their results are compared with a previous room temperature relative rate study of the OH + MA reaction and significant discrepancy between the studies is discussed. This is the accepted manuscript version of the published article.

Reconstructing horizontal gene flow network to understand prokaryotic evolution (open access)

Reconstructing horizontal gene flow network to understand prokaryotic evolution

Article says that horizontal gene transfer (HGT) is a major source of phenotypic innovation and a mechanism of niche adaptation in prokaryotes. Methods for detecting HGT can be classified into phylogenetic-based and parametric or composition-based approaches, so authors exploited the complementary strengths of both the approaches to construct a high confidence horizontal gene flow network. The scale-free horizontal gene flow network presented here provides new insights into modes of transfer for the exchange of genetic information and also illuminates differential gene flow across phyla.

Novel 2D Dynamic Elasticity Maps for Inspection of Anisotropic Properties in Fused Deposition Modeling Objects (open access)

Novel 2D Dynamic Elasticity Maps for Inspection of Anisotropic Properties in Fused Deposition Modeling Objects

Article introducing a novel ultrasonic non-destructive and non-invasive elastography method demonstrated to evaluate the mechanical properties of fused deposition modeling 3D printed objects using two-dimensional dynamical elasticity mapping. Based on the recently investigated dynamic bulk modulus and effective density imaging technique, an angle-dependent dynamic shear modulus measurement was performed to extract the dynamic Young’s modulus distribution of the FDM structures. The elastographic image analysis demonstrated the presence of anisotropic dynamic shear modulus and dynamic Young’s modulus existing in the fused deposition modeling 3D printed objects. The non-destructive method also differentiated samples with high contrast property zones from that of low contrast property regions. The angle-dependent elasticity contrast behavior from the ultrasonic method was compared with conventional and static tensile tests characterization. A good correlation between the nondestructive technique and the tensile test measurements was observed.
