Interview with Eleanor MacDonald discussing her early life and education in New England; her early career in the Cancer Division in the American College of Surgeons; her recruitment and subsequent work at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute; her work in developing the biostatistics coding in the early years of the institution; and her relationship with various physicians and luminaries of the Texas Medical Center.

Sumphai leh Rangleng [Sumphai and Rangleng] as told by Sankhil Thampol Khularnu of of Thamlakhuren, Part 1. Sumphai was a hardworking sister of Rangleng, but she was despised by the lazy wife of Rangleng, who nagged her husband into selling her off so that they could be alone. As the husband went to sell Sumphai, while they spent the night in a riverbank, the sister Sumphai had a dream in which their mother appeared. The mother was talking to the brother and asking him what on earth he was doing. The mother told him not sell his sister but to go back home. When Sumphai recalled her dream to her brother, he was even more furious and took a strong stand to sell her off.

Theipaa leh rumnu paomin [The Story of Squirrel and Rumnu] as narrated by Sankhil Thampol Khularnu. Squirrel [Theipa] pretended that he fell down and hurt his scrotum and so could not walk. He therefore asked Rumnu to carry him in her basket which was full of fig-like fruit [didit]. When she carried him in her basket, he ate up all the figlike fruit and jumped out of her basket and ran off. She was so angry that she cursed him so that he would be trapped in the traps set by people in olden times. Then while he was running, an insect [Uisoom] caught him. So Rumnu asked Uisoon to please keep catching Theipa the squirrel. Rumnu said, “I will weave for you these kinds of cloth, a diphun, a vausen, a diir, a pundum, a kniksen, a yeb, a kniktxil. While Theipa was still in the grip so Uisoon, Rumnu then caught hold of him and beat him to her heart's content. So the story ends, but it is believed that this is how the weaving of different patterns and design of the present day attire came about.

Lamkang Suk Paomin [The story of the Lamkang Hunter] as told by Sankhil Thamnung Tholungnu. This is a story of how a Lamkang man who was a an expert hunter was captured and enslaved by the Kukis. When they planned to kill him, he was encouraged by his wife to escape. A tiger helped him cross the river and eventually return home to be united with his children.

Wangchen paomin [The Story of When there is No Graveyard] as told by Sankhil Thamnung Tholungnu of of Thamlakhuren. In this story, a woman marries and lives in a village that has no graveyard. She ends up marrying into this village and here they eat a person when they die.

The Thamptlum paomin [the Story of Thamptlum] as told by Sankhil Thamnung Tholungnu of Thamlakhuren. The story tells of how a snake married a woman. Translated into English and input in SayMore by Sumshot Khular.

Raapa Paomin [The Story of Raapa] as narrated by Sankhil Thampol Khularnu. This is a story about a young handsome man called Raapa. He was the son of a widow. He was known for his good deeds and for that people got jealous and tried to kill him in several ways. One time they hung him up in the middle of the sea to die, but to his great luck a bird called Chinraang came along wearing beautiful ornament called vori kangkool. This ornament is worn by Lamkangs today. When Raapa saw the bird he started to swing back and forth and sing. On seeing this, the bird came under his spell and wanted to ride the swing. The bird then requested Raapa to let him swing. Raapa allowed the bird to do that and in return the bird allowed Raapa to wear the vori kangkool. Raapa returned home wearing the beautiful ornament. The people there liked the ornament and when they asked him about it he responded that he got it from the sea and all the people rushed to the sea and died in search of a similar ornament. An old lady later came to ask Raapa why …

Skinyernu and Penpenjur [The Bad Woman and Good Woman] as told by Sankhil Thampol Khularnu. In this story, a lady who was very good and industrious, Penpenjur, was killed by a bad woman, Skinyernu. Later Skinyernu played the role of the wife of Penpenjur, whom she had killed. However, the first wife, Penpenjur, was reborn to fight with the bad woman. The good woman won the fight, but the good woman killed again with the poison from the banana leaf that was used to wrap a food pack, a banana that grew out of the bad woman. In the end of the story, the husband and wife met in the land of the death, but as they were to go to their final destiny, the man laughed and this caused them to be separated. In order to get around being separated, they grew as two separate but joined at the upper branches, like a tree and climber.

Chuva Leh Khava [Chuva and Khava] as told by Sankhil Thamnung Tholungnu of Thamlakhuren village. Translated into English and inputting into SayMore by Sumshot Khular.

Sumshot Khular translates a recording of the story of Soombeel as told by Sankhil Thampol Khularnu of Thamlakhuren village. Soombeel is known for her beauty and wit in the Lamkang traditional folk stories.

Retelling of Manhen Paomin [the story of the Slave Girl] part 2 as told by Thampol Khularnu Sankhil.

Interview with Elliott Ross who joined the U.S. Navy during World War II. He discusses being a landing craft coxswain carrying troops and supplies from ships to the shore in seven invasions: Guam, Leyte, Luzon, Santacristo, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and as an occupation force in Japan after the surrender. He talks mostly about Guam, Leyte, Luzon, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and Japan, but also mentions burials at sea and on the beachs, seeing his brother's ship get hit by torpedoes, and the emotional toll of the war.

Interview with James "Herb" Macia of San Antonio, Texas, who is a veteran of the United States Armed Forces during World War Two. In the interview, Mr. Macia recalls memories about growing up as well as his days as a mining engineer, the Doolittle Raid, North Africa, Normandy, and D-Day.

Interview with Arwin Bowden, a marine during World War II. He begins by discussing his training in San Diego and New Zealand before the Battle of Tarawa. He describes being wounded in the battle, the casualties he saw, and being shipped back to Pearl Harbor for treatment before joining the battle of Saipan. He describes ancedotes about Japanese killing themselves rather than surrendering, eating food from a garden watered from rainwater running down from outhouses, the wages he made, and the time he had leave.

Interview with Jack Kleiss, a pilot during World War II. He discusses training for carrier landings on USS Enterprise; the arrival of VMF-211 aboard Enterprise and their delivery to Wake Island; and the attack on Pealr Harbor on 7 December 1941. Kleiss was in a dive bomber and attacked Japanese carriers at the Battle of Midway, where he earned the Navy Cross.

Interview with David Braden, a member of the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He discusses his training in the U.S. to become a navigator; his deployment to Saipan with the 870th Squadron, 497th Bomb Group, 73rd Wing; initial attacks on Tokyo in a B-29 bomber at high altitude (during which the jet stream interfered with the bombing raids); a low-altitude fire-bombing mission over Tokyo in March, 1945; living conditions on base at Saipan; a mission in which the B-29 he was on ditched in the ocean and his subsequent rescue; Victory in Europe (V-E) Day on Saipan; completing 35 missions; and going home.

Interview with Al Flocke, a radio operator during World War II. He discusses his flight training and being the radio operator on a B-24 bomber which did raids on Guam, Turk, Iwo Jima and other islands. He also relates anecdotes about food, rations, and living conditions on the islands.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with George Beeler. Beeler joined the Army in April of 1943. He was assigned to a Military Police battalion with the 45th Infantry Division. In December, he was transferred to Baltimore. He completed Officer Candidate School in the spring of 1944. In December, Beeler completed additional schooling as a marine repair officer. In June of 1945 he deployed to Hickman Field in Hawaii, serving as a shipment officer, in preparation for the invasion of Japan. He continued his service after the war ended, receiving his discharge around July of 1946.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Charles Borchers. Borchers joined the Army in September 1944 and received training at Camp Hood and Fort Ord. His first combat duty was in the Luzon campaign, where he was stationed in the mountains north of Manila. There he was assigned to the 112th Cavalry Regiment. His platoon devised an alarm system out of barbed wire and tin cans to alert them to Japanese infiltration. They fired 15,000 rounds when a water buffalo stumbled into it. After the battle, Borchers was stricken with hepatitis and never was in action again. He arrived in Tokyo Bay on 1 September 1945 and camped at the Tateyama Air Base with a view of the surrender. He was part of the occupation forces and describes what he saw on his travels through Japan, including the rubble of Chiba. He joined the 649th Ordnance Ammunition Company, dumping ammunition, vehicles, and aircraft into the water near Shoshi. Borchers returned home and was discharged in November 1946 as a first sergeant, whereupon he joined the Naval Reserves and entered medical school. He resigned his commission in 1953.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Eleanor Brown. From early 1942 through 1944, Brown served as a general mechanics helper at Kelly Field in San Antonio, Texas, and had completed flight training. In April, she joined the Women’s Air Service Pilots (WASPs) in Sweetwater, Texas. Brown graduated, though WASP was disbanded in December of that same year. She returned to Kelly Field and continued to work as the first woman mechanic at the Air Force Base.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Alfredo Buentello. Buentello joined the Army in September 1940 and received basic training at Fort Sam Houston. He received medical corpsman training for three years before landing on Normandy on 6 June 1944 with the 2nd Medical Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division, supporting the 38th Regiment. He recalls the devastation at Normandy and remembers saving the lives of two men, one of whom was a German soldier. Buentello spent 160 days on the frontlines. He remembers Brest as being particularly bad. He was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. Buentello sustained a concussion and multiple head wounds, one of which was patched with a metal plate. He recovered at the 165th General Hospital and the 44th Evacuation Hospital. He saw men being sent from the hospital to the front lines without having fully recovered. At the end of April, Buentello rejoined his division in Pilsen. He celebrated V-E Day, complete with a parade. He had enough points to return home immediately and was discharged in June 1945.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Joe Canion. Canion joined the Army Air Forces in June of 1942. He received a commission as a second lieutenant and completed pursuit pilot training at Foster Field in Victoria, Texas in May of 1943. He served with the 345th Fighter Squadron, flying P-39s and P-47s. Beginning in the fall of 1943, he flew combat missions during the North African Campaign and the Italian Campaign. He also supported the invasion of southern France, completing around 100 missions. Canion returned to the US in April of 1945, having earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, and was discharged in June.
