Oral History Interview with Arnold Abbott, January 20, 2018

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Arnold Abbott. Abbott was born in 1924. He dropped out of college to join the US Army in 1942. While undergoing basic training at Camp Wheeler, Georgia, Abbott witnessed practiced segregation and consequently became involved in civil rights issues. He recalls that he did not finish basic training, and was sent to Newport News, Virginia where he was assigned to the 34th Infantry Division. He tells of being involved in action in North Africa, and Italy. Abbott returned to the US after the war.

Oral History Interview with Jean Adams, January 25, 2016

The National Museum of the pacific War presents an oral interview with Jean Adams. Adams recalls visiting her brother in the Philippines before the war started. On the way, she visited Japan. She was evacuated back to the US before hostilities started in the Philippines. After the war started, Adams joined the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps and was in the Inspector General’s office in Des Moines. She recalls meeting Eleanor Roosevelt and had some interaction with Oveta Culp Hobby.

Oral History Interview with Elmore Anglley, January 10, 2009

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Elmore Anglley. Anglley was drafted in the Navy in February of 1944. Beginning in June of 1944 he served as a machinist mate aboard USS LST-997. They completed several convoys to Italy. In August of 1944 they landed in Southern France. In July of 1945 they traveled to Guam, Saipan and Okinawa. They landed vehicles, equipment and soldiers for invasions. He provides some details of each of these invasions, their LST in general and their travels across the sea. Anglley was discharged in May of 1946.

Retelling of the story of a witty man

This is a traditional story which involves a descriptive riddle about a witty man who needs to take a lion, a goat and a load of leaves across a river. The caveat is that the man cannot take all three in one go. (Note: the narrator inadvertently refers to the goat as a jackal in the beginning). Finally, no one gets the money and all three end up dead.

This is a retelling of the story about seven brothers and their sister by Muhammad Awaiz (a 32-year old government servant) with Naik Muhammad (a 42-year old male) as the listener. In this story, the brothers get separated from their sister and the latter is searching for them. The sister finds her lost brothers in a forest but the brothers cannot recognise her and each one of them wants to marry her. When the sister lets them know that she was their sister, they drop the idea of marrying her.

Oral History Interview with Russell Barager, January 28, 2009

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Russell Barager. Barager joined the Navy in October of 1944 after spending a year in the Merchant Marine. He was assigned to USS LSM-326 and served in the deck department. Barager mentions delivering supplies to Saipan and the Philippines. He discusses landing Marines in the eleventh wave on Okinawa. Barager describes feeling the impact of a kamikaze landing in the water nearby and firing on another that hit a cruiser. His ship was caught in a major typhoon when it was headed to Japan after the war. He was discharged in June of 1946.

Oral History Interview with Robert Barg, January 30, 2004

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Robert Barg. Barg was born on 20 November 1918 in San Benito, Texas and graduated from high school in 1936. After hearing the Army Air Corps had an excellent school for aircraft maintenance, he joined the Army Air Corps on 20 June 1940 at Chanute Field, Illinois. After completing aircraft maintenance training, he was made an instructor. Barg served as an instructor for several years before he applied for and was accepted to Officer Candidate School at Boca Raton, Florida. He was then sent to Yale University for training as a Maintenance Engineering Officer. Upon completing the course in July 1943, he was commissioned. Barg then reported to the Boeing Aircraft plant in Seattle for additional training. He was then sent to the Pratt, Kansas Air Base where he received more training. The crew then went to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and picked up their B-29 and flew to Chakulia, India where they were assigned to the 20th Air Force, 58th Bomb Wing, 40th Bomb Group, 44th Bomb Squadron. The unit was based there for a year, during which they flew gasoline and other supplies into China as well …
