Oral History Interview with Virgil Cassel, January 30, 2008

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Virgil Cassel. Cassel joined the Navy in July of 1942. From September of 1942 through March of 1946 he served aboard the USS Enterprise (CV-6) as an Apprentice Seaman and Chief Yeoman. Cassel signed up for extended duty and served in Berlin, Germany for two years beginning in March of 1946. He was assigned as the admiral’s secretary in the Office of Military Government for the U.S. Navy. They were disbanding the Germany Navy. Cassel assisted Admiral William Glassford in the analysis of the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials. He provides some details of the trials he attended. He was discharged in November of 1947. He remained active in the Navy Reserves until joining the Air Force ROTC at the University of North Texas. Upon graduating in 1951 he received a commission in the Air Force as a second lieutenant and was called to active duty in the Korean War. Due to his number of hours in duty overseas, he remained at a base in Texas and completed the remainder of his Air Force career as an instructor in leadership in the Strategic Air Command Security School in Camp Carson, …

Oral History Interview with Richard Dykstra, January 30, 2013

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Richard Dykstra. Dykstra joined the Navy in January of 1943, at the age of seventeen. He served as a Radarman aboard USS Lunga Point (CVE-94), and saw combat in the Pacific at Iwo Jima, Okinawa and the Philippines. In August of 1945, their ship conducted minesweeping operations west of Okinawa. Dykstra returned to the US in November of 1945 and was discharged.

Oral History Interview with Robert L. Cook, January 30, 2013

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Robert L Cook. Cook was accepted into the Naval ROTC program at Rice University. Upon his graduation with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in April of 1943, Cook was commissioned into the Navy as an ensign. He became active in major ship repairs, and assigned to Mare Island, California, Pearl Harbor and Guam. In 1944, Cook helped outfit USS Baltimore (CA-68) to accommodate President Franklin Roosevelt in his travels to Pearl Harbor and Alaska. He was discharged in June of 1946.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Donald Green. Green joined the Navy in December of 1944. Beginning March of 1945, he served as a Fireman aboard the USS Nashville (CL-43). They provided support for the landings at Brunei Bay, Borneo. In September they traveled to the Philippines, where they were stationed when the war ended. They transported troops back to the US, where Green was discharged in July of 1946.

Oral History Interview with Charles Maurice Penick, January 30, 2015

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Charles Maurice Penick. Penick joined the Navy in 1943. He completed Radio Operator and Submarine Schools by mid-1945. He was stationed at a submarine base on Mare Island in California, and had not yet been assigned to a submarine when the first atomic bomb was dropped on August 6. Penick assisted in decommissioning the USS Hammerhead (SS-364). He worked in the ship’s company on the base through his discharge in June of 1946.

Oral History Interview with William Crawford, January 30, 2016

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with William Crawford. Crawford’s daughter Pam Dell assists with the interview. Crawford joined the Army in 1937. He completed basic training in California and Hawaii. In Hawaii he spent his first year at Schofield Barracks with the 35th Infantry Division. His first enlistment was up in 1940 and then he re-enlisted in Hawaii and went into the Coast Artillery in Honolulu at Fort DeRussy. After December 7, 1941 Crawford was a sergeant and went to Hickam Field to assess damage of the ships, airplanes and hangars. He and his daughter give a description of what he witnessed after the bombing. He later assisted with manning the telephones, intercepting radio messages from the Japanese. He then moved to the Field Artillery working in the motor pool. He was discharged in 1945 while in Hawaii, and remained there to open and operate a business. He went on to open a WWII Veteran’s Club in South Carolina for 40 years and after that he was the national commander of the American Veterans of WWII.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Charles Elias. Elias joined the Navy in 1943. He completed hospital corpsman school, trained in treating traumatic injuries. He transferred over to the Marine Corps and served as a medical corpsman. In the summer of 1944 he was sent to Guam to join the 21st Regiment of the 3rd Marine Division. He describes his experiences there, including patrolling the island and combat with the Japanese. In February of 1945 they traveled to Iwo Jima, where he describes their work on the island and getting shot. He was discharged in the winter of 1945.

Oral History Interview with Wilbert Shanks, January 30, 2009

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Wilbert Shanks. Shanks joined the Navy in December of 1940. He completed communication school, and became a signalman, operating Morse Code and semaphore flags. He served aboard the USS Helena (CL-50). His battle station was at emergency radio, providing communication within the ship. They were stationed at Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, and Shanks describes his experiences before, during and after the attack, including the ship getting hit with a torpedo. After repairs were made to the Helena, they traveled to the Coral Sea where they assisted survivors of the sunken USS Wasp (CV-7). They participated in the Guadalcanal Campaign. In July of 1943 they provided artillery for the Marines at Kula Gulf, where the Helena was sunk. In February of 1944 Shanks was assigned to the USS Major (DE-796), running escort duty between Norfolk and Trinidad. He was in Tokyo Bay during the surrender in September of 1945 and was discharged in December of 1946.

Oral History Interview with John Dragoni, January 30, 2007

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with John Dragoni. Dragoni joined the Army Aviation Cadet Training Program in August of 1943. He completed cadet training and gunnery school, though served as a Radar Navigator aboard a B-29. Beginning in December of 1944 he completed missions to Singapore out of a base in India. During one mission, their plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire over Singapore and they crash landed on Burma. They were later stationed on Guam, completing missions to Iwo Jima and Japan. He was discharged in November of 1945.

Oral History Interview with Robert Barg, January 30, 2004

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Robert Barg. Barg was born on 20 November 1918 in San Benito, Texas and graduated from high school in 1936. After hearing the Army Air Corps had an excellent school for aircraft maintenance, he joined the Army Air Corps on 20 June 1940 at Chanute Field, Illinois. After completing aircraft maintenance training, he was made an instructor. Barg served as an instructor for several years before he applied for and was accepted to Officer Candidate School at Boca Raton, Florida. He was then sent to Yale University for training as a Maintenance Engineering Officer. Upon completing the course in July 1943, he was commissioned. Barg then reported to the Boeing Aircraft plant in Seattle for additional training. He was then sent to the Pratt, Kansas Air Base where he received more training. The crew then went to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and picked up their B-29 and flew to Chakulia, India where they were assigned to the 20th Air Force, 58th Bomb Wing, 40th Bomb Group, 44th Bomb Squadron. The unit was based there for a year, during which they flew gasoline and other supplies into China as well …

Oral History Interview with Joe Parker, January 30, 2003

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Joe Parker. Parker joined the Marine Corps on 8 December 1941. He traveled to New Zealand, practicing jungle warfare training. He participated in the Guadalcanal Campaign, was shot three times by October of 1942, and received three Purple Hearts. He was hospitalized on the island of Efate, where he personally met Eleanor Roosevelt. He ultimately returned to the US aboard the USS Mercy (AH-8). He never returned to combat due to his injuries, and was discharged in late 1945.
