Oral History Interview with Bernice Loewe, January 29, 2008

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Bernice Loewe. Loewe was an aircraft fabric and leather worker at Scott Air Force Base between 1943 and 1953. She replaced fabric on ailerons from B-17s and B-24s. Other of her duties included repairing flight jackets, boots, and bags, and fitting helmets with cups to house receivers for the radiomen. Just before D-Day, she went out to the air strip to make a repair onsite. There she was met with a long row of idling B-17s, their crews melancholic; later that evening, the planes all departed.

Oral History Interview with Henry Tackett, January 29, 2013

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Henry Tackett. An avid radio hobbyist and proficient in Morse code as a teenager, Tackett joined the US Naval Communications Reserve in 1938. After the war began, he was called to active duty, and served as a Chief Petty Officer Radioman. He worked at two air stations in Pensacola, Florida, maintaining radio equipment on planes. Around mid-1942, Tackett completed Submarine Chaser Training and was assigned to the PC-600. In early 1943, he was assigned to the USS Heermann (DD-532). Tackett was involved in many of the major sea operations of WWII, including the Battle off Samar at Leyte Gulf, the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, the Philippines Campaign, the raids and bombardments of Eniwetok, the landing on Emirau, and the battles of Tarawa, Solomon Islands, Kwajalein, and Palau Islands. Tackett returned to the US and received his discharge in October 1945.

After training, he was assigned to USS Rutland (APA-192). He recalls a few anecdotes about being aboard ship, seeing part of Japan and hauling troops home after the war. Smith shares some of his Christian testimony and entered the seminary after returning to college after the war.

He shares several anecdotes about his experiences aboard the ship. He discusses the Battle of Santa Crus Islands and night action of Guadalcanal.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Don Sumner. Born in 1927, he was inducted into the Navy in June 1945. As an apprentice seaman, he was trained in the Aviation Midshipman Program. He was in training when the war ended. He received his wings in 1948 and was assigned to fly PB4Y airplanes in a Bat guided bomb squadron. With the outbreak of the Korean War, he was sent to North Africa. He retired from the Navy after twenty-five years of service.

Such songs are of great significance to the community; however, until recently, their popularity and importance have started dwindling because of the penetration of urban culture into rural society.

This is a performance of a traditional song by the title ‘Dulahē kī ammā’ (Eng. O the mother of the bridegroom). In this song, the bridegroom’s mother is asked to bless her son on this auspicious marriage occasion. Such folksongs are of great significance to the community; however, until recently, their popularity and importance have started dwindling because of the penetration of urban culture into rural society. This folksong is in the Eastern dialect of Urdu.

This is a monologue by Khurshaid Bibi (a 50-year old female) about a woman who lives with her two daughters. One day two men come to the said woman's home at night and try to kidnap her. She kills the kidnappers and gets a prize the next day.

Interview about health practices

This is an interview about traditional health practices in the Lai community. The interviewee, born in 1975, is originally from Falam and speaks Hakha and Kawl. Interviews were collected as part of the Linguistically Underserved Communities and Health (LUCAH) project, which aims to make health information more accessible and culturally relevant for the Chin refugee community in order to ensure that they are getting clear and accurate information.
