Oral History Interview with Thomas Wetherel, December 28, 2011

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Thomas Wetherel. Wehterel joined the Army Air Forces in July 1942 and served as a ground crewman in the 312th Bomb Group. He went overseas with them to New Guinea and fought at Buna. He stayed with the 312th BG for the duration of the war, going to the Philippines and Okinawa. His job was driving the fuel truck and moving airplanes. Wetherel shares anecdotes about his experiences on the various islands during the invasions. He was discharged in December, 1945.

Oral History Interview with Orville Brauss, December 28, 2016

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Orville Brauss. Brauss joined the Marine Corps in 1942, and was called for active duty in 1944. He completed officer training and joined the First Marine Division in Pavuvu, Solomon Islands. He participated in a combat training landing on Guadalcanal in January of 1945 and the Battle of Okinawa in April. After the war ended, Brauss served with the occupation troops in China, guarding supply trains, bridges and depots to keep food and coal moving into the cities. He returned to the US and received his discharge in early 1946.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Robert Phillips. Phillips joined the Army Air Forces in December of 1942. He served as a B-24 pilot, and shares details of his flight training. Beginning December of 1944, Phillips and his crew flew over the Gulf of Mexico, identifying potential enemy U-boats. He later transferred to Hondo, Texas to train B-29 engineers, where he was stationed when the war ended. Phillips received his discharge in late 1945.

Oral History Interview with Albert Jeffers, December 28, 2011

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Albert Jeffers. Jeffers joined the Navy in 1943 and received basic training in Illinois. He received diesel engine maintenance and repair training at submarine school in Connecticut. Upon completion, he was assigned to the engine room aboard the USS Threadfin (SS-410) as a fireman, first class. He participated in the tracking operation that led to the sinking of the Japanese battleship Yamato. He was transferred to the USS Menhaden (SS-377) and was the first to welcome Admiral Nimitz during a change of command ceremony. Jeffers was discharged in 1946 and went on to earn a degree in mechanical engineering as well as a law degree.

Oral History Interview with Robert B. Walker, December 28, 2010

Transcript of an oral interview with Robert B. Walker. Born in 1920, he was drafted in November, 1943. He completed pilot training at the Tuskegee Army Air Field, Alabama in 1945. He flew B-25 airplanes. He arrived in England as the war in Europe ended. He was there for a month and did not see combat. He was discharged in March, 1946. He used the GI Bill to obtain his Doctor of Education (Ed.D.). He mentions the 1943 Detroit race riot and shares an anecdote about race relations at Tuskegee. The interview also contains information about his family during the Great Depression.

Oral History Interview with Eve Tice, December 28, 2005

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Eve Tice. Tice was born 7 August 1923 in Calumet, Michigan. Graduating from high school in 1942, she went to work as a timekeeper at a Chevrolet Motor Company plant in Detroit, Michigan. She describes her duties. She met her future husband, who joined the Navy, and they were married when he came home on leave following boot camp. Her husband was assigned to the USS Franklin (CV13) at Newport, Rhode Island. She tells of seeing her husband when he came home on leave after the Franklin went to Bremerton, Washington for repairs November 1944. She and her husband took the train to Bremerton where they rented one room in a private home. She stayed there until the Franklin departed. She comments on censoring and V-mail letters. On 19 March 1945 she was notified that the USS Franklin had been damaged, her husband was a survivor and that the ship would be returning to the Brooklyn Navy Yard for repairs. The ship arrived April 1945 and Mr. and Mrs. Tice remained in the area until he was discharged November 1945.

Oral History Interview with Robert Scripps, December 28, 2002

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Robert Scripps. Scripps joined the California Army National Guard in March of 1940. He deployed to Pearl Harbor shortly after the attack, and remained on the island throughout 1942. They enforced the blackout curfew, built fencing around certain areas of the Harbor, dug an underground communications center and served on guard duty. In early 1943, Scripps was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division. They transported troops to the Panama and Fiji. He was assigned to Guadalcanal to relieve the Marines and participated in combat with remaining Japanese. They continued traveling through New Zealand, New Caledonia and arrived in the Philippines in early 1945, participating in the invasion of Luzon. They reduced the Japanese resistance on the island until late June. The division then served in the Occupation of Japan after the surrender. He returned to the U.S. and was discharged in late 1945.
