The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Joe E. Hunter: He joined the Navy in May, 1944 with basic training at Camp Wallace, Texas. He spoke of being chosen for the CINPAC (Commander-in-Chief Pacific Command) Boat Crew by Commander Hal Lamar, Admiral Nimitz's Flag Officer, and becoming the stern hook on Admiral Nimitz's barge. He took Admiral Bull Halsey out fishing once and another time picked up an unnamed vice-admiral off of a submarine. He told about interacting with the Seabees. He reunited with his shipmates in the recent past and marvels at how well everyone turned out.

Oral History Interview with Calvin Patterson, October 10, 2003

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Calvin Patterson. Patterson joined the Navy in 1943. He completed Radar School and Fire Fighter School and was assigned to serve as an instructor aboard a radar training ship, USS Moosehead (IX-98). They traveled up and down the Mexican coast, taking recent radar school graduates for experiential learning aboard the ship. Patterson was later assigned to a Coast Guard radio station in California. In February of 1944, he was transferred to USS Hector (AR-7), a fleet repair ship, where he organized and oversaw the combat information center. They traveled to Hawaii, Eniwetok, the Philippines and Ulithi where their largest repair job took place on USS Houston (CL-81). They aided many other ships in preparation for battle and in preparation to return to the US. Patterson returned home and was discharged in March of 1946.

Oral History Interview with Louis Avant, October 10, 2003

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Louis Avant. Avant was 16 when the war began and joined the Navy a few years later. He was trained as an electrician, but ended up working as a machinist mate for the boat pool that served CINPAC at Hawaii and then Guam. Avant mentions boxing in several smoker events. He was a member of the boat crew that took Admiral Nimitz to the surrender ceremony.

Beginning in 1944, he served as Signalman Third-Class aboard the USS Drew (APA-162). They transported cargo and troops to and from combat areas traveling to Guam, Ulithi, Leyte and Okinawa.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Floy Hughes. Hughes joined the Navy in early 1941. From 1941 through early 1944, he served as a First Class Cook in the Officers Mess at Corpus Christi, Texas. Beginning April of 1944, Hughes did the same work at Camp Kearny in San Diego, California. He returned to Texas and was discharged in September of 1945.

Oral History Interview with George Terrell, October 10, 2002

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with George Terrell. Terrell joined the Marine Corps in April of 1946. Beginning in June, he was assigned to occupation duty in Northern China. He comments on how some of the Japanese still occupying mountain regions in China were unaware that the war had ended. Terrell served with the 1st Marine Division, and their job was to guard the Kunming railroad. He was discharged in December of 1947. Terrell reenlisted in September of 1950, participating in the Korean War through September of 1953.

Oral History Interview with Sam Moody, October 10, 1996

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Sam Moody. Moody joined the Air Corps in 1940 to become an aircraft mechanic. He arrived in the Philippines in November, 1941 and when the war broke out, he went to the front at Bataan. After the surrender, he walked out of Bataan and spent 10 days on the Death March. He was moved from Camp O'Donnell to Cabanatuan. From there, he was sent to Manila to a camp near Clark Field. Moody stayed on a work detail in Manila for a while. In June, 1944, he was shipped to Japan to work in a factory. When the war ended, Moody returned to Boston only to be transported back to Japan to testify at the war crime trials.

Oral History Interview with Michael Pohorilla, October 10, 2012

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Michael Pohorilla. Pohorilla enlisted in the aviation cadet program for the Army Air Force in December of 1942. He provides great detail of his training. In the fall of 1943 to the spring of 1944 he trained in aerial gunnery and shares his experiences in school. In June of 1944 he landed in Liverpool, England. He was assigned to the 385th Bomb Group, 550th Bomb Squadron in the 8th Air Force. He served as a navigator aboard a B-17 and describes each of his crew members. He details a number of his missions, which were all in the industrial centers of Germany. He provides some information on their targets, which included Germany’s manufacturing and transportation complexes. They flew 35 missions overall. He talks some on life in England, where they were still subjected to the V-1 and V-2 bombs overhead. He returned to the States in April of 1945, where he taught special courses at Brooks Field. He was discharged in October of 1945.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Walter Neumann. Neumann joined the Navy in April, 1944 and trained at Great Lakes. He attended radio school before reporting aboard YMS-231. They were just getting underway in the Pacific when the war ended. They shaped course for Japan to work minesweeping duties during the occupation. He was discharged I n1947 but stayed in the active reserves.

Oral History Interview with Milford Lee, October 10, 2014

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Milford Lee. After high school, Lee performed in a traveling big band. Once the war started, he became a draftsman at Boeing and took the aviation cadet exam. In January 1943 he began flight training, earning his wings that fall. He served as a P-38 fighter escort and group leader over Ploiesti. He details the protocol for conducting large raids, from briefing to debriefing, describing intense antiaircraft fire over the target. In Southern France, his plane was experimentally modified to carry 3,000 pounds' worth of bombs. In the fall of 1944, Lee was recruited for an Army big band that traveled to remote bases and emergency landing strips. While performing in the Balkans, he was captivated by a Partisan commander, later revealed to be Tito. After 56 missions, Lee was rotated to the States and in November 1945 was discharged. He went on to earn a doctorate in nuclear physics and joined a small research team that revolutionized fiber-optic communication.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Charles Meacham. Meacham was born in Roanoke County, California in 1925. At the age of 17, he dropped out of high school and joined the Marine Corps. Upon completion of boot camp, he volunteered for the Marine Raiders. In 1943, Meacham was assigned to Company K, 3rd Marine Raider Battalion. He tells of serving in combat on Bougainville, Guam and Okinawa and the use of Navajo Code Talkers and war dogs during various operations. He suffered a debilitating injury that led to a lengthy hospitalization and a medical discharge in November 1945.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Albert Jenkins. Jenkins joined the Army in early 1942 and was mistakenly sent to Australia before he completed basic training. Once there, he was attached to the 35th Fighter Group as an armorer. Jenkins shares several anecdotes about his time in the service in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines. Jenkins returned to the US and became an instructor before the war ended. He was discharged in January 1945.

Oral History Interview with Donald Good, October 10, 2005

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Donald Good. Good was born 30 July 1918 in Aurora, Indiana and graduated from high school in 1937. In 1941 he joined the US Army and received his basic training at Camp Shelby, Mississippi. He was then sent to Camp Polk, Louisiana for twelve weeks of maneuvers. He then went to Camp Kilmer, New Jersey to board RMS Queen Mary and landed in Scotland. Good recalls being in Liege, Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge and describes the weather conditions they endured. He remembers his unit working with the 3rd Moroccan Division, assigned to the American 3rd Army, and describes their living habits and method of combat.

Oral History Interview with Glenn McDole, October 10, 1996

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Glen McDole. McDole was born in Orleans, Nebraska 6 February 1921 and after graduating from high school, enlisted in the Marine Corps in the fall of 1940. Following basic training, he went to Cavite Navy Yard where he performed security guard duties as a member of the 1st Separate Marine Battalion. The battalion was moved to Corregidor Island after the Japanese began attacking the Philippines. There, he was in close contact with General MacArthur. He witnessed MacArthur’s evacuation with General Wainwright assuming command. McDole describes his close proximity to Wainwright and the eventual surrender of Corregidor. He describes his ordeal as a prisoner of war over the next few years, including building a large, concrete Japanese runway in the village of Puerto Princesa on the Philippine island of Palawan. During this time he endured an emergency appendectomy with no anesthesia and no infection-fighting drugs. He also describes the events of 14 December 1944 when the Japanese killed 139 of the 150 remaining prisoners on Palawan, by burning many of them alive. He managed to escape and find refuge among friendly villagers, and eventually was evacuated from the Philippines …
