Knowledge Management in the Technical Information Center/Library of a Navy Lab and as a Whole, as well as Metrics to Measure the Scientific Health of a R&D Center

In order to perform research data triangulation, there were three main sources of data: 1. External/Internal Survey of 15 Library Directors (5 in the Navy; 10 from Government/Universities), 2. Literature Review/Industry Best Practices, and 3. Navy Lab Interviews (Ten) . The results include "Harvest” the personal collections of classified and other materials (reach out to the end users to put documents in library repository); Need to modernize our workflow; Having research material that can be easily accessed for desktops; Need to share information and knowledge; Focus on the needs of your community and evolve with those needs.

Mitigating Usability Issues in Legacy EHR Systems to Improve Patient Safety: A Learning Health System Approach

This paper describes an on-going research project examining currently used processes in both hospitals and EHR vendor companies for identifying, prioritizing, and mitigating electronic health record (EHR) software issues, and usability issues, that may compromise patient safety as they arise in the implemented or legacy EHR system. This on-going project includes 3 interviews with CMIOs at hospitals and 3 interviews with EHR vendors. Next steps include surveying both groups. The project can be considered as part of a learning health system (LHS) approach in that it seeks to identify best practices in terms of the process for addressing these EHR issues. The LHS approach seeks to improve long term outcomes in health care by identifying optimal delivery processes and to do so in a systematic, rather than a haphazard way. (Friedman & Rigby, 2013).

Using Query Expansion to Improve Findability of Resources Addressing Multiple Chronic Conditions

With advances in natural language processing (NLP), machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI), there are new opportunities for improving findability among existing public-facing resources. This project seeks to inform findability, especially for multiple chronic condition (MCC) resources, by describing current search capabilities and limitations across several of AHRQ’s publicly available domains and by identifying and piloting a novel NLP/ML approach to make suggested improvements. This work intentionally engages with the overlap of numerous disciplines including information extraction, information retrieval, data and text mining, knowledge management, and best practices in health care. We are looking to apply this work across all domains but will start by focusing on specific AHRQ domains. Given limited API access, we scraped the content of digital.ahrq.gov and the patient centered medical home (PCMH) resources and performed automated search using a set of related terms that align with an MCC scenario: hypertension, osteoarthritis, and chronic kidney disease. We obtained results confirming the limitations of existing search.

The UNT Butterfly Flower Patch Commemorative Poster

This is a commemorative poster designed for the establishment of the UNT Butterfly Flower Patch on March 25th, 2023. This new butterfly garden, supported by the We Mean Green Fund, is the latest garden in the pollinative patches, a series of pollinator gardens around Library Mall. Initially proposed in the Spring of 2022, CLASS undergraduate student Logan Dovalina established the UNT Butterfly Flower Patch using initial funds from UNT Bee Campus Committee to establish a butterfly garden located adjacent to Willis Library. With a We Mean Green Fund proposal, he secured funding for fully establishing the garden this year as well as every academic semester until Fall 2027. Ultimately, this butterfly garden serves as part of the greater UNT Pollinative Patches, which are pollinator-dedicated spaces located throughout campus.

Elicitation of Tacit Knowledge Inside a Clinical Process Using the FRAM

The 17th International Conference on Knowledge Management was held in the historic city of Potsdam, Germany. Since the conference was among the first post-pandemic face to face conferences, the overall theme of the 17th edition of the ICKM conference rightly focused on “Knowledge, Uncertainty and Risks: From individual to global scale” at different levels of analysis and agency. This poster highlights the qualitative study which was conducted in a major regional hospital in Germany, using the FRAM to analyze the recurrent and complex process of surgical care preparation in the morning. The aim was to offer the hospital a detailed qualitative analysis to promote resilience and maintain a safe state of operating during this process. The FRAM illustrated relevant system functions and unveiled sources as well as effects or variabilities that are now in the process of being evaluated according to appropriate goals and values. In this way, the FRAM illuminates hidden but relevant knowledge, so to speak tacit knowledge, within a complex sociotechnical system that is difficult or impossible to identify otherwise.

Level of Adoption and Use of KM Practices in Supply Chains of Manufacturing Companies

Business competition increasingly involves entire supply chains (SCs) rather than individual firms. Thus, knowledge, which is a strategic resource for companies, needs to be managed properly not only in single firms, but also at inter-firm level and in SCs, so that companies can coordinate and co-manage resources, activities, and innovative efforts in collaboration with their partners for improved competitiveness. To this end, knowledge management (KM) practices and their adoption for the effective management of SC inter-firm relationships can be of great help, but the current studies on this aspect are very fragmented, and there is still insufficient knowledge of what practices are adopted to manage knowledge in inter-firm relationships and how intensely these are used. This study contributes to filling this gap by measuring the adoption and intensity of KM practices and comparing their use at the intra- and inter-firm level. A survey of a sample of European large and medium-sized manufacturing firms was used. A descriptive statistical analysis and a correlation analysis were performed on the collected data. The study confirms that KM practices are less used at the inter-firm level. Also, a relative higher variation is depicted among firms in the use of the proposed practices at inter-firm …
