She has one leg crossed under the other and her left arm resting on the chair back to her side. She wears a light color kneed length dress with a large white lace collar, a wide black sash across her body, and horizontally stripped tights and boots. A plant is partially visible behind her. A white piece of paper with handwritten inscription is taped to the back of the photograph. The inscription reads, "Daughter J. W. Emery / Annie Belle Emery / (Mrs. J. W. Bright)."

Photograph of Sarah L. Slaughter Rankin (Mrs. John M. Rankin) (1818-1886). The portrait shows the sitter in a three-quarter pose from head to waist, and it is mounted on a carte de visite. Her hair is parted and pulled back behind her ears. She is wearing a dark dress with buttons up the front and a lace collar pinned at her neck. The photographer's imprint on the back of the card is: "J. H. Webster, Photograph Galleries, Marshall and Jefferson, Texas." Mrs. Rankin was a teacher in the private school run by her husband in San Augustine, Texas, in 1837 and 1838.
