Irrigation Through Siphon Tubes

Photograph of irrigation water being let out of supply ditch onto land through siphon tubes. Water is flowing west toward floodwater detention dam where the water supply is being stored. The 35 irrigation system was designed by Grant Woodward, SCS engineer, Altus, and engineering services were performed by Cordell work unit.

Mulching Detention Dam

Mulching Detention Dam

Photograph of 2.5 tons of native prairie hay is being cut in on the front slope. Site No. 14, Cavalry Creek, 2 miles west and 5 miles south of Cordell, Okla. The cutter being used here is an EMCO type cutter with 10 inch spacing. The grass is placed into the ground approximately 3 inches.

Excellent Crop of Kafir Corn

Photograph of an excellent crop of Kafir corn on contour in former 5 acre area of severely gullied natural draw where owner had never made a crop. An erosion control dam was constructed across the deaw in 1937 and in two years the land was producing crops. To date the draw has silted in approximately 5 feet says Mr. Lucas.

This is an area of sand soils often lacking uniformity to permeable depth. The uneven windbreak at the lower left particularly illustrates this variation in depth. The taller thriftier trees are growing in six feed of permeable soil while the shorter less vigorous stands are on soils as shallow as two feet. Note effective furrow and windbreak in center, right."
