Smith of Upson and Talbot Counties, Georgia. He came to Texas in 1886 after graduating with honors from the Louisville Medical College. He married Nellie Welch in 1887. For a time, he was associated in the drug business with Dr. James G. Adams. Over the years, he and his family lived in Branchville, Millican, and Hearne, Texas.
