Beyond (Electronic Symphony No. 1)

Recording of Otto Laske's Beyond (Electronic Symphony No. 1). This composition is based on a large-scale symphonic design that includes three movements. It was composed as a "virtual choreography" that suggests concrete, physical choreography as its optimal medium of presentation. Compositionally, the piece is based on the use of algorithmic score synthesis as well as a feedback loop between a score generator and a sound synthesis language.

Recording of Hanns Holger Rutz's Bridge. This work was composed for the Singing-Bridges project by an Australian sound artist in which she made various field recordings of the sound of bridges from all over the world. The composer describes this piece as the listener travelling "inside" a bridge. The form is simply a contraction and re-expansion.

Recording of Minsoo Cho's Smoky Mountains. This work is part of a collection titled "Wavefields" which includes compositions by graduate composers at the Experimental Music Studios of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The title of this piece was derived from a postcard picture of the Smoky Mountains and the music was also inspired by this imagery. Recording of Lennart Westman's Vigsel. This piece is the second movement of home land trilogy. This work includes four voices from the Swedish Radio choir and electronically processed sounds of a violin, a cello, and sounds of nature. The lyrics of this piece are from a poem by Lennart Westman himself and reflects the journey back to his earth. The title of this piece alludes to the reunion with the forests and waters of Westman's own childhood.

Recording of Pete Stollery's Vox Magna. The sound materials for this work came from recordings of machines used in the steel making process. These recordings had been used previously for a sound design and the composer reused them to create a more musical piece on his own where it could be listened to in a more intimate performance space. He thanks Peter Key for the original recordings. This piece premiered at the Musée d'Art Contemporaine, Montréal, in March 2003.

Recording of Neil Rolnick's Gate Beats. This work consists of sound samples taken from the song "No War Blues" by the composers improvisational band, Fish Love That. These samples were put together to create a new piece that presents a variety of changing and morphing meters and patterns. During live performances, the composer will slowly lower a noise gate on each sample to create new patterns.

The Garnedd Big Band Alien Train Attack

Recording of Stelios Giannoulakis' The Garnedd Big Band Alien Train Attack. This piece was made with sound materials recorded during workshops with pupils from Ysgol y Garnedd in Bangor, Wales. In the two sessions, children played with their voices, instruments, and effects letting the recording equipment create a rich collection of sound objects. These sounds were lightly processed and were edited together to celebrate the joy of playing with sound and its amazing potential. It was commissioned by BNMF in collaboration with The SonicArtsNetwork.
