The task of providing military defense for the Texas Frontier was never an easy one because the territory was claimed by some of the greatest querrilla fighters of all times—the Comanches, Kiowas, Apaches, and Lipans. Protecting a line running from the Red River southwest to El Paso was an impossible task, but following the Mexican War the federal government attempted to do so by establishing a line of forts. During the Civil War the forts were virtually abandoned and the Indians once again ruled the area. Following the war when the military began to restore the old forts, they found that the Indians no longer fought with bows and arrows but shouldered the latest firearms. With their new weapons the Indians were able to inflict tremendous destruction, bringing demands from settlers for more protection. In the summer of 1866 a new line of forts appeared through central Texas under the leadership of General Philip H. Sheridan, commander of federal forces in Louisiana and Texas. On August 1, 1966, Charles Joseph Whitman ascended the University of Texas Tower and committed what was then the largest simultaneous mass murder in American history. He gunned down forty-five people inside and around the Tower before he was killed by two Austin police officers. During the previous evening he had killed his wife and mother, bringing the total to sixteen people dead and at least thirty-one wounded. Interview with Darrell Harrington, an anesthetist and Army veteran of the Vietnam War. In the interview, Harrington describes his experiences while serving as an Army nurse, and includes details on his assignments to Chu Lai, Da Nang, and the 91st Evacuation Hospital in An Khe. Harrington also discusses the treatment of wounded troops and enemy soldiers, relationships between doctors and nurses, general morale problems, and recreational activities. He recalls his return to the States on thirty-day leave as well as post-Vietnam adjustments and his attitudes toward the war.

Interview with Jose Gonzalez, an anesthetist and Army veteran of the Vietnam War. In the interview, Gonzalez describes his experiences while serving as an Army nurse in Vietnam. Gonzalez discusses what life was like during his assignment to the 24th Evacuation Hospital, and includes details concerning relationships between doctors and nurses, morale, American relations with Vietnamese civilians, recreational activities, entertainment, and his Bronze Star award. He also recalls the adjustments that both he and many of his comrades dealt with post-Vietnam, and shares his attitudes toward the war.

Interview with William Dunphy, an anesthetist and Army veteran from the Vietnam War. In the interview, Dunphy describes some of his experiences while serving as an Army nurse during the Vietnam War. Dunphy discusses what it was like working at the Army hospital in Saigon, Vietnam, and includes details that concern general living accommodations, hospital facilities, relationships between doctors and nurses, work schedules, alcohol abuse by military personnel, drug problems, and American relations with Vietnamese civilians. He also recalls post-war adjustments and a rest and recuperation trip to Hawaii.

Interview with Carl Horton, an operating room nurse and Vietnam Army veteran. In the interview, Horton describes his experiences while serving as an Army nurse during the Vietnam War. He goes in depth about his assignments, which include Yokohama, Japan and Dong Tam and Can Tho with the 3rd Surgical Hospital. Horton also discusses living accommodations, hospital facilities, American relations with the South Vietnamese military personnel and civilians, "short time" and out-processing, leisure time, and recreational activities. He also discusses the adjustments that he had to make after the war was over and his continuing work with the Veterans Administration.

Interview with Kenneth Poff, a Army WWII veteran from Wrightsville, Pennsylvania, who served with the 1913th Engineer Aviation Battalion. Poff discusses his early life, being drafted and training, shipping out to Townsville, Australia, and landing on New Guinea, fighting attached to the 1st Marine Division for the Cape Gloucester and Hollandia campaigns, constructing and maintaining an airstrip, the Lingayan Gulf campaign in the Philippines, the atomic bomb and VJ-Day, and returning home.

Interview with Navy veteran Richard Donley. The interview includes Donley's personal experiences about the Mediterranean Theater during World War II, boot camp, Fleet Torpedo School, encounters with German "F-lighter" armed barges and E-boats, various assignments, and combat against enemy destroyers. Donley also talks about screening operations for the invasions of Sicily and Salerno, operations along the coasts of northern Italy and southern France and the interdiction of German barge traffic, torpedo problems, commando and intelligence operations, returning to the States, his reassignment to the Motor Torpedo Boats Training Center, and transferring to Samar, Philippines.

Webb discusses the fall of Java and his capture, Bicycle Camp in Batavia (1942), Changi Prison Camp in Singapore (1942), building the Burma-Thailand Death Railway (1942-1944), Kanchanaburi, Thailand (1944-1945), and his liberation. The Appendix includes a photocopy of a photograph of Wade Webb and other prisoner-of-war survivors in Calcutta, India shortly after their release [1 p.] and an addendum to Mr. Webb's oral history interview [1 p.].

Recording of Rachel MacInturff's Origami Animae. This work was created during a beginning level class in Electroacoustic Media. The students were given pieces of paper and began creating various sounds that came together to make this piece which was diffused in a concert format. The composer gives her thanks to the class and makes a note that she was glad to have recorded the laughing of the students at the end.

Recording of Joshua Fried's Welcome to the Ice Box. The commission asked for a "sound scan of the 20th century." This work abstracts, interrogates and re-contextualizes selected sound bites that are historical and may arouse intense associations, and attempts to uncover great sonic and tonal beauty in them. This work uses samples and differing sound patterns to convey a modern soundscape.

Recording of Milos Betko's Personal relations. This piece is segmented into 9 parts by the composer: 1. just before, 2. micado of mammoths, 3. speech of birds, 4. celestial threats, 5. song 1, 6. up and down, 7. song 2: "How many times it sings...", 8. emotions, 9. trio. It's comprised of background noise, violin, voices of the composer's friends, etc. The piece seems to be a collection of sounds that the composer relates to his personal life and day to day.

Recording of Larry Austin's Djuro's Tree. Octophonic computer music. Djuro's Tree is centered around a family portrait of three generations. The story is set in a dynamically moving octophonic "family" tree of sound. The sounds of the tree's limbs creaking and rustling were taken from the BBC Sound Effects Library. The creaking limbs are a recording of a squeaking wooden chair. Software and hardware systems used in Birmingham included Sound Designer, SoundHack, Audiosculpt, Csound, and GRM Tools, on a Macintosh computer.

Interview with Robert H. "Hal" Jackson regarding his experiences as a Navy fighter pilot in the Pacific Theater during the Second World War. It details his experiences with different aircraft and on carriers and in land-based squadrons in the Pacific.

Transcript of an interview with Louise Pearsall Canby, a Navy veteran from Elgin, Illinois, concerning her experiences as a member of the WAVES during World War II. Canby discusses her personal background, her decision to join the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES), and her experiences as a code breaker working with Enigma and German submarine codes.
