Walking Bells

Recording of David Porter's Walking Bells for tape. The piece is a tour through an environmental/concrete landscape. It is another variation on the "cumulative form." This is the second in a series of four tape pieces. As with all these pieces, this piece comments on political and compositional methods and devices. In this instance, the piece makes reference to another composer whose style is borrowed. Other than that, it is pure experience. This piece should be listened to with speakers placed well apart and volume up the the highest comfortable level at the last two minutes of the piece.

Rapid eye movement

Recording of Roger Doyle's Rapid eye movement. The title refers to the type of sleep called "Rapid Eye Movement" or REM, which is dream sleep. During REM sleep, the muscles of the eyes move as though the dreamer were watching something. Structurally, the work is conceived in the same way as Déjà vu occurs in life. There are 30 or 40 instances of mysterious familiarities of the same sounds placed in totally different contexts. Like the human cell, any extract from the composition will reveal the main elements comprising it - the part reflects the whole.

The waste land

Recording of Elżbieta Sikora's The waste land, for fixed media. The piece is a journey through time and spaces. The present is mixed with the past, the ordinary with the extraordinary, dream with reality. The work was commissioned by the Experimental Studio of Polish Radio and was realized in October 1979. The text comes from T. Elliot's poem "The Waste Land."

He met her in the park

Recording of Charles Dodge's "He met her in the park," poetry by Richard Kostelanetz. The poem consists of a boy-meets-girl story that is told eight times, and the retellings abridged versions of the previous ones, sometimes reversing the gender roles until the final retelling is just "He met her in the park." In the composition, the lines are read by a male and female actor alternating lines and each telling of the story is articulated in a different way. The voices are synthesized with melodies, and over the piece, the voices become understood more like music which echoes the original language.

Recording of Francis Dhomont's "Sous le regard d'un soleil noir" )"Under the Glare of a Black Sun") performed by the speakers Pierre Louet, Marthe Forget, and Arthur Bergeron. This is the original recording of the piece that was created in 1982. The text is primarily by Ronald D. Laing and the piece also features quotes by Plato, Franz Kafka, and K. Georg Buchner. The eight sections of the work were inspired by reading the work of the psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Ronald D Laing. The eight sections of the piece are as follows: 1. Pareil a un voyageur perdu (Like a Traveler Who's Been Lost); 2. Engloutissement (Engulfment); 3. Arrête! Arrête! Elle me tue (Stop it. Stop it. She's Killing Me); 4. Implosion; 5. Le moi divisé (The Divided Self); 6. Citadelle intérieure (Inner Citadel); 7. Pétrification (Petrification); 8. Le message quand vient le soir (The Message at the Coming of Night). The piece focuses on the experience of schizophrenia, something Dhomont calles a "particular form of human tragedy... the dissolution of the being and the exploding of personality, where a universe of implacable confinement is constructed." Recording of Charles Dodge's In Celebration. "In Celebration" was composed during the first part of 1975. The composition tends to capture the spirit and structure of Mark Strand's poem and to give it a coherent sense musically. The poem has a two-part structure separated by the reappearance of the verse "You sit in a chair.” The two parts of the poem can be distinguished from each other by the different degrees of passivity attributed to the "You,” the person to whom the poem is addressed.

Abominable A

Recording of Luigi Ceccarelli's "Abominable A" for magnetic tape. The piece includes the voices of Kadigia Bove, Francesca Furlanetto, Eugenio Giordani, Luciano Martinis, Michela Mollia, Achille Perilli, Marina Poggi, Enrico Pulsoni, Giovanni Puma, Kerstin Riemer, Claudio Rufa, Stefano Scodanibbio, Gaetano Trusso, and Catherine Verwilgen. The piece contains a recitation of all the words in the Italian vocabulary that begin with the letter A, read in sequence from voices with different stamps, rhythms, and intonations. To these are added other sequences in French, German, and English. The work is divided into fifteen sections, each of which has a different criterion for processing the timbre, rhythm, and space. It was realized at the Electronic Laboratory for Experimental Music at the Conservatory "G. Rossini" in Pesaro from 1978 to 1980.

Recording of Gerald Plain's Ripsnorter. The American slang term "ripsnorter" is defined in the dictionary as a thing that is unusually violent. "Ripsnorter" is one of a series of compositions that attempt to incorporate materials that are characteristic of Kentucky. The composer uses the folksong “Joe Clark,” changing the words slightly at the opening of the composition to achieve a gruff-like quality.

Recording of David Rosenboom's "Nazca liftoff et Time Arroyo." David Rosenboom: Nazca Liftoff and Time Arroyo. Nazca Liftoff and Time Arroyo are two sections of a series of seven pieces composed for the album, "Voyage Futur." These are two examples of what the author calls "high performance." These pieces are completely based on algorithms. Direct actions to the computer have the effect of directing the algorithm process to crucial branches and selecting sets of musical materials and / or relationships with what the program performs. All sounds are created by the author with "Key" controlled by computer with digital sound generation and "Patch-IV".

Broken Crystals

Recording of Larry Wendt's Broken Crystals, from "World-Class Technology." It is an extended narration piece that takes the form of a personal recollection. It is narrated by a Silicon Valley worker who works for an integrated circuit foundary that grows garnet crystals for the manufacturing of bubble memory. The factory is overcome with insects that destroy the crystals, and, in response, Silicon Valley is bombed with Cane Toads in order to get rid of the bugs. As a performance piece, the narrative would be read live while the background tape of manipulated environmental sounds along with a vocal processing device to allow immediacy to the live performance. Sometimes performed with theatrics or projected slides.

Recording of Eugeniusz Rudnik's Moulin Diabolique" ("Devilish Mill"). The work consists of six sequence that have their own dramatic, musical, and architectural meaning independent of the piece as a whole. The piece is based on military orders in different languages, as well as the sounds emitted by human groups (soldiers), which constitute the answer itself or accompany the answer that is required. The composer processes the sounds of the orders to deepen the grotesque and lugubrious character that these orders contain.
