Worker Displacement by Artificial Intelligence (AI): The Impact of Boundary-Spanning Employees

Limited literature examines the impact of the displacement of boundary-spanning employees artificial intelligence (AI). Scholars and practitioners appear focused on tangible benefits of AI adoption, and do not seem concerned by any less tangible and possibly untoward implications of worker (particularly boundary-spanning worker) displacement. My dissertation addresses this gap in the literature. In Essay 1, a qualitative study is performed to anchor the research on the appropriate ethnographic setting, the firms where this displacement phenomenon is taking place, by utilizing the Straussian grounded theory approach. The outcome of iterative coding of the first order data collected from the interviews and content analysis is a conceptual framework which amongst other findings shows how the unique competences of boundary-spanning employees and those of AI are best suited for different spectra of interorganizational collaborative activities. In Essays 2 and 3, I investigate major themes that emerged from Essay 1 utilizing quantitative and qualitative research methods in both studies. Initially I test research models using structural equation modelling on practitioner survey data, after which I probe further via focused interviews to better understand the survey results. The two papers allow us to put forth several theoretical and managerial contributions, specifically emphasizing the positive essential …

Workflow for the Quantification of Soluble and Insoluble Carbohydrates in Soybean Seed (open access)

Workflow for the Quantification of Soluble and Insoluble Carbohydrates in Soybean Seed

This article develops and validates a sequential protocol for quantifying reserve and structural carbohydrates in soybean seed. It was successfully applied to eight soybean genotypes harvested from two locations, and the resulting correlations of carbohydrate and oil or protein are presented. This methodology has the potential not only to guide soybean cultivar optimization processes but also to be expanded to other crops with only slight modifications.

Workgroup KM Certification (ISO 30401/DIN SPEC 91443) (open access)

Workgroup KM Certification (ISO 30401/DIN SPEC 91443)

New standards (ISO 30401 and DIN SPEC 91443) provide new momentum for knowledge management initiatives. Certification becomes a priority to demonstrate KM-proficiency on an organizational level to external partners (customers, suppliers, future employees) as well as to create a sense of urgency within organizations, in particular among organizational leadership. In this workshop, a joint working group of two independent communities and a research organisation, the Association of Knowledge Management for German speaking countries and the Federal Association of Intellectual Capital Statements e.V. presents the framework of DIN SPEC 91443 which was designed specifically for SMEs to operationalize the KM requirements of ISO 30401. The general objective of the workshop is to reflect on suitability of various instruments of KM, in particular the Intellectual Capital Statement – Made in Germany, to deliver on the standards requirements. Looking at some practical cases, an early-stage concept of auditing structures and procedures will be discussed. As a result of the workshop, the organizers aim to propose an auditing framework to certify knowledge management systems as a follow up.

A World Famous, Yet Unknown, Countertenor: Basile Bolotine of Serge Jaroff’s Don Cossack Choir

This article concerns the artistry and career of Basile Bolotine, 1895-1981, a beloved countertenor soloist in Serge Jaroff's Don Cossack Choir. It was a world-famous a cappella Russian emigre ensemble that toured extensively all over the non-Soviet world for nearly sixty years. The World We Want to Leave Behind: White Supremacy in the Apocalyptic Genre's Past, Present, and Future

This dissertation examines the rise of the racialized apocalyptic genre from 1978 to 2019. The period chosen reflects the social shift of the American political right into a party that accepts white supremacy as a tenet. In the post-Civil Rights era, white Americans considered the issue of racism to be solved. With the historic Voting Rights Act and other major victories in the 1960s there was a moment when it seemed America may turn a corner. However, when Richard Nixon took office in 1969, he originated what would be a long process of positioning the American right against intellectualism, minorities, and progress. Nixon, and the development of the new southern strategy would reach decades into the future, utilizing coded language and pitting Americans against one another. Research examining the racialized elements of the American right from Nixon to contemporary times is well chronicled and vast.

"Worlds Beyond": A Stylistic Analysis of Collage in the Music of Daniel Schnyder as a Universal Model for the Bass Trombone Repertoire (open access)

"Worlds Beyond": A Stylistic Analysis of Collage in the Music of Daniel Schnyder as a Universal Model for the Bass Trombone Repertoire

The modern trombone player can experience a variety of styles on any given day. There is a need for the ability to switch between a plethora of styles ranging from avant-garde pieces to many forms of popular music to masterworks of the symphonic repertoire. It is the responsibility of the musician (performer or educator) to be familiar with all music due to global access via the internet. There is a responsibility to properly perform and respect music as more composers are beginning to blend different styles, genres, idioms, and cultures within the same composition. Daniel Schnyder is a prominent continuation of this style of musical collage that began with composers such as George Rochberg, Luciano Berio, Bernd Alois Zimmermann, and Charles Ives. The goal of this project is to analyze the stylistic saturation of Daniel Schnyder's Worlds Beyond Suite, focusing on performance and stylistic analysis to aid in an informed performance. This project will highlight the flexibility required by modern trombonists to perform with a deeper understanding of music in multiple styles, as the blending, juxtaposing, and superimposition of style is the universal future of music.
