[Generations]

Photographs of the 1999-2000 artist's book competition winner "Generations," created by Teel Savage. The book is made from onion skin, flowers, and printed text that is adhered to handmade paper with wax coating. The “leaves” of book are circular in shape and bound with a single piece of twine that runs through the center of each leaf, creating a chain-like effect. It is housed in a circular hat box, decorated with handmade paper, flowers, and title, all adhered with wax coating. In the first image the circular onion pages are laid out in a circle, containing either presses flowers or pressed leaves. Starting at the top and going clockwise, words on seven of the circles are seen and say: Time, Cycle, Circle, Generations, Granddaughter, Rebirth, Descendant. Image 2, closeup of "Generations." [The Thin Etched Line]

Photographs of the 1999-2000 artist's book competition honorable mention "The Thin Etched Line" created by Teel Savage. The volume is composed of fragments of intaglio prints of various styles and subjects, on which a single red line was added across every image. It is bound in white paper-covered boards with a red line, sewn Coptic style. The first image shows the bound book opened up. [The Better to See You With]

Photographs of the 2001-2002 artist's book competition winner "The Better to See You With" created by Herman Iselin. Wolf fur binding and embroidered red velvet end papers enclose pages with the story of Little Red Riding Hood embossed in Braille. The book was designed as a concept piece, which would allow a blind child to experience the story of Little Red Riding Hood. The cover of the book is a square shaped blob of grey fur. [A Space Between Us]

Photographs of the 2003-2004 artist's book competition winner "A Space Between Us" created by Lisa Tristan Mellot (aka Elizabeth Mellott-Carreon). Each of the twelve volumes of A Space Between Us consists of fired clay covers that enclose handmade paper pages. The pages open as a triptych to reveal contrasting statements about how the artist related with her mother at various ages and how her mother related with the artist's grandmother at the same ages. Beneath the pages are recessed compartments containing found objects. [Book in a Steel Box]

Photographs of the 2005-2006 artist's book competition winner "Book in a Steel Box" created by Eric Blake. A small cloth-bound volume with graphite lines throughout is welded into a steel box. The book is visible along the spine and fore-edge through steel bars. The box does not open, and the book cannot be removed, making it an "inaccessible text." [20 Soldiers a Day]

Photographs of the 2009-2010 artist's book competition winner "20 Soldiers a Day" created by Jung Eun Lee (or Jungeun Lee). The artist's book is a Japanese-sewn volume consisting of double-leaves sewn together. The recto of each leaf has a changing pattern of stains and marks, and the verso of each leaf has text from the inner surface becoming more and more visible as the reader moves through the volume. The next-to-last leaf has complete text, the testimony of a young Korean girl who was forced into sexual slavery at a comfort station for Japanese military personnel in Taiwan during World War II. The volume is tied closed with triple-strand white string and is wrapped in a stained square of white cloth that is tied with twine. [Grilled Cheese]

Photographs of the 2009-2010 artist's book competition honorable mention "Grilled Cheese" created by Carlynn Field. The book is a sculptural representation of a grilled cheese sandwich made of yellow fabric, printed fabric, hand-dyed silk, and batting. When opened, the "cheese" is revealed to be a long accordion-folded strip of cloth, each panel with an embroidered representation of the steps to make a grilled cheese sandwich. The volume is presented on a blue heavy plastic circular plate. The first image is of the grilled cheese sitting on a blue paper plate. Image 2, the grilled cheese is laying on a blue plate, one of the "slices" sticking out has a flower-like print. Image 3, the cloth grilled cheese pages are opened up to the yellow inside, the page on the left has a white flower pattern with orange dots around it. [Response to Stress]

Photographs of the 2011-2012 artist's book competition winner "Response to Stress" created by Catherine Snapp Lavoie. The books contains no text. It is an accordion-fold book with five panels of double card stock joined together with one piece of cloth running in between the two layers of the panels. The verso and recto of each panel features collages in pastel earth tone colors. Pieces of crochet thread are applied to both recto and verso of the three panels. One panel has thread on the verso, the remaining on the recto only. The book is housed in a clam shell box that is covered in two-tone letterpress paper. The first image is the book opened up showing the pattern on the panels that are splashes of tan/yellow colors, stretched out in front of the case with a splotch of tan over it. [Surveying transit tool]

Two photographs of a surveying transit tool from the Byrd Williams Family Photography Collection, held by UNT Special Collections. The first image is of the tool alone, pointing to the distance at an angle so that a majority of the parts are visible. It is made out of a bronze material with glass parts and it is attached to a wooden base. The second image is of the tool and the box that it is stored it. [Cracked spine of Bleak House]

Photograph of 'Bleak House' held by UNT Special Collections. It is a novel written by Charles Dickens and the illustration is done by Hablot K. Browne. The spine and cover are done in a maroon color and the material on the spine is cracked down the middle. The top and sides are also worn down and fraying. There are painted gold lines breaking up the spine into five separate chambers and the title is printed in gold in the second one.
