QCD sum rule calculation of {gamma}{gamma}{sup *} {r_arrow} {pi}{sup 0} transition form factor

The authors develop a QCD sum rule analysis of the form factor F{sub {gamma}{sup *}{gamma}{sup *}{pi}{sup 0}}(q{sup 2},Q{sup 2}) in the region where virtuality of one of the spacelike photons is small q{sup 2} {much_lt} 1 GeV{sup 2} while another is large: Q{sup 2} {approx_gt} 1 GeV{sup 2}. They construct the operator product expansion suitable for this kinematic situation and obtain a QCD sum rule for F{sub {gamma}{sup *}{gamma}{sup *}{pi}{sup 0}}(0, Q{sup 2}). Their results confirm expectation that the momentum transfer dependence of F{sub {gamma}{sup *}{gamma}{sup *}{pi}{sup 0}}(0,Q{sup 2}) is close to interpolation between its Q{sup 2}=0 value fixed by the axial anomaly and Q{sup {minus}2} pQCD behavior for large Q{sup 2}. Their approach, in contrast to pQCD, does not require additional assumptions about the shape of the pion distribution amplitude {var_phi}{sub {pi}}(x). The absolute value of the 1/Q{sup 2} term obtained in this paper favors {var_phi}{sub {pi}}(x) close to the asymptotic form {var_phi}{sub {pi}}{sup as}(x) = 6f{sub {pi}}x(1{minus}x).

Rapidity dependence of the inclusive J/{Psi} production in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV

We have studied J/{psi} production in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV with the D0 detector at Fermilab, using a {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}} data sample collected during the 1994--1995 collider run. We have measured the inclusive J/{psi} production cross section as a function of the J/{psi} transverse momentum, p{sub T}{sup J/{psi}}, in the central and forward rapidity regions. The cross section d{sigma}/dp{sub T}{sup J/{psi}} for {vert_bar}{eta}{sup J/{psi}}{vert_bar}<0.6 covers the p{sub T}{sup J/{psi}} range from 8 to 20 GeV/c. The new measurements are in a good agreement with the CDF and earlier D0 results. The cross section d{sigma}/dp{sub T}{sup J/{psi}} for 2.6 <{vert_bar}{eta}{sup J/{psi}}{vert_bar}<3.4 covers the p{sub T}{sup J/{psi}} range from 3 to 12 GeV/c. We combine the measurements in the two {vert_bar}{eta}{sup J/{psi}}{vert_bar} regions to calculate d{sigma}/d{eta}{sup J/{psi}} for p{sub T}{sup J/{psi}} > 8 GeV/c. The data are compared with the next-to-leading (NLO) QCD calculations, which take into account different J/{psi} production mechanisms.

Developing a Panelboard Trainer Using SIMVOX and PROVOX

Several challenges existed in creating a system that would be valuable for training operators: the robustness and accuracy of the process model, the operator interface to the process, and the communication between the operator interface and the process models. Cost and implementation time were also important factors. Two possible implementation plans were examined. The first option was to develop a computer tool through which the operator could operate the process through interaction with the mouse and keyboard. The entire panel board system could be created in computer graphics and a process model attached. The second option was to construct a complete replica of the control room panelboard in a training environment. Operations personnel expressed a strong preference for creating the panel board replica. Concerns were expressed about the comfort level of the operators training on a computer tool, and the value of the operators becoming thoroughly familiar with the physical location of the equipment in the panelboard was believed to be high. It was therefore decided to create a replica of the control room panelboard.

The endcap Cherenkov ring imaging detector at SLD

The authors present the Cherenkov Ring Imaging Detector in the endcap regions of the SLD detector and report initial performance. The endcap CRID was completed and commissioned in 1993 and is fully operational for the 1994 run. First Cherenkov rings have been observed. The endcap CRID detectors and fluid systems are described and initial operational experience is discussed.

International nuclear waste management fact book

The International Nuclear Waste Management Fact Book has been compiled to provide current data on fuel cycle and waste management facilities, R and D programs, and key personnel in 24 countries, including the US; four multinational agencies; and 20 nuclear societies. This document, which is in its second year of publication supersedes the previously issued International Nuclear Fuel Cycle Fact Book (PNL-3594), which appeared annually for 12 years. The content has been updated to reflect current information. The Fact Book is organized as follows: National summaries--a section for each country that summarizes nuclear policy, describes organizational relationships, and provides addresses and names of key personnel and information on facilities. International agencies--a section for each of the international agencies that has significant fuel cycle involvement and a list of nuclear societies. Glossary--a list of abbreviations/acronyms of organizations, facilities, and technical and other terms. The national summaries, in addition to the data described above, feature a small map for each country and some general information that is presented from the perspective of the Fact Book user in the US.

K-Basin spent nuclear fuel characterization data report

The spent nuclear fuel (SNF) project characterization activities will be furnishing technical data on SNF stored at the K Basins in support of a pathway for placement of a ``stabilized`` form of SNF into an interim storage facility. This report summarizes the results so far of visual inspection of the fuel samples, physical characterization (e.g., weight and immersion density measurements), metallographic examinations, and controlled atmosphere furnace testing of three fuel samples shipped from the KW Basin to the Postirradiation Testing Laboratory (PTL). Data on sludge material collected by filtering the single fuel element canister (SFEC) water are also discussed in this report.

A cell model for homogenization of fiber-reinforced composites: General theory and nonlinear elasticity effects

The theoretical basis of the homogenization technique developed by Aboudi is presented and assessed. Given the constitutive relations of the constituents, this technique provides an equivalent, homogeneous, constitutive model of unidirectional, continuous-fiber-reinforced composites. The expressions that comprise the first-order version of the technique are given special attention as this treatment has considerable practical value. Nonlinear elasticity effects are added to it. This extension increases the accuracy of numerical simulations of high strain-rate loadings. It is particularly important for any dynamic loading in which shock waves might be produced, including crash safety, armor, and munitions applications. Examples illustrate that elastic nonlinearity can make substantial contributions at strains of only a few per cent. These contributions are greatest during post-yield inelastic deformation. The micromechanics-based homogenization technique is shown to facilitate use of an efficient approximate treatment of elastic nonlinearity in composites with isotropic matrix materials.

Electron irradiation-induced mechanical property changes in reactor pressure vessel alloys

High-energy electrons were used to study tensile property changes in simple Fe-Cu and Fe-Cu-Mn alloys irradiated at 288C. A comparison was made with neutron irradiation data on the same alloys. An apparent effect of alloy chemistry was observed in which the presence of Mn affected embrittlement differently for electron and neutron irradiation. Comparison of previous experimental studies with the present experimental results indicates that electrons may be more efficient than fast neutrons at producing embrittlement.

New instrumentation in Argonne`s HVEM-Tamdem Facility: Expanded capability for in situ ion beam studies

During 1995, a state-of-the-art intermediate voltage electron microscope (IVEM) has been installed in the HVEM-Tandem Facility with in situ ion irradiation capabilities similar to those of the HVEM. A 300 kV Hitachi H-9000NAR has been interfaced to the two ion accelerators of the Facility, with a spatial resolution for imaging which is nearly an order of magnitude better than that for the 1.2 MV HVEM which dates from the early 1970s. The HVEM remains heavily utilized for electron- and ion irradiation-related materials studies, nevertheless, especially those for which less demanding microscopy is adequate. The capabilities and limitations of this IVEM and HVEM are compared. Both the HVEM and IVEM are part of the DOE funded User Facility and therefore are available to the scientific community for materials studies, free of charge for non-proprietary research.

Filter component assessment

The objectives of this program are to provide a more ruggedized filter system that utilizes porous ceramic filters which have improved resistance to damage resulting from crack propagation, thermal fatigue and/or thermal excursions during plant or process transient conditions, and/or mechanical ash bridging events within the candle filter array. As part of the current Phase 1, Task 1, effort of this program, Westinghouse is evaluating the filtration characteristics, mechanical integrity, and corrosion resistance of the following advanced or second generation candle filters for use in advanced coal-fired process applications: 3M CVI-SiC composite--chemical vapor infiltration of silicon carbide into an aluminosilicate Nextel{trademark} 312 fiber preform; DuPont PRD-66--filament wound candle filter structure containing corundum, cordierite, cristobalite, and mullite; DuPont SiC-SiC--chemical infiltration of silicon carbide into a silicon carbide Nicalon{trademark} fiber mat or felt preform; and IF and P Fibrosic{trademark}--vacuum infiltrated oxide-based chopped fibrous matrix. Results to date are presented.

Exploitation of secondary vertex information at the CDF detector. Final report, 1991--1994

In the proposal for this work, submitted in November 1990, the author described the application of silicon micro-vertex tracking to hadron collider physics, and outlined a plan of involvement in the first such application, at the CDF Detector, studying p{anti p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. The proposal included discussion on the use of silicon tracking in B physics measurements, and also some speculation on the ability of silicon tracking to aid in identification of the top quark. In the five years since this proposal, the author has played a significant role in the installation and commissioning of the first such silicon tracking device at a hadron collider, and the utilization of this device in the discovery of the top quark and the study of B production mechanisms. This paper is a summary of this work.

Corrosion of low-carbon steel under environmental conditions at Hanford: Two-year soil corrosion test results

At the Hanford Site, located in southeastern Washington state, nuclear production reactors were operated from 1944 to 1970. The handling and processing of radioactive nuclear fuels produced a large volume of low-level nuclear wastes, chemical wastes, and a combination of the two (mixed wastes). These materials have historically been packaged in US Department of Transportation (DOT) approved drums made from low-carbon steel, then handled in one of three ways: (A) Before 1970, the drums were buried in the dry desert soil. It was assumed that chemical and radionuclide mobility would be low and that the isolated, government-owned site would provide sufficient protection for employees and the public. (B) After 1970, the drums containing long-lived transuranic radionuclides were protected from premature failure by stacking them in an ordered array on an asphalt concrete pad in the bottom of a burial trench. The array was then covered with a large, 0.28-mm- (011-in.-) thick polyethylene tarp and the trench was backfilled with 1.3 m (4 ft) of soil cover. This burial method is referred to as soil-shielded burial . Other configurations were also employed but the soil-shielded burial method contains most of the transuranic drums.
