This report presents an extensive literature survey on bubble dynamics. Growth of a single spherical bubble moving in a uniformly superheated liquid is considered. Equations of motion and energy are presented in the forms that take into consideration the interaction between the motion and the growth. The fourth-order Runge-Kutta method is used to obtain a simultaneous solution of equations of motion and growth rate, and the solution is compared with available experimental results. Results for liquid sodium are presented for a range of pressures and Jakob numbers.

Abstract: This report summarizes the criteria for selection of those accidents to be investigated, the investigation procedures, and the accident data obtained for the 28 in depth investigations.

Quarterly report on activities related to the reactor safety program and reactor core thermal-hydraulic code development performed in the Components Technology Division.

The fuel utilization characteristics for LWR, SSCR, CANDU and LMFBR reactor concepts are quantified for various fuel cycle options, including once-through cycles, thorium cycles, and denatured cycles. The implications of various alternative reactor deployment strategies on the long-term nuclear power growth potential are then quantified in terms of the maximum nuclear capacity that can be achieved and the growth pattern over time, subject to the constraint of a fixed uranium-resource base. The overall objective of this study is to shed light on any large differences in the long-term potential that exist between various alternative reactor/fuel cycle deployment strategies.

A mechanized ultrasonic test system was developed and built at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) to conduct the first in-service inspection of the 2.25 Cr- 1 Mo steel duplex tubing in the EBR-II steam-generator system. This inspection required tube inspection from the bore side, complete volumetric examination, wall-thickness measurement, and evaluation of the braze condition. The test equipment was thoroughly checked and routinely calibrated, using a standard containing artificial flaws. Artificial flaws as small as 1.6 mm long by 0.23 mm deep were readily detected.

Nine elements from each batch of fuel elements manufactured for the EBR-II reactor have been analyzed for uranium-235 content by NDA methods. These values, together with those of the manufacturer, are used to estimate the product variance and the variances of the two measuring methods. These variances are compared with the variances computed from the stipulations of the contract. A method is derived for resolving the several variances into their within-batch and between-batch components. Some of these variance components have also been estimated by independent and more familiar conventional methods for comparison.

From purpose and scope: This report provides basic information on the ground-water resources of Chester County, Pennsylvania, which is an area of about 760 square miles (1970 meters) in southeastern Pennsylvania. It discusses the availability and quality of the water in the water-bearing units in the county and the relation of the ground water to surface water.

This report follows the study of the sedimentary and hydraulic processes in Long Island Sound near Green Ledge, Connecticut, and Eaton's Neck, New York with the intention of investigating was to evaluate the effects of aquatic disposal of dredged material on organisms and water quality, including the significance of physical, chemical, and biological factors that influence the rate of disposal site recolonization by benthic animals.

The following report presents the results of a investigation to determine the baseline conditions of the phytoplankton population at the disposal site for future comparison with similar data collected after the disposal of dredged material.

Purpose and scope: This report is intended to identify many of the causes of saline-water intrusion into freshwater aquifers in Lee County, and to describe some of the effects of the intrusion on ground-water quality. Particular emphasis is placed on saline-water intrusion as related to the construction, operation, and maintenance of wells drilled primarily for water-supply, and to the plugging of wells that are no longer used.

From abstract: Planning waste-disposal facilities and impoundments is complicated by karst carbonate terrane in the Ozarks. Thermal imagery (8-13 micrometer wavelength) and color infrared photography aid in identifying losing streams, sinkholes and hydrologic conditions encouraging collapse. Imagery and photography were acquired in Greene and Reynold Counties, Mo., in March 1972 and June 1973. Differences in thermal levels correlating with losing and gaining reaches of Logan Creek valley, Reynolds County, were not visually apparent in predawn March imagery but statistical analysis of predawn magnetic-tape data indicated greater variance in emitted energy from the losing reach than from the gaining reach.

From abstract: Water-quality reconnaissance by the U.S. Geological Survey and Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, to evaluate the status of Ohio's lakes and reservoirs was begun in 1975 with studies of 17 lakes. Spring and summer data collections for each lake included: profile measurements of temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and specific conductance; field and laboratory analyses of physical, biological, chemical (nutrient), and organic characteristics; concentrations of major and minor chemical constituents from composites of the water column; and physical and chemical data from major inflows.
