Polarization of Bremsstrahlung

Abstract: Numerical information necessary to an experimental study of the polarization of bremsstrahlung is presented. One may conclude that it is possible to produce significantly polarized γ-ray beams with existing electron accelerators. These beams will provide a new tool for the study of photonuclear reactions over a wide range of energy.

An Improved Gamma Detector Using Gamma Moderation

Abstract: "Theoretical and experimental results of the effect of gamma moderation are described. A 6.7-fold enhancement factor was obtained with a 1/8-in. - thick sodium-iodide crystal when using gamma moderation and a Co-60 gamma source. A counter was designed and built to make the most use of gamma source. A counter was designed and built to make the most use of gamma moderation. The results indicate that this counter can be made energy independent over a wide region. Though the cost of the counter is about 1/3 that of a 1-in, -diam, 1-in. -thick sodium-iodide crystal plus photomultiplier, the counting efficiency for gammas such as Na-24 is over two times greater."

A study of the zero-lift drag-rise characteristics of wing-body combinations near the speed of sound

Comparisons of the shock phenomena and drag-rise increments for representative wing and central-body combinations with those for bodies of revolution with the same axial distributions of cross-sectional area normal to the air stream. An investigation was also presented of representative wing-body combinations with the body so indented that the axial distributions of cross-sectional areas for the combinations were the same as that for the original body. Results regarding unswept wing and cylindrical body, delta wing and cylindrical body, swept wing and cylindrical body, swept wing and curved body, and applications of the transonic drag-rise concept are provided.

A series of flight tests have been made at the Langley Flight Research Division at the request of the Bureau of Aeronautics, Department of the Navy, to determine the flying qualities of the Grumman F8F-1 air- plane. This paper presents the test results necessary to determine the longitudinal stability and control characteristics end the stalling characteristics. The range of Mach numbers covered in this investigation was approximately 0.10 to 0.62, and no attempt was made to investigate compressibility effects at higher Mach numbers.

Flight Investigation of the Knock-Limited Performance of a Triptane Blend, a Toluene Blend, and 28-R Fuel in an R-1830-75 Engine

"Knock-limited performance data were obtained for three fuels on an R-1830-75 engine in a B-24D airplane at engine speeds of 1800, 2250, and 2600 rpm, a spark advance of 25 degrees B.T.C., and carburetor-air temperatures of 85 F for 1800 and 2250 rpm and 100 F for 2600 rpm. The test fuels were a blend of 80 percent 28-R plus 20 percent triptane (leaded to 4.5 ml TEL/gal), a blend of 80 percent 28-R plus 15 percent toluene (leaded to 4.5 ml TEL / gal), and 28-R fuel. The knock-limited manifold pressure of the toluene blend depreciated more in the lean region than the triptane blend or 28-R fuel" (p. 1).

Current-Carrying Capacity and Transition State of Superconducting Solenoids

Montgomery and Chandrasekhar and Hulm suggested models for predicting Im and Hm of high-field superconducting solenoids. Montgomery's model for predicting the degradation effect of superconducting solenoids leads to a unique coil quenching characteristics if geometrically similar solenoids are considered. Experiments do not verify these predicted results. Chandrasekhar and Hulm's model leads to one unique coil quenching characteristic for all solenoids with identical wire type and turn distance; coils with identical load factor should display identical values im and Hm. An analysis of the surface currents in an ideal superconducting infinitely long solenoid demonstrated possible forms of shielding currents. Experiments with Pb coils with and without NbZr and compensation agree with results expected from this analysis, but contradict Chandrasekhar and Hulm's model. Measurements of individual turn resistances show behavior of a soft superconductor solenoid in the intermediate state.
