Drag Measurements on a Junkers Wing Section: Application of the Betz Method to the Results of Comparative Tests Made on a Model and on an Airplane in Flight
The comparison of model tests in flight can be based on the result of such measurements. They are very important from the aerodynamical point of view, as they lead to useful conclusions regarding the behavior of the wing, its best shape and the conformity of theoretical and actual flow. Although there still remains a certain prejudice against such measurements, I have still attempted to make these comparative tests in order to inspire confidence in their reliability.

Recent Developments in the Construction and Operation of All-Metal Airplanes
Experiments on the effect of atmosphere and of sea water on the building materials employed by us have been carried on for years in the North Sea with the aid of the Hamburg Naval Observatory. Parallel experiments are being made at the Pisa Naval Observatory in the Mediterranean Sea. Metal sheets, sections, assemblies and experimental floats are being exposed to the action of the elements. Different construction techniques are discussed and a variety of specific airplanes are presented which incorporate some of the new thinking.

Experiments With Airplane Brakes
This report begins by examining the forces on the brake shoes. For the determination of the load distribution over the shoes it was assumed that the brake linings follow Hooke's law, are neatly fitted and bedded in by wear. The assumption of Hooke's law, that is, the proportionality between compression of the lining and the absorption of force, is fulfilled to a certain extent for the loading, as becomes apparent from the load tests described further on. But there is a material discrepancy at unloading.

Travel of the Center of Pressure of Airfoils Transversely to the Air Stream
The experiments here described were performed for the purpose of obtaining the essential facts concerning the distribution of the air force along the span. We did not follow, however, the time-consuming method of point-to-point measurements of the pressure distribution on the wing surfaces, but determined directly the moment of mean force about an axis passing through the middle of the span parallel to the direction of flight.

Load Assumptions for Calculating the Strength of Airplanes
"The following load assumptions shall be taken as the basis of the strength calculations. Certain definite load conditions (e.g. of flight, control, landing and transport) shall be assumed. The loads shall be assumed to be safe loads, constant or only slowly variable, and the inertia forces due to elastic deformation are accordingly disregarded. The external forces, the force of gravity and the inertia forces on the whole airplane shall produce a condition of equilibrium" (p. 1).

On Floats and Float Tests
The principal source of information on float resistance is the model test. In view of the insuperable difficulties opposing any attempt at theoretical treatment of the resistance problem, particularly at attitudes which tend toward satisfactory take-off, such as the transitory stage to planing, the towing test is and will remain the primary method for some time.

Fatigue Resistance of Duralumin
Where, in the following report, mention is made of fatigue, it always refers to the weakening of the material produced by rapidly changing stresses below the point of elasticity. The alternating stress was obtained by a test bar which was held at one end and subjected to rotation. Most of the tests were conducted on connecting rods.

Problem of Glider Models
Any one endeavoring to solve the problem of soaring flight is confronted not only by structural difficulties, but also by the often far more difficult aerodynamic problem of flight properties and efficiency, which can only be determined by experimenting with the finished glider.
