A study of air flow in an engine cylinder

A 4-stroke-cycle test engine was equipped with a glass cylinder and the air movements within it were studied while the engine was being motored. Different types of air flow were produced by using shrouded intake valves in various arrangements and by altering the shape of the intake-air passage in the cylinder head. The air movements were made visible by mixing feathers with the entering air, and high-speed motion pictures were taken of them so that the air currents might be studied in detail and their velocities measured. Motion pictures were also taken of gasoline sprays injected into the cylinder on the intake stroke. The photographs showed that: a wide variety of induced air movements could be created in the cylinder; the movements always persisted throughout the compression stroke; and the only type of movement that persisted until the end of the cycle was rotation about the cylinder axis.

Uranium Oxide Slurry Pumping Experiments

Abstract: Experiments on colloid milling and pumping show that uranium trioxide, when carefully dehydrated, can be dispersed in water to form a relatively stable slurry, suitable for a homogeneous slurry pile. At temperatures considerably below those of anticipated pile operation particle size growth occurs attended by increase in settling rate and decrease in viscosity. Theses properties of the slurries may be strongly affected by impurities present as well as by special operating conditions.

A comparison of two submerged inlets at subsonic and transonic speeds

Report presenting an investigation of the operation of two submerged-type inlets in a wind tunnel at subsonic and transonic speeds. The pressure recovery was relatively constant throughout the lower subsonic speed range. The ability of the divergent-walled inlet to operate with satisfactory pressure recovery at higher free-stream Mach numbers than was possible with the parallel-walled inlet is attributed to the difference in the boundary-layer characteristics of the two types of inlets.

Some Features of Artificially Thickened Fully Developed Turbulent Boundary Layers with Zero Pressure Gradient

Report gives an account of an investigation conducted to determine the feasibility of artificially thickening a turbulent boundary layer on a flat plate. A description is given of several methods used to thicken artificially the boundary layer. It is shown that it is possible to do substantial thickening and obtain a fully developed turbulent boundary layer, which is free from any distortions introduced by the thickening process, and, as such, is a suitable medium for fundamental research.

Determination of Bismuth in Plutonium-Bismuth Solutions

Bismuth analytical methods were investigated for the purpose of selecting procedures which are satisfactory for the analysis of solutions containing plutonium and bismuth. The gravimetric procedure which is recommended for samples containing these two elements includes removal of the plutonium by peroxide precipitation, separation of the bismuth by precipitation with sodium carbonate, and final ignition of the bismuth as a phosphate. Necessary equipment and experimental technique are described. In the analysis of eight known samples by the recommended method, the average recovery of bismuth was 99.76 percent, with a standard deviation of 0.22 percent. The known samples contained about 35 mg of bismuth and 25 mg of plutonium. For similar samples in routine work, the confidence limits at the 95 percent level for the average of triplicated determinations are +- 0.30 percent of the bismuth in the the sample. Other methods investigated and having possible application for some Pu-Bi analysis problems include electrodeposition of bismuth on a mercury cathode and gravimetric analysis with BiCr(CNS)6 as the weighed product.

Determination of Cadmium in Plutonium-Cadmium Solutions

Determination of cadmium in plutonium-cadmium solutions was successfully accomplished by separating the plutonium as an insoluble peroxide, evaporating the solution containing the cadmium, and weighing the latter as a sulfate. with 5 t0 20 mg of cadmium and similar amounts of plutonium, the 95% confidence limits for the average of triplicate determinations was to be +- 0.3 percent of the cadmium in the sample. When samples contained as little as 5 mg of cadmium, it was necessary to correct the weight of cadmium sulfate with a carefully determined reagent blank which originated mainly from the action of hydrogen peroxide on glass containers.

Report presenting a wind-tunnel investigation at low speeds to determine the lateral-control and hinge-moment characteristics of a 20-percent-chord, unsealed, partial-span outboard aileron equipped with an overhang, a paddle, or a spoiler balance on a tapered 51.3 degree sweptback semispan wing model with an aspect ratio of 3.05. The aileron effectiveness was not greatly affected by the overhang or paddle balance, but the spoiler balance increased the effectiveness obtained with the plain flap.

Total-pressure ratio, mass-flow ratio, and static pressure distribution along the ramp and main body were obtained at angles of attack of 0 and 6 degrees for a side inlet location. The results showed that the maximum total-pressure ratio attainable with the submerged inlet decreased from 0.83 at a Mach number of 1.17 to 0.52 at a Mach number of 1.99.
