Application of pulsed electron beam vaporization to studies of UO/sub 2/. [LMFBR] (open access)

Application of pulsed electron beam vaporization to studies of UO/sub 2/. [LMFBR]

A method for determining the pressure versus internal energy coordinates of the liquid-vapor saturation curve is applied to the study of UO/sub 2/. The experimental details and results of an initial series of tests are described. A comparison of the measurement results to models of the UO/sub 2/ equation of state illustrates the role of the heat capacity in describing the P--E characteristics of the state surface. A discussion of the available heat capacity information suggests that additional modeling and measurements of the heat capacity may be needed to give a complete temperature and energy dependent state surface description. Because of these modeling uncertainties, a method of thermodynamically describing the P(V, E) state surface entirely through the use of dynamic vapor measurements is given. Such a model satisfies transient thermomechanical analysis requirements. Next the effect of the state surface on one type of core disruptive reactor analysis is examined. And finally, the property determinations and models for UO/sub 2/ are reviewed with requirements for future work being outlined.

Radiochemical analyses of soil and vegetation samples taken from the Hanford environs, 1971--1976 (open access)

Radiochemical analyses of soil and vegetation samples taken from the Hanford environs, 1971--1976

Soil and vegetation have routinely been collected on the Hanford Site and surrounding environs as one method of monitoring radionuclide concentrations potentially attributable to Hanford operations. With the exception of a few locations, the data indicate that Hanford operations have made no significant contribution to existing radionuclide concentrations in soil and vegetation. Most of the activity seen in the samples can be attributed to natural causes or worldwide atmospheric fallout. The few locations apparently impacted by Hanford operations were: east of the California Nuclear burial site, which showed elevated levels of /sup 60/Co in soil and vegetation; northeast of the 1301-N trench, which showed elevated levels of /sup 54/Mn, /sup 60/Co, and /sup 134/Cs in soil and /sup 60/Co in vegetation; Columbia River island at river mile 340 (near North Richland), which showed elevated levels of /sup 60/Co; and east of 200 West Area, which showed elevated levels of Pu in soil.

A Chemist's Gamma-Ray Table* (open access)

A Chemist's Gamma-Ray Table*

An edited listing of gamma-ray information has been prepared. Prominent gamma rays originating from nuclides with half lives long enough to be seen in radiochemical experiments are included. Information is ordered by nuclide in one section and by energy in a second section. This shorter listing facilitates identification of nuclides responsible for gamma rays observed in experiments.

Assessment of very high-temperature reactors in process applications. Appendix II. VHTR process heat application studies (open access)

Assessment of very high-temperature reactors in process applications. Appendix II. VHTR process heat application studies

A critical review is presented of the technology and economics for coupling a very high-temperature gas-cooled reactor to a variety of process applications. It is concluded that nuclear steam reforming of light hydrocarbons for coal conversion could be a near-term alternative and that direct nuclear coal gasification could be a future consideration. Thermochemical water splitting appears to be more costly and its availability farther in the future than the coal-conversion systems. Nuclear steelmaking is competitive with the direct reduction of iron ore from conventional coal-conversion processes but not competitive with the reforming of natural gas at present gas prices. Nuclear process heat for petroleum refining, even with the necessary backup systems, is competitive with fossil energy sources. The processing with nuclear heat of oil shale and tar sands is of marginal economic importance. An analysis of peaking power applications using nuclear heat was also made. It is concluded that steam reforming methane for energy storage and production of peaking power is not a viable economic alternative, but that energy storage with a high-temperature heat transfer salt (HTS) is competitive with conventional peaking systems. An examination of the materials required in process heat exchangers is made.

Generalized Oscillator Strengths. Final Technical Report, January 1, 1970--July 1, 1977. [Summaries of Research Activities at Carnegie-Mellon University] (open access)

Generalized Oscillator Strengths. Final Technical Report, January 1, 1970--July 1, 1977. [Summaries of Research Activities at Carnegie-Mellon University]

Progress in the study of generalized oscillator strengths since January 1, 1970 is reviewed. The status of methods for the experimental determination of electron collision cross sections and generalized oscillator strengths is discussed including the comparison of inelastic and elastic scattering when elastic cross sections are available, the use of a comparison gas with a transition of known cross section, and the determination of optical oscillator strengths from forward scattering spectra. Outstanding discrepancies between limiting generalized oscillator strengths (at zero momentum change) and optical oscillator strengths are resolved for the most part. There are no longer any outstanding discrepancies involving refractive indices. Two new selection rules, one relating to singlet-singlet transitions, the other to singlet-triplet transitions are described. Other deviations from the Born approximation at large momentum changes are discussed. Generalized oscillator strengths are applied to the calculation of cross sections (in Born approximation) for resonant energy transfer in collision between two molecules one of which is excited. A list of publications is included.

Effects of the drought on California electricity supply and demand (open access)

Effects of the drought on California electricity supply and demand

At the end of the driest year on record, California faces water shortages whose impacts will be felt with progressive severity through the summer and fall of 1977. Electric power is not entirely exempt from these impacts and could, if severly affected, compound the direct distresses of the drought. Each of the major California electric utility companies has forecasted the short-term effects on electricity supply and demand in its service area. The study reported here undertook an independent analysis to provide a statewide assessment of impacts and remedial actions and to develop additional analytical tools and data for these purposes. The study examined various aspects of the drought as it relates to electricity supply and demand, reliability of supply to meet summer peak loads, the efficacy of conservation measures, and probable increases in power plant emissions and cost of generating electricity. The results of the study, based in part on the 1977 electricity supply and demand projections submitted by the four utilities to the California Energy Resources Conservation and Development Commission (CERCDC), support the utilities' conclusions that the three southern California utilities have sufficient reserve capacity and fuel to meet their own needs and to assist PG and E in …
