Photograph used for a story in the Oklahoma City Times newspaper. Caption: "A deadly blind spot extends 25 feet behind your automobile. If you're not watching, you could back your car out your driveway and kill a child. The first time you see this child will be after the car has passed over his body. he'll never know you're coming. This month, two children have died under the wheels of automobiles that were backed out of driveways. Both were little girls - one 13 months and the other 18 months old. One of them died just moments after the driver of the death car talked with her in her front yard..........Police suggest the easiest way to see if there is anyone there is to step back there and look before you ever get in the car. Notice all children nearby. Keep them in sight while backing out of the driveway. "You can't be too careful when you're backing," <aj. Clay Scheid, traffic division commander, said. Impossible as it would seem, the driver of this car cannot see, in his rear view mirror, any of the dozen children behind him. And, they aren't paying attention to move if he should start …

Photograph used for a story in the Daily Oklahoman newspaper. Caption: "it goes from Chicago to LA, more than 2,000 miles along the way. "Get your kicks on Route 66." "Main Street of America"-will cease to exist. It will live only in the memories of two generations of cross-country travelers, or in the words of Bobby Troup's song, composed as ne motored along the route in its heyday. West of Oklahoma City, U.S. 66 has almost disappeared. In most places, its name has been changed to I-40 and in another five years, the tranformation will be complete. To the east, U.S. 66 still meanders toward Tulsa and up into Missouri, but turnpike-hugging travelers choose to ignore it. California-bound Okies are on the interstates now, their chrome-trimmed pickups and red convertibles and sleek sedans gliding 70 miles an hour into the future. They don't remember the mud and gravel and detours that their predecessors encountered. They don't know the hazards of suddenly rising rivers or sand that could swallow a car until even mules strained to pull it free. To turn the clock back, a curious traveler need to go no farther than Bridgeport, a tiny farm community west of Oklahoma …
