Results regarding an investigation to determine the horizontal- and vertical-tail contributions to the static lateral stability of a complete-model swept-wing configuration at high subsonic speeds. Generally, Mach number effects within the range studied and wing effects on the tail contribution were small and the overall trends of the data of the present investigation agreed with those which have been established at low speeds.

Estimation of Incremental Pitching Moments Due to Trailing-Edge Flaps on Swept and Triangular Wings

Report presenting a method by which incremental pitching moments can be estimated for swept and triangular wings with arbitrary types of trailing-edge high-lift flaps. Span-loading theory is combined with two-dimensional airfoil data adjusted for the effects of sweep. Application of the method is demonstrated for 58 cases covering various types of flaps on wings with a wide range of sweep, aspect ratio, and taper ratio.

Friction, wear, and surface damage of metals as affected by solid surface films

"As predicted by friction theory, experiments showed that friction and surface damage of metals can be reduced by solid surface films. The ability of materials to form surface films that prevent welding was a very important factor in wear of dry and boundary lubricated surfaces. Films of graphitic carbon on cast irons, NiO on nickel alloys, and FeO and Fe(sub 3)O(sub 4) on ferrous materials were found to be beneficial. Abrasive films such as Fe(sub 2)O(sub 3) or MoO(sub 3) were definitely detrimental. It appears that the importance of oxide films to friction and wear processes has not been fully appreciated" (p. 93).

Memorandum presenting a procedure for obtaining qualitative information on the effectiveness of different slot configurations to make the flow of the cooling air visible. Two methods are utilized: one utilizes the traces caused by a reaction between paint spread over the blade surface and a gas mixed with the cooling air, while the other utilized smoke mixed with the cooling air to make it visible. From the visual observations, the use of a continuous slot as a means of creating the cooling film over the blade surface appeared to be superior to the use of holes or grooves.

Wind-Tunnel Investigation at a Mach Number of 2.01 of the Aerodynamic Characteristics in Combined Angles of Attack and Sideslip of Several Hypersonic Missile Configurations with Various Canard Controls

"An investigation of the aerodynamic characteristics of several hypersonic missile configurations with various canard controls for an angle-of-attack range from 0 deg to about 28 deg at sideslip angles of about 0 deg and 4 deg at a Mach number of 2.01 has been made in the Langley 4- by 4-foot supersonic pressure tunnel. The configurations tested were a body alone which had a ratio of length to diameter of 10, the body with a 10 deg flare, the body with cruciform fins of 5 deg or 15 deg apex angle, and a flare-stabilized rocket model with a modified Von Karman nose" (p. 1). Various canard surfaces for pitch control only were tested on the body with the 10 deg flare and on the body with both sets of fins. The results indicated that the addition of a flared afterbody or cruciform fins produced configurations which were longitudinally and directionally stable. The body with 5 deg fins should be capable of producing higher normal accelerations than the flared body. A l l of the canard surfaces were effective longitudinal controls which produced net positive increments of normal force and pitching moments which progressively decreased with increasing angle of attack.
