Neutral-beam systems for magnetic-fusion reactors (open access)

Neutral-beam systems for magnetic-fusion reactors

Neutral beams for magnetic fusion reactors are at an early stage of development, and require considerable effort to make them into the large, reliable, and efficient systems needed for future power plants. To optimize their performance to establish specific goals for component development, systematic analysis of the beamlines is essential. Three ion source characteristics are discussed: arc-cathode life, gas efficiency, and beam divergence, and their significance in a high-energy neutral-beam system is evaluated.

Development of forging and heat treating practices for AMS 5737 for use at liquid helium temperatures (open access)

Development of forging and heat treating practices for AMS 5737 for use at liquid helium temperatures

To achieve a combination of high yield-strength (sigma y), plane-strain fracture-toughness (K/sub IC/) and resistance to galling when turned against austenitic stainless steels in highly-loaded threaded turnbuckles in the M.F.T.F.-B (Mirror Fusion Test Facility), AMS 5737 (Fe-15Cr-25Ni-1Mo-V-Ti-Al-B), a heat-treatable Fe-base superalloy that is slightly-ferromagnetic under high magnetic fields at 4K, was chosen for large (approx. 340 kg) forged turn buckles. This report describes the forging and heat-treatment optimization program that resulted in good sigma y and K/sub IC/ over the 4 to 300K range of service-temperatures and the verification tests run on a pre-production forging and actual production parts.

Investigation of Sulfur-Tolerant Catalysts for Selective Synthesis of Hydrocarbon Liquids From Coal-Derived Gases. Quarterly Technical Progress Report, September 19-December 18, 1980 (open access)

Investigation of Sulfur-Tolerant Catalysts for Selective Synthesis of Hydrocarbon Liquids From Coal-Derived Gases. Quarterly Technical Progress Report, September 19-December 18, 1980

A 15% iron boride on SiO/sub 2/ catalyst was prepared using an alcohol solution reduction with NaBH/sub 4/. H/sub 2/ chemisorption measurements were performed for Fe-S-100 (3% Fe/SlO/sub 2/) and are in progress for the iron-boride-silica catalyst. Reduction of Co catalysts at 623 K rather than 723 K is being tested as a method to improve dispersion by decreasing the amount of Co-support interaction. An in depth study of non olefinic and nonparaffinic compound retention times on the 10% SP2100 chromotograph column has shown that the compounds elute in the following order for a specific carbon number: alkene < alkane < aldehyde < ketone < ester < alcohol < acid. Mass flow controllers have been installed in the reactor system and are fully operational.

Minimizing resputtering of Pt-coated microspheres in a batch magnetron sputtering process (open access)

Minimizing resputtering of Pt-coated microspheres in a batch magnetron sputtering process

Preventing DT loss from glass microspheres being smoothly coated with PT is needed during fabrication of laser fusion targets. Evidence indicates that the increase of substrate temperature due to resputtering will cause DT loss. Resputtering will prevent a smooth and uniform coating on these glass microspheres (140 ..mu..m in diameter). This paper reviews the method that was developed to find a set of coating conditions to minimize the DT loss, and still be able to produce thick smooth Pt coated glass microspheres.

Structural design considerations in the Mirror Fusion Test Facility (MFTF-B) vacuum vessel (open access)

Structural design considerations in the Mirror Fusion Test Facility (MFTF-B) vacuum vessel

In view of favorable results from the Tandem Mirror Experiment (TMX) also at LLNL, the MFTF project is now being rescoped into a large tandem mirror configuration (MFTF-B), which is the mainline approach to a mirror fusion reactor. This paper concerns itself with the structural aspects of the design of the vessel. The vessel and its intended functions are described. The major structural design issues, especially those influenced by the analysis, are described. The objectives of the finite element analysis and their realization are discussed at length.

Predictive calculations of volatilities of metals and oxides in steam-containing environments (open access)

Predictive calculations of volatilities of metals and oxides in steam-containing environments

Predictive methods are developed for estimating the bond energies and free energy functions of volatile species having the general formula MO/sub x/ (OH)/sub y/, in order to shed some light on the mechanisms and extent of steam accelerated volatilization processes. A specific example of applying the data is illustrated for the case of a proposed underground radioactive waste disposal process, where oxides of radionuclides are allowed to equilibrate with 100 atm steam and 10/sup -2/ atm oxygen at 1000 to 2000K. Vapor species found to have high volatilities include Cs/sub 2/(OH)/sub 2/, CsOH, AmO/sub 2/(OH)/sub 2/, AmO(OH)/sub 3/, UO/sub 2/(OH)/sub 2/, NbO(OH)/sub 3/, PuO/sub 2/(OH)/sub 2/, CeO(OH)/sub 2/, Ba(OH)/sub 2/, and Eu(OH)/sub 3/. Thermodynamic data are tabulated for all possible monomeric species for this specific example.
