[Pastoral French landscape etching and engraving]

Pastoral French etching and engraving of a landscape showing a small herd of cattle wadding through a stream that cuts through a hilly landscape with many trees. Two small figures appear conversing on the bank of the stream with a lone individual on a horse. The print is attributed to French designer and printmaker Adam Perelle and was published in Paris by Pierre Mariette.

Le tableau parlant: comédie-parade, en un acte et en vers

This is a 1773 printed copy of the libretto of "Le tableau parlant" (The talking picture), a one-act comic opera by M. Anseaume, set to music by Grétry. The opera was staged for the first time by the troupe of Italian actors of King Louis XV, on Wednesday, September 20, 1769. The back of the t.p. lists the names of the original actors who performed the characters of the opera at its premier: Isabelle (Madame Trial), [Jean-Louis Laruette] (Cassandre, Isabelle's tutor), [Madame Laruette (Colombine, Isabelle's lady-in-waiting), M. Trial (Léandre, Cassandra's nephew, who is in love with Isabelle), and [[Jean-Baptiste Clairval] (Léandre's valet). The final scene is a vaudeville sung by all of the characters. The music of the vaudeville is included at the end on pp. [45-48]. The library's copy of the libretto is bound with the libretto of Jean François Marmontel's comic opera "La fausse magie."

La fausse magie

This is a ca. [1775] printed copy of the libretto of "La fausse magie" (The false magic), a two-act comic opera by Jean François Marmontel, set to music by Grétry. [The opera was staged for the first time at the Théâtre Français à La Haye, on Thursday, November 30, 1775.] The final scene of act two contains the music of the couplets on pp. 47-48. The library's copy of the libretto is bound with the libretto of M. Anseaume's comic opera, "Le tableau parlant."

A female figure representing Marianne is accompanied by a wounded soldier. They collect for the Red Cross. Marianne is dressed in a style to suggest the French Revolution, wearing a blue, white, and red skirt, a uniform jacket worn as a cape, and a long blue and red cap. She holds a Red Cross collecting tin in one hand and a small blue, white, and red keg under her other arm. She guides a wounded soldier, his head bandaged. He has one arm on Marianne’s shoulder, and the other holds a cane. The soldier wears a medal pinned to his coat, a cap with an inscribed band, and is smoking.

Lauderdale paired with a possible back page of a booklet which reads in French "Moreau Éditeur Versailles" with an insignia of a line with floral decorations running through it.
