Impossible a la x

Access: Use of this item is restricted to the UNT Community
Recording of Joaquin Orellana Mejia's "Impossible a la x" ("Impossible to the X"). The piece raises the sonorous vision of a spiritual and violent situation, in which the primitive flows and their purity as a mimetic being and the "being children: are involved in clearly antithetical situations.

Balthasar's Traum

Access: Use of this item is restricted to the UNT Community
Recording of Frank Corcoran's "Balthasar's Traum" performed at the Electronic Studio of the Berlin Technical University in close cooperation with Folkmar Hein. The work is based on an idea of a short story by Jorge Luis Borge and the Gospel of St. Mark about Balthasar Espinosa, a man who becomes involved with the Gutres people of Pampa and eventually dies by being hanged on a cross by the same people with whom he was so fascinated. It takes place in the great plains of the Pampa where Baltasar Espinosa is invited to his friend's ranch. To escape the monotony of continuous rain, he begins every night to read aloud to the fascinated Gutres people. They ask for him to reread the Gospel of St. Mark. Mysterious things begin happening during the dark days -- Baltasar cures an animal through 20th century means, something the Gutres have never seen before. The rain eventually stops. That night a virgin Gutre girl visits Baltasar's bed. The next day, he reads the Gospel to the Gutres for the last time. They then ask Baltasar, who is not a believer, if even those who crucified the Savior can receive salvation. They ask for his blessing, …

Sensors IV

Access: Use of this item is restricted to the UNT Community
Recording of Alcides Lanza's Sensors IV performed in 1984 by the McGill Concert Choir, conducted by Christopher Reynolds. The tape was realized at the Composer's studio (SHELAN Studio) and McGill University EMS in Montreal, QC, Canada. The piece explores different techniques of vocal wiring, especially the relationship of semantics, languages, and memory. The word "Memory" constitutes the entire text for the piece - using letter sound, recombinations of the word, and adding syllables from other languages that share similar etymology. Recording of the word "memories" -- Meg Sheppard's voice -- is used in the realization of the piece.

Generation IV Nuclear Energy System Initiative. Pin Core Subassembly Design for the Gas-Cooled Fast Reactor. (open access)

Generation IV Nuclear Energy System Initiative. Pin Core Subassembly Design for the Gas-Cooled Fast Reactor.

This handbook demonstrates the application of a tool for measuring and monitoring the impact of a development project in the Department of Quezaltenango, Guatemala. That project itself presently is a demonstration. It explores the technical feasibility and the commercial possibilities of direct geothermal heat applications to the processing of agricultural produce - with the eventual purpose of expanding agricultural exports from Guatemala. The handbook focuses on an early stage of the geothermal initiative and guides preparations for future impact measurement and monitoring of geothermal projects. Primarily, guidance is for projects in agricultural applications of geothermal heat - and basically in Quezaltenango. But the exercise and the handbook are relevant in broad outline to other, industrial applications projects as well which may be based in other departments and have immediate impact across the whole country. This handbook attempts to prepare geothermal energy planners in Guatemala for that juncture when geothermal projects can be managed by objectives. It promotes and facilitates thinking about defining specific objectives for projects that result from the demonstration at Zunil (in Quezaltenango Department); and it prompts preparations for obtaining baseline measurements and for making rational projections on the achievements of future projects.

Reconnaissance evaluation of Honduran geothermal sites. Una evaluacion por medio de reconocimiento de seis areas geotermicas en Honduras (open access)

Reconnaissance evaluation of Honduran geothermal sites. Una evaluacion por medio de reconocimiento de seis areas geotermicas en Honduras

Six geothermal spring sites were selected on the basis of preliminary investigations conducted in Honduras over the last decade and were evaluated in terms of their development potential. Of the six, the Platanares and San Ignacio sites have high base temperatures and high surface fluid discharge rates and appear to have the best potential for further development as sources of electrical power. A third site, Azacualpa, has a high enough base temperature and discharge rate to be considered as a back-up, but the logistical problems involved in geophysical surveys make it less attractive than the two primary sites. Of the remaining three sites, Pavana may be a source of direct-use heat for local agricultural processing. Sambo Creek and El Olivar have either severe logistical problems that would impede further investigation and development or base temperatures and flow rates that are too low to warrant detailed investigation at this time.

Recommendations report for the platanares geothermal site, Department of Copan, Honduras. Reporte de recomendaciones para el sitio geotermico de platanares, Departamento de Copan, Honduras

A geothermal assessment of six previously identified sites in Honduras has been conducted by a team comprised of staff from the Los Alamos National Laboratory, the US Geological Survey, and the Empresa Nacional de Energia Electrica. The application of both reconnaissance and detailed scale techniques lead to the selection of Platanares in the Department of Copan as the highest potential site. Additional work resulted in the completion of a prefeasibility study at Platanares. We present here a tabulation of the work completed and short summaries of the results from these technical studies. We also present a brief model of the geothermal system and recommendations for additional feasibility work. Both English and Spanish versions of this report are provided in the same document. 18 figs., 5 tabs.

The well-logging operations performed in the Miravalles Geothermal Field in Costa Rica were conducted during two separate field trips. The Phase I program provided the deployment of a suite of high-temperature borehole instruments, including the temperature/rabbit, fluid sampler, and three-arm caliper in Well PGM-3. These same tools were deployed in Well PGM-10 along with an additional survey run with a combination fluid velocity/temperature/pressure instrument used to measure thermodynamic properties under flowing well conditions. The Phase II program complemented Phase I with the suite of tools deployed in Wells PGM-5, PGM-11, and PGM-12. 4 refs., 25 figs., 1 tab.

Perceptions of the Sudanese Professional Working in Saudi Arabia on Migration and Economic Development of the Sudan (open access)

Perceptions of the Sudanese Professional Working in Saudi Arabia on Migration and Economic Development of the Sudan

The brain drain emerged as a phenomenon in the Sudan in the early 1970's when a change in the political system was followed by a change in the economic situation. The oil price increases created a dynamic process that led to attractive employment conditions in the petroleum producing countries such as Saudi Arabia and to depressed economic conditions in the developing countries like the Sudan. The purposes of the study are to (a) obtain information on the Sudanese professionals working in Saudi Arabia, (b) determine what major factors influence their migration, and (c) to develop policy recommendations on the flow of migration from the Sudan. The population of this study were Sudanese professionals living in Saudi Arabia. Data were generated through surveying a sample of 300 subjects selected randomly from the defined population. A survey questionnaire based on the research questions was developed for this study. Data from 263 respondents were analyzed. The findings of the study suggest that the majority of the Sudanese professionals working in Saudi Arabia are male, between 30 to 40 years of age. They have many years of experience and a high level of qualifications. The factors that led to their migration are: (a) high …

Perceptions of Managers in Kuwait on the Role of the Multinational Corporations in Change in Kuwait (open access)

Perceptions of Managers in Kuwait on the Role of the Multinational Corporations in Change in Kuwait

The purpose of this study is to investigate the perceptions of managers in Kuwait (both Kuwaiti and non- Kuwaiti) on the effects of multinational corporations (MNCs) in Kuwait and whether these effects were beneficial. The problem motivating this study is the effects that MNCs have on the social, cultural, political, legal, economic, business, and technological environments of their host countries, especially in developing nations. This study is based on a survey of the perceptions of 1,344 managers in Kuwait on the role of MNCs in changes in Kuwait. A review of the literature on MNCs and their relationships with their host countries is provided. This review focuses on four major environmental dimensions (Social-Cultural, Political-Legal, Business-Economic, and Technological) that are affected by MNCs. The factor analysis performed for this study supports this classification of the dimensions in the environment. An English questionnaire was developed from the list of major items in each of these dimensions. An Arabic version was developed using a "double-translation method." Both the English and Arabic versions of the questionnaire were pilot tested. The instrument proved to be reliable and valid. The study utilizes a 2 x 3 block design, categorizing subjects by nationality (Kuwaiti, other Arab, others) …

Personal Value Systems of American and Jordanian Managers: A Cross-Cultural Study (open access)

Personal Value Systems of American and Jordanian Managers: A Cross-Cultural Study

The objectives of this study are: (1) to explore the personal value systems of Jordanian managers; (2) to examine the relationship between the personal values of Jordanian managers and their behavior (i.e., decision making); and (3) to compare the personal value systems of Jordanian and American managers. To achieve the first and the second objectives, England's (1967) Personal Value Questionnaire (PVQ) and the Behavioral Measurement Questionnaire have been respectively utilized. To achieve the final objective, the behavioral relevance scores derived from this study are compared with those in England's (1975) study. Finally, demographic and organizational data are used to describe the characteristics of Jordanian managers and serve as covariates in the statistical analysis. In reference to the statistical techniques, England's scoring methodology, factor analysis and multiple regression, are used to determine the relationship between the personal value systems of Jordanian managers and their behavior (i.e., decisionmaking). England's (1975) "rule of thumb" (adjusted to 15 percent difference) and the Chisguare test are used to test the significant differences between the personal value systems of the Jordanian and American respondents. The findings of this study are as follows: 1. The primary value orientation of Jordanian managers responding to this study is moralistic …
