In the Standard Model (SM) of the elementary particles, the interactions among the known fundamental fermions (leptons and quarks) are mediated through gauge bosons which obey the symmetry: SU(3) {circle_times} SU(2) {circle_times} U(1). More precisely, the electroweak interaction [4-6] is described by a gauge symmetry SU(2) {circle_times} U(1) which is broken spontaneously. The electroweak symmetry breaking is implemented by the introduction of a complex scalar Higgs field which has a non-zero vacuum expectation value (vev). This way, the lagrangian of the theory remains invariant under SU(2) transformations, but quantization of the fields must start from a ground state which does not exhibit this symmetry, and therefore the full symmetry of the lagrangian is not manifest. Invariance of the theory under local SU(2) transformations implies the presence of vectorial gauge fields which mediate the electroweak interactions. The so called spontaneous symmetry breaking allows the quanta of these gauge fields, the W and Z bosons, to acquire a finite mass. The photon, the particle which mediates the electromagnetic interaction, remains massless. The largest volume waste stream associated with oil and gas production is produced water. A survey conducted by the American Petroleum Institute estimated that 20.9 billion barrels of produced water were disposed of in 1985 (Wakim 1987). Of this total, 91% was disposed of through disposal wells or was injected for enhanced oil recovery projects. Treatment and disposal of produced water represents a significant cost for operators. A relatively new technology, downhole oil/water separators (DOWS), has been developed to reduce the cost of handling produced water. DOWS separate oil and gas from produced water at the bottom of the well and reinject some of the produced water into another formation or another horizon within the same formation, while the oil and gas are pumped to the surface. Since much of the produced water is not pumped to the surface, treated, and pumped from the surface back into a deep formation, the cost of handling produced water is greatly reduced. When DOWS are used, additional oil may be recovered as well. In cases where surface processing or disposal capacity is a limiting factor for further production within a field, the use of DOWS to dispose of some of the produced water …

Recording of Pekka Sirén and Agnieszka Waligórska's Chimera in Kosovo. This work represents the suffering of Kosovo refugees during wartime and utilizes radio mediums to further give the impression of the horrors and fears experienced by the victims. The piece uses radio voices and imaginary female cries as well as looped international newscaster voices.

Recording of Miguel Azguime's Comunicacones. The sound materials in this piece come from concrete sounds from a Lisbon port, communication satellites, and texts in more than 30 different languages, as well as synthetic and instrumental sounds. This work was commissioned by the Lisbon World Fair Expo'98 and the concert version premiered at the "Musica em Novembro" festival in Lisbon.

Recording of Federico Schumacher Ratti's Palabras del sur. This work was composed in response to the call for an open work "Le monde devenu Musique l'écoute du siècle". The sound materials in this piece come from instrumentals and vocals from the Kaweskar and Yamana indigenous groups as well as the Mapuche ethnic group and sheds a light on the perspective from the south.

Recording of Henri Heuze's Souvenirs linguistiques II. This work is an homage to the Picard language and culture, which has been slowly disappearing. It includes samples of a woman and her son speaking the language as they both come from Picardy, a region in Northern France.

This piece is segmented into 9 parts by the composer: 1. just before, 2. micado of mammoths, 3. speech of birds, 4. celestial threats, 5. song 1, 6. up and down, 7. song 2: "How many times it sings...", 8. emotions, 9. trio. It's comprised of background noise, violin, voices of the composer's friends, etc. The piece seems to be a collection of sounds that the composer relates to his personal life and day to day.

Recording of Richard Loiselle's Toundra. This work is an homage to the Inuit, a Northern Canadian indigenous group, and the hardships that come with living in the tundra. The composer uses recordings of the Inuit's specialized throat-singing called "katajjait" throughout the work.
