[A Matter of Time]

Photographs of the 2017-2018 artist's book competition winner "A Matter of Time" created by Samuel C. Cowan. Media: Leather, etched copper, screen print and watercolor on paper. A Matter of Time is the study of the effects of light and time on space. It is a celebration of repetition through subtle, predictable change. The first image is a triangular book, the middle of it a light brown triangle with subtle lines that make it resemble an eye. Image 2, the triangular book is opened up to show several panels in an accordion-like manner, containing illustrations of a house with bare trees by it and bright blue sky. The house is the same, but the shadow on it varies. Image 3, a closeup of three of the book panels, the houses on the illustration go from big shadow to small shadow from left to right.

[Microscopic Book]

Photographs of the 2019-2020 artist's book competition honorable mention "Microscopic Book" created by Todd Rychener. Media: alcohol ink, acetate, fabric, paper. Designed to not have an obvious front or back, Microscopic Book can be read left to right starting at either cover. The intention is to bring to mind: biology class microscope slides, 35mm film slides, kaleidoscopes, fossilized amber, gemstones, or underwater sunlight. The first image is of the grey book seen from the top, the cover of the page has a magnifying glass in the middle. The pages are different colors. Image 2, the clear pages of the book are opened up, the frames different colors. Image 3, the front and back of the grey book are seen with the magnifying glasses on the front and back. The front and back are tied together by light blue string. Through the clear part of the book colorful swirls can be seen.

[36th National Guard Private's wool jacket, , World War I]

Photographs of 36th National Guard Private's wool jacket from World War I, held by UNT Special Collections. This jacket was worn by George N. Rucker who was stationed at Camp Travis in San Antonio, Texas, during World War I. The first image shows an arrowhead patch with the "T" in the center represents the 36th infantry division of the Texas Army National Guard, which was made up of Texans and Oklahomans. The silver chevron patch lower on the sleeve represents stateside service of at least six months. A second silver chevron patch would have been added for an additional six months served, so we can tell that Rucker only served between six and eleven months. The red chevron near the shoulder represents honorable discharge. Image 2, front of wool jacket with two pockets on the top and bottom of each side and five buttons along the middle.

[20 Soldiers a Day]

Photographs of the 2009-2010 artist's book competition winner "20 Soldiers a Day" created by Jung Eun Lee (or Jungeun Lee). The artist's book is a Japanese-sewn volume consisting of double-leaves sewn together. The recto of each leaf has a changing pattern of stains and marks, and the verso of each leaf has text from the inner surface becoming more and more visible as the reader moves through the volume. The next-to-last leaf has complete text, the testimony of a young Korean girl who was forced into sexual slavery at a comfort station for Japanese military personnel in Taiwan during World War II. The volume is tied closed with triple-strand white string and is wrapped in a stained square of white cloth that is tied with twine. The first image of is the cloth bundle up and tied together by the twine. Image 2, opened up cloth book. The left side has few stains, and the right side some black marks with string sticking out at the top. Image 3, closeup of a cloth page with black marks across the middle of it. Image 4, A closed bound book laying atop a white cloth, a stain on its spine.
