Many of the bridges are considered by construction men to be minor engineering marvels themselves although they tend to be minor to be overlooked when conversation compares the entire Arkansas development with pryamids. The federal government spent $37.2 million to replace old, low bridges with new ones which would provide 52 feet of headroom for river traffic. Eight of the bridges are on the Oklahoma portion of the Arkansas and eight are on the Verdigris River. One - the Kansas City & Southern Railroad bridge near Redland - is unique in the U. S. Welded box grider structures like it have been built in Europe, engineers say, but no one before tried ot here. Built out from both banks and joined at the center, it was hoisted into place. In mid-March, the old KC&S bridge is to be removed, and boats then will also have 300 feet between bridge piers in which to maneuver. Near Wagoner the STate Route 51 bridge was raised 30 feet from its original level. …
