Until then, the highway will be one of the biggest patchworks on an interstate route in the country. I. H. 40 roughly follows U.S. 66 from Texola, on the Texas line, to Oklahoma City. on east, it will be south of and paralled to U.S. 62 to Henryetta, then south of and parallel to U.S. 266 and U.S. 64 to a point near Fort Smith, Ark. When completed in 1972, I H. 40 will total 330 miles and will have cost more than $208 million. Just how much more is anybody's guess. Within six months, the western leg - U .S. 66 - will be four laned from Texola to the U.S. Reformatory at El Reno, including stretches through Weatherford, Clinton, Elk City, Canute, Sayre, Erick and Texola.........Widening of U. S. 66 to four lanes was started from Texola in 1955, before the interstate system was created by the federal government. Using old U. S. 66 - jammed up against the Rock Island tracks - as the north lane, …
