Built in three months in 1942, the naval air technical training center originally cost $12 millions. But when it was given to the University of Oklahoma in July, 1946, the value was set at $25 millions. Three Oklahoma City construction companies merged into one to handle the $21 millions job of building the NATTC plus the naval air station (north base), a big navy hospital at Norman, and the gunnery school at Purcell. There were 52 subcontracting companies working on the project. Peak empoyment on the south base was 9,000. Average was 4,000. The first 60 trainees started school on the south base Sept. 1, 1942......Placed side by side, two stories from the Daily Oklahoman seperated by 20 months in time tell an ironic story.
