The fire broke out about 7:40 a.m. Thursday in the second story of the Flake convalescent home for handicapped children and was battled by firemen from Warr Acres, Bethany and Oklahoma City before being brought under control about an hour later. Firemen, policemen and volunteers from Bethany Nazarene college worked in 30-degree temperatures to rescue the children....Mrs. Mary Flake and her sister, Mrs. Harvie Prince, operators of the privately-financed home, rescued a number of children as the fire raged through the second story of the house.Mrs. Flake was severely burned about the head and face and Mrs. Prince suffered severe shock. One of the first victims identified was a 5-year-old girl, Mary Elizabeth Butler, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harrell Butler, 1140 Nw 33. Others Identified Firemen tentatively identified the other victims, without ages as Jerry Norsworthy, Mary F. Pratt, Lee Wilhelm and Mike Engler.
