A Phosphonic Functionalized Biopolymer for the Sorption of Lanthanum (III) and Application in the Recovery of Rare Earth Elements

Authors of the article state that in the first step of their experiment, the sorption was investigated using La(III) ions before testing for the recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) from pretreated industrial acidic leachate. They infer that phosphonate groups participate in the sorption, and that the most effective sorption is at pH = 4.

Photophysical Interactions in Vapor Synthesized and Mechanically Exfoliated Two-Dimensional Conducting Crystallites for Quantum and Optical Sensing

In the first study, superconducting 2D NbSe₂ was examined towards its prototypical demonstration as a transition-edge sensor, where photoexcitation caused a thermodynamic phase transition in NbSe₂ from the superconducting state to the normal state. The efficacy of the optical absorption was found to depend on the wavelength of the incoming radiation used, which ranged from the ultra-violet (405 nm), visible (660 nm), to the infrared (1060 nm). In the second case involving WSe₂, the UV-ozone treatment revealed the presence of localized excitonic emission in 1L WSe₂ that was robust and long-lived. Our third material platform dealt with hybrid 0D-2D ensembles based on graphene and WSe₂, specifically graphene–endohedral, WSe₂–fullerene (C₆₀), and WSe₂–Au nanoparticles, and exhibited exceptional performance gains achieved with both types of hybrid structures. Next, we investigated WSe₂ based mixed dimensional hybrids. Temperature T-dependent and wavelength λ-dependent optoelectronic transport measurements showed a shift in the spectral response of 1L WSe₂ towards the SPR peak locations of Au-Sp and Au-BP, fostered through the plexciton interactions. Models for the plexcitonic interactions are proposed that provide a framework for explaining the photoexcited hot charge carrier injection from AuNPs to WSe₂ and its influence on the carrier dynamics in these hybrid systems. Last, we …

Photophysical Properties of Binuclear and Trinuclear Monovalent Coinage Metal Complexes for Applications in Molecular Devices

Monovalent coinage metal complexes have been of significant interest due to their rich photophysical properties. This dissertation focuses on the design, synthesis, and characterization of gold, silver, and copper phosphors. Chapter 2 investigates new physical and photophysical properties of a gold diphosphine dimer in the solid state. Thermally activated luminescence switching between two structural states is discussed. Chapter 3 includes the photochemistry of closed shell group 11 transition metals with dithiophosphonate and diphosphine ligands as heteroleptic, homoleptic and heterometallic systems. Chapter 4 reports the synthesis and characterization of a cyclic trinuclear gold imidazolate complex with high electron dentistry and π- base properties. The trinuclear gold (I) complexes reactivity with silver(I) and sodium cations is explored. The photochemistry of all complexes are screened for efficiency, emission profiles and lifetimes as potential materials to be used in OLEDs and other molecular devices.

Physics Academic Program Review (open access)

Physics Academic Program Review

This report summarizes an evaluation of the UNT Libraries' Physics-related resources and materials to determine if the collection is adequately serving patron needs. It was generated as part of the UNT Libraries’ contributions to the university’s Academic Program Reviews, which are conducted by the Accreditation office in the Division of Planning. The UNT Libraries’ Collection Assessment Department evaluated collections’ ability to meet the curricular and research needs of the academic programs being reviewed. They assessed current needs based on course descriptions and research outputs, defined the scope of information needed based on this needs assessment, and evaluated the Libraries’ holdings in these subject areas against the usage, qualitative listings, and requests for materials from other libraries. Specific recommendations for collection development are provided based on the results of these analyses.

Piano Concerto No. 1 In E Minor, by Emil Sauer: A Stylistic and Historical Argument for Its Relevance to the Piano Literature (open access)

Piano Concerto No. 1 In E Minor, by Emil Sauer: A Stylistic and Historical Argument for Its Relevance to the Piano Literature

In 1895, Emil Georg Conrad Sauer (1862-1942), a world-renowned German pianist and former student of Franz Liszt wrote his first piano concerto, which was published five years later in 1900. Sauer performed it extensively to enthusiastic crowds in Europe and the United States while on tour during the next several years. Then it vanished from the concert repertoire. It is no longer performed and has only been commercially recorded once. The purpose of this dissertation is to establish why it might have disappeared, and why there is value in bringing it back to the standard piano repertoire.

The PICTS, Trauma, Experiential Avoidance, Criminal Thinking and Behavior in an Online Community Sample (open access)

The PICTS, Trauma, Experiential Avoidance, Criminal Thinking and Behavior in an Online Community Sample

This study sought to generalize the Psychological Inventory of Criminal Thinking Styles (PICTS) factor structure using the PICTS-Layperson (PICTS:L) in a community sample. The current study also sought to replicate previous findings that criminal thinking mediates the relationship between trauma and criminal behavior. Additionally, this study sought to explore if and/or how experiential avoidance (EA) contributes to the relationships between post-traumatic symptoms (PTS) and criminal thinking, and criminal thinking and criminal behavior. Community members recruited through Mturk, completed online measures of PTS, EA, criminal thinking, criminal behavior, and a demographics questionnaire. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), which was conducted to assess the PICTS:L factor structure in an online community sample, demonstrated the hierarchical second order factor structure was a good fit after problem items were removed. Mediation analyses results found that criminal thinking mediated the relationship between PTS and criminal behavior therefore replicating previous findings. Moderated mediation analyses were conducted to determine if EA moderates the relationships between PTS and criminal thinking, and criminal thinking and behavior. Findings suggest that EA plays a significant role, particularly for women who endorse relatively low EA. These and exploratory findings, limitations, implications, and future directions for work in these areas are discussed.
