Air Corridors: Concept, Design, Simulation, and Rules of Engagement

Article presenting fundamental insights into the design of air corridors with high operational efficiency as well as zero collisions. It begins with the definitions of air cube, skylane or track, intersection, vertiport, gate, and air corridor. Then a multi-layered air corridor model is proposed. Traffic at intersections is analyzed in detail with examples of vehicles turning in different directions. The concept of capacity of an air corridor is introduced along with the nature of distribution of locations of vehicles in the air corridor and collision probability inside the corridor are discussed. Finally, results of traffic flow simulations are presented.

Anti-racist Pedagogy in Art Education: K-12/Higher Education

Video recording featuring co-hosts Lauren Cross, Ph.D., and Kathy Brown, Ph.D., engage in ongoing conversations about anti-racist pedagogy in the arts and design. Joined by distinguished guest panelists, Joni Boyd Acuff, Ph.D., and James Haywood Rolling Jr., Ed.D., this first installment of the 2044 series introduces Afrofuturism and the ways that it can help reimagine art discourses, laying the groundwork for establishing Afrofuturism as a framework for conceptualizing and enacting anti-racist art education practice. In addition to sharing their work and how it relates to Afrofuturism and futurist thinking, the panelists discuss how recognizing Black and Brown artists and advocating for racial literacy is essential to creating and maintaining a racial consciousness practice in K-12 education.

Anti-racist Praxis at Futurist Art and Design Pedagogy

Video recording featuring esteemed guest panelists, Tameka Ellington, Ph.D., Cheryl D. Holmes Miller, and Terresa Moses, M.F.A., this second installment of the 2044 series highlights the ways that working against anti-Blackness through the lens of Afrofuturism and Critical Race Theory allows for the examination and enactment of decolonizing design bias and white default. This session brings questions of Black agency, stereotyping, bias, representation, appropriation, commodification, and the dangers of pathologizing Blackness in design. Panelists discuss anti-racist practice in design education through forms of resistance and resilience.

[Campus outdoor memorial for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women]

Photograph of a pathway with benches in between the Union lawn and the Library Mall. Medium size trees and the benches next to them are lined next to the pathway and spaced out by a few yards. A red ruffled short sleeve lace dress is hanging on each of the trees. A small white sign near the first bench reads "Remember the fallen" in Sharpie. The G. Brint Ryan Business Leadership Building is visible at the end of the path on the other side of Highland Street. Larger oak trees are also visible up on the top of the hill closer to the Library Mall.

A Comprehensive Approach to Addressing Gender Equity in STEM Subjects at Four-Year Universities in England (open access)

A Comprehensive Approach to Addressing Gender Equity in STEM Subjects at Four-Year Universities in England

This chapter explores gender disparities in enrollment and persistence in STEM undergraduate education in England. The authors examine the difference in early educational achievement in mathematics and science subjects and students’ plan to study STEM subjects by gender. They also examine women’s odds of studying STEM subjects in England after controlling for academic performance and social class characteristics. The authors also particularly test gendered differences in studying STEM at prestigious Russell Group universities. Finally, the authors highlight factors that policy makers, researchers, instructors, and STEM workforce members should consider to close gender gaps in STEM undergraduate education.

Discovery of higher-order topological insulators using the spin Hall conductivity as a topology signature

This article shows a connection between spin Hall effect and HOTIs using a combination of ab initio calculations and tight-binding modeling. The model demonstrates how a non-zero bulk midgap spin Hall conductivity (SHC) emerges within the HOTI phase. This work guides novel experimental and theoretical advances towards higher-order topological insulator realization and applications.
