Analysis of Knowledge Risks Identified in the Brazilian Space Program: A Methodological Framework for Verification and Mitigation of Risks in the Light of Knowledge Governance

Brazilian scientific and technological research in the space area covers a diversity of themes so that its results are applied in several areas, such as earth observation, fire control, climate change, telecommunications, and security, among others. By providing useful products and services for society, economy, and industry, one perceives its relevance and the need to improve Brazil's space research. Thus, given its social and economic importance, this project aims to structure, based on scientific and situated knowledge, a framework that could help to mitigate the knowledge risks identified in the diverse types of organizations and sectors that are part of the Brazilian Space Program. This work in progress will try to address this problem by providing a methodological framework based on Knowledge Governance tools and it is intended to homogenize and mitigate the knowledge risks identified in the diverse types of organizations that are part of the Brazilian Space sector. The methodological approach to be used in the research will be predominantly qualitative, with possible quantitative treatment when analyzing the collected data used to develop the framework. This paper identify, analyze and catalogue, based on the distinct categories found in the literature, the types of knowledge risks observed in organizations …

…And Still I Wander South (open access)

…And Still I Wander South

In my work, I explore the ancient occult concept of the egregore or collective thought-form and its continued relevance in contemporary life. One might not think of the systems that we operate in today as ritual in nature, especially those that utilize new technology. We may imagine cyberspace as the ultimate rational and objective realm where all things can be categorized, quantified, and monetized. However, it is a place saturated with ceremonial situations upon close inspection. I seek out these ceremonies of niche digital communities and reconstruct them in new forms operating adjacent to their original stream.

…and the Light was Blue

My background in fashion relied on the use of sewing machines as tools to create garments made of new materials. My current artmaking has evolved away from the body and functionality to become relief sculptures in cloth. This work is the embodiment of moments in time and space that have stopped me mid-stride, compelling me to closely examine the details. As a fine artist, I translate these observations of nature into my art by using a needle and thread to hand stitch on reclaimed cloth. I invite the viewers to pause, wonder, and think about their place in the world.

Application of Big Data Analytics in Precision Medicine: Lesson for Ethiopia (open access)

Application of Big Data Analytics in Precision Medicine: Lesson for Ethiopia

Precision medicine is an emerging approach for disease treatment and prevention that considers individual variability in genes, environment, and lifestyle for each person. Big data analytics (BDA) using cutting-edge technologies helps to design models that can diagnose, treat and predict diseases. In Ethiopia, healthcare service delivery faces many challenges specifically in relation to prescribing the right medicine to the right patient at the right time. Thus, patients face challenges ranging from staying on treatment plans longer, and then leaving treatment, and finally dying of complications. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to explore the trends, challenges, and opportunities of applying BDA in precision medicine globally and take lessons for Ethiopia through a systematic literature review of 19 peer reviewed articles from five databases. The findings indicated that cancer in general, epilepsy, and systemic diseases altogether are areas currently getting big attention. The challenges are attributed to the nature of health data, failure in collaboration for data sharing, ethical and legal issues, interoperability of systems, poor knowledge skills and culture, and poor infrastructure. Development of modern technologies, experimental technologies and methods, cloud computing, Internet of Things, social networks and Ethiopia’s government initiative to promote private technological firms could be an …

Approximation Theory and Complex Dynamics (open access)

Approximation Theory and Complex Dynamics

Data management plan for the grant, "Approximation Theory and Complex Dynamics." This project involves the study of approximation theory in the setting of complex functions, with applications to complex dynamics. Approximation theory seeks to understand the extent to which the behavior of a general function can be effectively modeled by that of functions drawn from a more restricted class. Efficient approximation of functions is of relevance for numerical calculation. Since the only calculations that can be carried out numerically are the elementary operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, in practical terms it is of importance to understand when the values of general functions are well approximated by the values of either polynomial or rational functions. In many situations, the values of the approximant resemble those of the general function only for a sampling of input values. What can be said about values of the approximant for other choices of input? This is the main question studied in this project, with the following application in mind: when a general function is iterated to produce a dynamical system, to what extent does the dynamical behavior of an approximant resemble the dynamical behavior of the original function? The project will also contribute …

Are We Missing the Importance of Creativity in Knowledge Management?

Creativity is no stranger to knowledge management and has helped drive innovation and break new grounds in the management of knowledge. Organisations in general see creativity as a highly desirable outcome and strive to develop it further. This conceptual paper looks at a number of academic writings to identify the role of creativity in knowledge management. A number of common themes are identified, while highlighting the need for further research into the importance of creativity in knowledge management.

Bellows of the Beast

My artwork uses the traditions of printmaking, photography, and fiber arts to dissect the myths, history, and current moment of American culture. My methodology includes photographing sites where governmental and capital power is most present. Photography is my tool for documenting the present, while quilting and printmaking are my way of reflecting on and digesting ideological concepts that are present in our culture. The quilt is a symbol of comfort in our personal ideologies. My work aims to destigmatize direct action and encourages the viewer to reevaluate how meaningful change can be made today.
