The writer's purpose in this study has been to make a thorough investigation of the Newbery Medal books to determine if they represent the best literature suitable for children's reading that has been published since 1922, and to investigate carefully the group as a whole to see if the books possess those rare qualities and characteristics which, deservedly, would set them apart from the ordinary type of books usually designated as suitable for children's reading.

This thesis describes the procedures used in preparation of the derivatives of certain alkyl phenylacetates and the necessary intermediate compounds. Compounds resembling the structure of Benadryl were prepared in this study in the hope that at least one might prove to be of value in the fight against allergy.

An Integrated Guidance Program for Small Secondary Schools in Texas
Of the 1190 four-year high schools of Texas there are 941 with an enrollment of 250 or less. This group of schools is missing many opportunities to guide the youth they graduate into effective and wholesome living by means of an integrated guidance program. It is the purpose of this study to develop a program which, if incorporated into the curricula of these schools, should result in an integration of guidance into the many phases of the school's activities and increase the school's usefulness to the student.

The work encompassed by this thesis is partially a reproduction of the results obtained by John A. Marcia in his work on the photo-chemical reactions of branched hydrocarbons. The previous work done on this particular problem was rendered partially valueless because of the loss of the liquid hydrocarbon product when a fractionation column at the Texas Company Laboratory, Beacon, New York, broke during the fractionation run.
