Xenon and Samarium Poisoning (open access)

Xenon and Samarium Poisoning

The equilibrium and maximum override values for xenon and samarium poisoning have been computed using the recently issued effective cross sections of C. H. Westcott. Values are given as a function of specific power, neutron temperature, and epithermal flux content.

Xenon Concentration Changes in Brain and Other Body Tissues of the Dog During Inhalation of the Gas (open access)

Xenon Concentration Changes in Brain and Other Body Tissues of the Dog During Inhalation of the Gas

A study has been made of xenon concentration changes in brain and other body tissues of the dog during inhalation of radioactive xenon. The xenon concentrations of the thalamus, hypothalamus, caudate nucleus and medulla oblongata were similar and significantly higher than those of the cerebral parietal cortex at the two and six minute periods of inhalation. Whereas four of the five brain tissues studied were saturated within about six minutes, the cerebral parietal cortex may not be completely saturated even after a twenty minute period of inhalation of xenon at a constant tension. The xenon concentration of adrenal gland tissue rises rapidly and exceeds that of the brain tissues after about a ten minute period of inhalation. Kidney, liver and striated muscle absorb xenon more slowly than the other tissues studied.

Xenon-Tagging in Production of EBR-II Mark II Driven-Fuel Elements (open access)

Xenon-Tagging in Production of EBR-II Mark II Driven-Fuel Elements

About 1200 Mark II driver-fuel elements were xenon-tagged to facilitate qualification for irradiation of Mark II fuel manufactured at ANL-West. Tagging equipment was designed and developed. In this equipment, the plenum in a fuel-element jacket was evacuated then filled with xenon to a predetermined pressure. The equipment design allows tagging and element fabrication to proceed normal rates for production of fuel elements. A Kr-85 tracer in the xenon-tag gas verified by gamma counting the adequate tagging of each element.

XLIBIT: ANL Cross-section Library Code

From Introduction: "With the acquisition by the Laboratory of a Control Data 3600 computer in the fall of 1963, a joint reprogramming project was undertaken by the Laboratory's Applied Mathematics Division and the Control Data Corporation to develop one - and two-dimensional diffusion-theory and Sn transport-theory programs for the CDC-3600. The XLIBIT code described in this report was developed as a part of this project. XLIBIT is a CDC-3600 program designed to: 1) Prepare a cross-section library tape. 2) Modify an existing cross-section library tape. 3) Duplicate an existing cross-section library tape. 4) Print all or a portion of the cross-section data on the library tape. Punch cross-section decks for all or a portion of the data on the library tape. The decks produced are identical to those used in pertaining the tape."

The Y-Nd and Sc-Nd Phase Systems (open access)

The Y-Nd and Sc-Nd Phase Systems

Technical report. From Introduction : "In a recent study by Spedding, et al. on some rare earth alloy systems, an intermediate phase was found to form when a light rare earth (ABAC stacking) was alloyed with a heavy rare earth (ABAC stacking). This intermediate phase was found to have the structure of samarium metal with the stacking ABABCBCAC and was designated "delta". Since the cause of this rather unusual structure occurring in either samarium metal or these alloys is not known the study of these phases as some of their properties is continuing in the Ames Laboratory. It was the purpose of the present study to extend our knowledge of the composition and more of formation of these phases."

Yankee Core Evaluation Program Quarterly Progress Report: July-September 1963

From introduction: The potential of this study as a basis for the evaluation of reactor core design methods is very great. It represents the first opportunity of its kind in relation to the design of low enriched, uranium fueled, light water moderated reactors. Sufficient information should be available to obtain a good fit between the experimental results and a combination of basic physical data and computer programs. The degree of accuracy of this fit will be evaluated. This information will permit a realistic estimate of the uncertainty in future design studies attributable to inherent deficiencies in the design computational methods. In addition, a detailed study of the results undoubtedly will permit improvements in the analytical model. As a final consequence, many ambiguities in reactor economics, due to uncertainties in power capability as a function of time and in the conversion ratio, should be eliminated.

Yaw Characteristics and Sidewash Angles of a 42 Degree Sweptback Circular-Arc Wing With a Fuselage and With Leading-Edge and Split Flaps at a Reynolds Number of 5,300,000

Report presenting testing of the low-speed aerodynamic characteristics in yaw of a 42 degree sweptback wing of circular-arc airfoil sections in the pressure tunnel. The wing had an aspect ratio of 3.94, taper ratio of 0.625, and no dihedral or twist. Results regarding lateral-stability parameters of plain wing, effect of wing flaps on lateral-stability parameters, effect of fuselage on lateral-stability parameters, a comparison with the NACA 64(sub 1)-112 wing, characteristics in the extended yaw range, and airflow characteristics in the region of a vertical tail are provided.
