The 6-Foot-4-Inch Wind Tunnel at the Washington Navy Yard (open access)

The 6-Foot-4-Inch Wind Tunnel at the Washington Navy Yard

Report discussing the 6-foot-4-inch wind tunnel and its auxiliary equipment has proven itself capable of continuous and reliable output of data. The real value of the tunnel will increase as experience is gained in checking the observed tunnel performance against full-scale performance. Such has been the case of the 8- by 8-foot tunnel, and for that reason the comparison in the calibration tests have been presented.

709 Program for Reduction of Exponential Pile Data (open access)

709 Program for Reduction of Exponential Pile Data

A multi-purpose program for processing exponential data has been prepared for the 709 computer. The main purposes of the program is to compute the material buckling from raw data (given counts, time, and counter information) or from previously calculated Athermal's. It is also possible to compute only CeCh (end and harmonic corrections) for a given B11 or series if B11's no counting data being entered. In every case, pile measurements must be submitted as input for corrections.

Acceleration of high-pressure-ratio single-spool turbojet engine as determined from component performance characteristics 3: effect of turbine stator adjustment

From Summary: "An analytical investigation was made to determine from component performance the effect of turbine stator adjustment on the acceleration characteristics of a typical high-pressure-ratio single-spool turbojet engine. Turbine stator adjustment was adequate to permit engine operation in the intermediate-speed range, but was less satisfactory than the relatively simple schemes of compressor-interstage and -outlet bleed."

Accelerations and passenger harness loads measured in full-scale light-airplane crashes

From Introduction: "Light-airplane accident data, compiled by Crash Injury Research of Cornell University Medical College, indicate that human beings have often withstood declarations in excess of those imposed in airplane crashes involving extensive damage to the airplane structure (ref. 1). This study also correlates the extent of damage to the airplane structure with the injury incurred by the occupants during crash accidents."

Accuracy of Approximate Methods for Predicting Pressures on Pointed Nonlifting Bodies of Revolution in Supersonic Flow (open access)

Accuracy of Approximate Methods for Predicting Pressures on Pointed Nonlifting Bodies of Revolution in Supersonic Flow

Note presenting an investigation of the accuracy and range of applicability of the linearized theory, second-order theory, tangent-cone method, conical-shock-expansion theory, and Newtonian theory for predicting pressure distributions on pointed bodies of revolution at zero angle of attack. Three shapes, cone, ogive, and a modified optimum body, are investigated over a wide range of fineness ratios and Mach numbers. The results indicated that for most combinations of fineness ratio and Mach number, one of the approximate methods will give reasonable results.

Acid-Base Equilibria in Tertiary Butyl Alcohol (open access)

Acid-Base Equilibria in Tertiary Butyl Alcohol

From abstract: "The dissociation of acids in tertiary butyl alcohol has been studied by potentiometric, spectrophotometric, and conductimetric methods. Values for the over-all dissociation of perchloric and picric acids and several tetrabutylammonium salts were estimated by the Fuoss-Kraus treatment of conductance data. Potentiometric studies were carried out at constant ionic strength in order to minimize activity coefficient variations. An acidity scale was established from potentiometric measurements at a glass electrode, and conductance values of dissociation constants. A method was developed for the evaluation of the over-all dissociation constant of weak acids using potentiometric data for hydrogen ion activities and conductance data for the corresponding anion activities. Over-all dissociation constants are reported for perchloric acid, picric acid, 2,4-dinitrophenol, and benzoic acid. Apparent dissociation constants from potentiometric measurements at a constant ionic strength were determined for hydrobromic, nitric, hydrochloric, picric, and p-toluenesulfonic acids."

Actinide Recovery Using Aqueous Biphasic Extraction: Initial Developmental Studies (open access)

Actinide Recovery Using Aqueous Biphasic Extraction: Initial Developmental Studies

Aqueous biphasic extraction systems are being developed to treat radioactive wastes. The separation technique involves the selective partitioning of either solutes or colloid-size particles between two scible aqueous phases. Wet grinding of plutonium residues to an average particle size of one micron will be used to liberate the plutonium from the bulk of the particle matrix. The goal is to produce a plutonium concentrate that will integrate with existing and developing chemical recovery processes. Ideally, the process would produce a nonTRU waste stream. Coupling physical beneficiation with chemical processing will result in a substantial reduction in the volume of mixed wastes generated from dissolution recovery processes. As part of this program, we will also explore applications of aqueous biphasic extraction that include the separation and recovery of dissolved species such as metal ions and water-soluble organics. The expertise and data generated in this work will form the basis for developing more cost-effective processes for handling waste streams from environmental restoration and waste management activities within the DOE community. This report summarizes the experimental results obtained during the first year of this effort. Experimental efforts were focused on elucidating the surface and solution chemistry variables which govern partitioning behavior of plutonium …

Activation Energy for Fission (open access)

Activation Energy for Fission

Abstract: The experimentally determined exponential dependence of spontaneous fission rate on Z^2/A has been used to derive an expression for the dependence of the fission activation energy on Z^2/A. This expression has been used to calculate the activation energy for slow neutron induced fission and photofission. The correlation with the experimental data on these types of fission seems to be quite good.

Additional Experiments on Stored Energy in BNL Reactor Graphite (open access)

Additional Experiments on Stored Energy in BNL Reactor Graphite

In the memorandum entitled "Stored Energy in BNL Reactor Graphite", dated February 25, 1953, there is described an experiment conducted by Gurinsky's group to determine the energy per gram of irradiated graphite released in a 200°C anneal. Similar experiments were subsequently conducted by W. Kosiba, differing from the original in two particulars: a) Instead of two graphite samples, one normal, and one irradiated, Kosiba used only an irradiated sample which he heated first to release the stored energy, and then again after the energy was released. In this way, he obtained time against temperature curves for both normal and irradiated graphite from the same sample. (These curves are graphed for each run in Figs. 1 thru 5.) b) The vycor tubing used in the original experiment was not used by Kosiba. Five runs of this experiment were selected, Runs 4P, 13, 36, and 40 at furnace temperatures of 200°C, and Run 45 at a furnace temperature of 400°C.

Adhesion of Ice in Its Relation to the De-Icing of Airplanes (open access)

Adhesion of Ice in Its Relation to the De-Icing of Airplanes

From Summary: "The various possible means of preventing ice adhesion on airplane surfaces are critically reviewed. Results are presented of tests of the adhesives forces between ice and various solid and liquid forces. It is concluded that the de-icing of airplane wings by heat from engine exhaust shows sufficient promise to warrant full-scale tests. For propellers, at least, and possibly for certain small areas such as windshields, radio masts, etc. the use of de-icing or adhesion-preventing liquids will provide the best means of protection."
