Tolerance concentration of radioactive gases in air (open access)

Tolerance concentration of radioactive gases in air

The effects of ionizing radiation on the lung, specifically the bronchial tubes, were discussed relative to the incidence of lung cancer in radium miners. The energy transferred to the epithelium by inhaled radon was calculated, and the steps in the process leading to the initiation of cancer were described. (ACR)

P Division monthly report, July 1949

The progress report discusses activities of the P Division for the month of July, 1949. The B and F piles operated at 275 megawatts and the D pile at 305 megawatts throughout the month except for outages listed under Area Activities. A total of 57.5 tons of metal, at an average concentration of 363 megawatt days/ton (MWD/ton) was discharged from the piles during the month. This included 41.9 tons of Class V (alpha-rolled, triple-dipped, completely transformed) metal at an average concentration of 397 MWD/ton which was discharged without difficulty. A portion of this material was inspected and appears to be satisfactory for exposures at this concentration.

Hanford Engineer Works monthly report, July 1944 (open access)

Hanford Engineer Works monthly report, July 1944

This progress report discusses activities at Hanford Engineer Works for the month of July, 1944. The organization size increased rapidly in July, jumping from 1384 to 1886, an increase of 502 employees. Shortages existed on special lines such as electricians, instrument mechanics, and power operators. The opportunities to interview and employ Construction personnel improved as the Construction, organization moved past its peak employment figure. 269 houses were completed in Richland and 370 occupancies were reported, reducing the backlog of empty houses due to slow furniture movements. A total of 1530 houses or 35.6% of the village is now occupied. The overall canning yield increased from 63% to 75% while production leveled off at approximately two-thirds of design capacity. The metal machining operation and the test pile operated on a one shift-six day per week basis. The portion of the 100-B Area from the pump house through the filter plant and including the Power House was taken over by Operations on July 25. The Power House in the 200-W Area was started and flushing of process lines with water and steam got under way in the canyon. A new department was formed to control the Protection activities of the plant.

P Division monthly report, March 1949 (open access)

P Division monthly report, March 1949

This progress report discusses activities at P Division for the month of March, 1949. All piles operated at 275 megawatts throughout the month except for the outages listed under Area Activities in this report. The average time operating efficiency''was 91.4%. A total of 47 tons of metal was discharged from the piles during the month. During the month, 16.6 tons of alpha-rolled, triple-dipped metal were discharged without difficulty at a nominal concentration of 320 megawatts day (MWD) per ton. Inspection of selected tubes of this material indicated that exposures at this level are satisfactory. In view of these results the programs of stepwise increases in concentration will be continued, with the next test tonnages being discharged at a nominal concentration of 360 MWD per ton. The nominal monthly production rate of acceptable canned pieces was reduced from 90 tons to 60 tons on March 28. This curtailment of production was possible in view of the favorable inventory of slugs available for charging DR and H piles.

The trend of contamination in the air, the Columbia River, rain, sanitary water, vegetation, and wastes, at the Hanford Works for the period July, August, September 1947 (open access)

The trend of contamination in the air, the Columbia River, rain, sanitary water, vegetation, and wastes, at the Hanford Works for the period July, August, September 1947

This report summarizes the contamination observed at the Hanford Works and vicinity for the period July, August, and September, 1947. Daily or weekly trends for all sampling locations as included in previous reports are omitted except in those cases where a true trend can be established. Statistical analysis to determine significant values and differences is used whenever possible. The report is divided into the following topic sections: meteorological -- wind conditions; extent of beta contamination in air and radiation level in air; extent of contamination in the Columbia River; extent of beta contamination in rain; extent of alpha and beta contamination in sanitary water; extent of beta contamination on vegetation; and the extent of contamination in Hanford Wastes. An appraisal and review of all the results is considered in detail for each section.

P Division monthly report, May 1949 (open access)

P Division monthly report, May 1949

This progress report discusses activities for the P Division for the month of May 1949. The nominal operating level for both B and F Piles was 275 megawatts (MW) throughout the month except for outages listed under Area Activities. The D Pile operated at 275 MW until May 23 when the nominal level was raised to 290 MW in the first step of the program covered in Production Test No. 105-260-P to evaluate the feasibility of operating piles at higher power levels. A total of 44 tons of metal, at an average concentration of 285 megawatt days/ton (MWD/ton), was discharged from the piles during the month. Considerable difficulty was experienced during the month with stuck tubes containing Class IV (alpha-rolled, triple-dipped, randomly transformed) metal. A total of nine tubes with concentrations in the range of 320--370 MV/ton was encountered. As a result of these difficulties with the Class IV material, future discharges of this type metal will be limited to concentrations in the range 300--320 MWD. Approximately one ton of Class V (alpha-rolled, triple-dipped, completely transformed) metal was discharged at a concentration of 368 MV/ton for test purposes. Inspection of this material indicated that all the slugs were in satisfactory …

Source of high activity levels recently observed from shipping containers and transfer cans (open access)

Source of high activity levels recently observed from shipping containers and transfer cans

Shipping cans containing product from plant runs completed in the latter half of April and in May showed, in general, definitely higher levels of radiation than had been observed previously. Likewise, containers for the transfer of the F-10-P solution from the 224 Bldg. to 231 Bldg. (during May) exhibited higher radiation levels than could be attributed to higher power levels and increased batch sizes. These higher radiation levels were indicative that some radioactive element (or elements) was present in an amount greater than previously as would be expected from the shorter cooler periods, or that decontamination of elements previously present was less complete. It was considered essential to identify the source of these radiations and the cause for their presence has been investigated. The radioactive contaminant present in the final product has been identified rather definitely as Np{sup 239} which has 2.3d half-life a 0.25 MeV gamma ray and a weak beta ray. The amount of Np has increases as a result of the brand toward shorter cooling periods and the law decontamination factor for Np in the Separation Process.

Correlation of pressure drop data isothermal flow through standard process tube assembly (open access)

Correlation of pressure drop data isothermal flow through standard process tube assembly

The experimental data presented in HDC-1255 for the pressure drops through the various portions of a standard process tube assembly for isothermal flow are correlated in this report. Data include orifice sizes up to 0.310 inches. The equations have been adapted for the calculation of pressure drops or flow rates for clean tubes in pile operation. A systematic procedure is outlined for determining the pressure drops through each portion of the tube assembly. A method is presented for calculating the flow rate through a process tube from header pressure and panellit age readings.
