Dichromate evaluation (open access)

Dichromate evaluation

Fuel failure statistics coupled with preliminary results from the half-plant dichromate test recently completed at KW Reactor show that process water with 0.5 ppm dichromate is significantly more corrosive than process water containing 1.0 ppm dichromate with respect to localized aluminum cladding corrosion. This report provides interim water chemistry specifications subject to revision when the test data analysis is complete.

Electronic Computing Gage System for Monitoring Assembly Operations (open access)

Electronic Computing Gage System for Monitoring Assembly Operations

An electronic computing gage with IBM card punch was found to be a practical system for monitoring the critical steps in the crimping process of the assembly of some parts. In the crimping process a plastic part is compressed into a metal cup to obtain an assembled component without gaps. Dimensional data of the plastic part and metal cup are recorded on a printed tape and on IBM cards, which are used to program a computer to calculate the standard deviation of the lot. Lot acceptance is statistical and is based on the standard deviation of the lot. The electronic computing gage compares the height of the assembled components before and after crimping and indicates whether or not an acceptable assembly (without gaps) has been made. This system eliminates the need for the manual calculation of height and recording of data at the production site, thereby increasing the reliability of the assembly process at a decrease in cost.

LOWER BOUNDS ON RING SELF-FOCUSING SO AS TO MAINTAIN RING INTEGRITY DURING SPILLOUT AND SUBSEQUENT ACCELERATION

Relationships necessary for ring stability are derived between the self-focusing forces of an electron ring and the magnetic field gradient defocusing forces present near and just subsequent to spillout.

Memorandum of process standards 9-16M sodium dichromate and pH requirements, K Reactors

The purpose of this memorandum is to provide interim limits for a lower sodium dichromate feed to reduce water treatment costs. The interim limits are a function of exit water temperature and pH. The process standards will be revised when current studies on the effects of dichromate reduction are completed.

The nuclear criticality safety aspects of plutonium-238 (open access)

The nuclear criticality safety aspects of plutonium-238

Plutonium-238 is an important heat producing isotope which is being used in increasing amounts as fuel in isotopic power generators for space, terrestrial, and oceanographic applications. Only within the past few years has the quantity of plutonium-238 become large enough to be considered as a potential nuclear criticality hazard. In order to insure nuclear criticality safety in the storage, processing and assembly of devices containing plutonium-238, a program has been established at Mound Laboratory to investigate the nuclear criticality properties of this isotope. This paper will summarize what is presently known about the criticality behavior of plutonium-238, what are some of the criticality controls used as Mound Laboratory for processing plutonium-238, and what measurements are needed in order to establish a Nuclear Safety Guide for Plutonium-238.

PHYSICS WITH AND PHYSICS OF COLLIDING ELECTRON BEAMS (open access)

PHYSICS WITH AND PHYSICS OF COLLIDING ELECTRON BEAMS

When particle physics is a closed subject which has been condensed into a text book, the material will surely be organized by concepts and not according to what fact was learned on what accelerator. But short of that day facilities must be designed, planned, and developed, and experiments must be executed on one of a number of available accelerators; and a very necessary point of view is to ask what physics can be done with one facility, in contrast to another. It is in this spirit that, in this note, we look at electron colliding beam devices. In the first section we discuss the physics that can be done with colliding electron beams. After some general remarks we review the experiments already performed, and then turn to experiments planned for the future. The physics that can be done with any accelerator is a strong function of the physics of the accelerator. Every reader of this Journal knows what determines the energy of an accelerator, but the physics that determines the beam intensity, quality, and pulse length is perhaps not so well known. In fact, we plan to devote a future Comment to the physics that limits the performance of conventional …

Plant Process Surveillance System for N Reactor systems study. Rev.1

This Systems Study is submitted in accordance with the requirements of AEC Manual Chapter 1801, and proposes the procurement and implementation of a Plant Process Surveillance System for N Reactor. The envisioned system consists of instrumentation, data acquisition equipment, a digital computer, and input/output equipment. It is intended that the system will be a tool for reliable administration of safety limits and standards, simplification of plant operation, and reduction of operating costs by replacing the tasks of shift operations personnel, an instrument technician and a process engineer.

SYNTHESIS OF MONO-, DI-, AND POLYNITROXIDES. CLASSIFICATION OF ESRSPECTRA OF FLEXIBLE DINITROXIDES DISSOLVED IN LIQUIDS AND GLASSES

The synthesis of flexible biradical strain-gauges which could be anchored onto two sites of a deformable biological structure had been attempted. Qualitative relationships between the possible conformations of the biradicals and the observed ESR spectra provide guidelines for further synthetic work. Some of the nitroxides synthesized and characterized are: R-CO-R{sub 1}-N-(CH{sub 2}){sub n}-R{sub 2}-N-CO-R, where R is 1-oxyl-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl pyrroline bonded at the 3-position, n = 2,3 and R{sub 1,2} = -H; -C{sub 18}{sub 37}; -CH{sub 2}COOH; -CH{sub 2}COOC{sub 2}H{sub 5}; -CH{sub 2}CONH(CH{sub 2}){sub 2}N(CH{sub 3}){sub 2}; -CH{sub 2}CONH(CH{sub 2}){sub 2}N{sup +}(CH{sub 3}) -CH{sub 2}CO-imidazolide.
