Development of a process to lower the thermal expansion of hot pressed niobium--graphite composites (open access)

Development of a process to lower the thermal expansion of hot pressed niobium--graphite composites

Declassified 30 Aug 1973. Recent analysis of the NERVA hot end support system revealed that the high with-grain (WG) thermal expansion and the high creep deformation of NRX-A6 NERVA-type 75 wt% niobium carbide -- 25 wt% graphite hot pressed composite material may not be entirely satisfactory in future designs. Design requirements have shown the need for a better match between the normally high average coefficient of thermal expansion ( alpha ) of the composite material and the fueled graphite. A manufacturing engineering program was initiated to investigate methods for reducing the difference in the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) between the fuel and the carbide composite and, in addition, methods for reducing the creep rate. These objectives were targeted to be accomplished on 75--25 wt% composite material. It was demonstrated that the coefficient of thermal expansion can be r by about 50 percent of the difference between the coefficient for fueled graphite and that for the NRX-A6 type of composite material without compositional changes. In addition, by a slight modification of the carbide-- graphite ratio, the process should permit the matching of the CTE of fueled graphite and composite material. Improvements can be accomplished by a compressive heat treatment process …

Device for High Voltage Surge Protection (open access)

Device for High Voltage Surge Protection

The memorandum presents a description of an electric furnace used to heal test specimens, and it describes furnace damage caused by electrical arcs when a breaking specimen suddenly opens the inductive circuit. The device, which is applicable to an d-c circuit, provides a gap containing a dielectric material in parallel with he device to be protected. The gap is set to break down at a volatge well below the safe operating voltage of the device to be protected. A high voltage suddenly impressed on the parallel combination causes arcing across the gap and places a short circuit across the protected device. The current flow through the arcing circuit prevents further build-up voltage a level that might damage the protected device.

Microautoradiographic characterization of ROVER bore coating interfaces (open access)

Microautoradiographic characterization of ROVER bore coating interfaces

Declassified 28 Aug 1973. In an effort to understand the anomalous nonadherence of the NbC bore coatings on fueled ROVER elements, a modified microautoradiographic method was used to reveal the U distribution at the coating/ graphite interface. The method was used on elements manufactured with a reduced U content at the interface. Correlation between alpha tracks and the surrounding microstructure was excellent. Observations are consistent with the concept that uranium is responsible for an accelerated attack on the graphite during coating, although this is not explicitly proven. The presence of U in amounts below the detection limit of the method used is associated with tightly adherent NbC coatings. (auth)

Monochromatic Cosmic Ray Deuterion Source (open access)

Monochromatic Cosmic Ray Deuterion Source

The reaction pp {yields} {pi}{sup +}d resulting from the high energy cosmic rays incident on the interstellar hydrogen gas gives rise to secondary deuterons. Since the total cross section for this reaction is appreciable only at proton kinetic energies of 600 MeV, the deuterons have a very small spread in energy. It is estimated that the flux of deuterons from this mechanism should be easily discernible from deuterons produced by other reactions and copious enough to be detected at the earth. The narrow deuteron energy distribution could provide an energy calibration for the study of the existence of a postinjection acceleration.
