Classification - guidance for specialty irradiations

The purpose of this memorandum is to describe the concepts for accomplishing localized tailoring of thermal neutron flux. The application of fuel displacement and enrichment techniques in lattice cells surrounding a test facility may accelerate sample irradiation rates by an order of magnitude or more above those in the normal reactor environment. Thus, test irradiation conditions may be established by such flux tailoring techniques which are not indicative of the specific flux and power conditions characteristic of the reactor loading as a whole.

Dependence of the yield of the ({alpha},n) reaction on alpha particle energy

Neutron yields for alpha particle reactions with beryllium, boron, carbon, magnesium, and oxygen are calculated. The dependence on energy of the incoming alpha particles is analyzed for yield. Calculations are varied for different sets of cross section data.

Effect of negative pions on the proliferative capacity of ascites tumor cells (lymphoma) grown in vivo (open access)

Effect of negative pions on the proliferative capacity of ascites tumor cells (lymphoma) grown in vivo

We have attempted to determine the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of negative pions in the Bragg-peak region as compared to the plateau region and to gamma rays. We irradiated LAF{sub 1} mice, bearing 5-day-old lymphoma ascites tumors, in the peak and plateau regions of a 90-MeV pion beam for 40 hours in temperature-controlled holders. The animals were then sacrificed; lymphoma cells were withdrawn and titrated into adult female LAF{sub 1} mice. The proliferative capacity of the irradiated tumor cells was evaluated after 8 weeks by observing the percentage of animals developing ascites tumors. Surviving fractions were then calculated from LD{sub 50}`s of control and irradiated animals. Radiation doses in the 50 plateau region were measured with LiF dosimeters calibrated against cobalt-60 gamma rays. We calculated peak doses from those at the plateau, using a measured average peak-to-plateau ionization ratio of 1.5. Doses in the plateau region ranged from 145 to 250 rads; doses in the peak region ranged from 220 to 380 rads. The survival curve for cells irradiated in the peak region gave a D{sub 0} of 65 {plus_minus} 15 rads. The plateau points were not reliable. A replicate experiment was performed using Co{sup 60} {gamma}-rays, yielding a survival-curve …

Environmental status of the Hanford Reservation for December 1966. (Annual summary) (open access)

Environmental status of the Hanford Reservation for December 1966. (Annual summary)

Data are summarized on levels of radioactivity in environmental samples collected at Hanford during 1966, including detailed data on samples collected during December. Data are included on the radioactivity in fallout from Chinese and Russian nuclear weapons test, samples of drinking water and Columbia River water, the /sup 56/Mn content of Columbia River water sampled at various locations, the /sup 131/I content of gaseous wastes and surface waters, and the radioactivity of soil samples from the chemical separations liquid waste treatment and disposal area. The radiation dose to personnel during the year from all enviromnentl sources was estimated to be less than 0.3 percent of the applicable limits. (CH)

Low energy gamma-transitions in Pu{sup 238} and Pu{sup 240}

We investigated electron and gamma spectra of mixtures of isotopes of curium. This was done on a beta spectrometer with double focusing at an angle of {pi}{radical}2 and on a scintillation gamma spectrometer with a 40 {times} 40 mm NAI(Tl) single crystal detector. The observed electron spectrum are interpolated and presented. Also, experimental results of the ratio of conversion at L and M subshells are presented and compared to theoretical values.

Proceedings of the First International Symposium on the Biological Interpretation of Dose from Accelerator-Produced Radiation, Held at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory, Berkeley, California, March 13--16, 1967 (open access)

Proceedings of the First International Symposium on the Biological Interpretation of Dose from Accelerator-Produced Radiation, Held at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory, Berkeley, California, March 13--16, 1967

The objective of the meeting was to provide a companion meeting to the ''First Symposium on Accelerator Radiation Dosimetry and Experience'' which was held November 3-5, 1965, at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. This first symposium was limited in scope to an intensified discussion of dosimetry techniques. The biology which is associated with high energy radiation was specifically excluded, since it was the original plan to hold a second symposium devoted entirely to biology. Thus the present Symposium was a sequel to the first and they were inseparable in their objectives. Since those attending the BNL Symposium were almost entirely health physicists with a background in physical science and actively engaged in the solution of radiation protection problems at high energy accelerators, it was felt that it would be necessary to begin the BID Symposium with a general review session on radiation biology, in order to provide a biological background for the proper understanding of the later sessions. This first session was arranged to give the health physicist a meaningful transition from fundamental radiobiological considerations to current new research activities in high energy biology. In our opinion, and also based on the comments of several of those attending these objectives were …
