Corrosion of High-Temperature Alloys in Sulfur-Bearing Cracked-Ammonia Atmospheres (open access)

Corrosion of High-Temperature Alloys in Sulfur-Bearing Cracked-Ammonia Atmospheres

A representative selection of stainless alloys was exposed in sulfur- bearing cracked-ammonia atmospheres containing 43 vol. % water vapor. Experimentally controlled variables have included temperatures ranging from 1200 to 1800 deg F and S levels ranging from zero to 350 grains per 100 ft/sup 3/ of cracked ammonia. It has been found that high S levels do not result in any significant change in the corrosion behavior of materials evaluated. Increasing the temperature resulted in some modifications or Moth physical properties and scaling resistance; however, these changes are a function of the temperature and not an effect of S. (auth)

Cyanide Effects on Carbon Dioxide Fixation in Chlorella (open access)

Cyanide Effects on Carbon Dioxide Fixation in Chlorella

Green algae have been treated with radioactive KCN in an investigation of the effect of cyanide on photosynthesis. A multitude of products have been found to be formed in very short exposures (10 to 15 sec). One of these products has been identified with the product formed when the algae are given radioactive CO{sub 2} and nonradioactive KCN. The same product has been synthesized by a nonenzymatic cyanohydrin addition reaction on ribulose-1, 5-diphosphate. It has been shown to be a 2-carboxy-pentitol (probably mostly ribitol)-1, 5-diphosphate. Upon hydrolysis it gives an hydroxy acid (or mixture of isomers) closely related to hamamelonic acid. The significance of this and the other as yet unidentified products of cyanide interaction with a biological system is discussed with respect to the use of cyanide as an inhibitor.

OXIDATION OF PLUTONIUM (III) BY SODIUM NITRITE (open access)

OXIDATION OF PLUTONIUM (III) BY SODIUM NITRITE

The reaction velocity constant for the oxidation of Pu(III) by nitrite in HNO/sub 3/ solution containing ferrous sulfanate is given. The reaction rate was found to be measurable by means of spectrophotometry. The data indicate the reaction to be a pseudo first-order reaction in the region of HNO/sub 3/ and nitrite concentration of interest. The reaction velocity constant, expressed as a first-order reaction with respect to Pu, was found for several values of HNO/ sub 3/ and nitrite concentrations. The HNC/sub 3/ reaction velocity constant relationship is given. The oxidation of the ferrous sulfamate--Pu(III Pu(III) solution proceeds successively through the sulfamate, ferrous, and Pu(III) ions. An autocatalytic mechanism is asscciated with the oxidation of both ferrous and Pu ions which obviates the possibility of simple calculations of constants based on nitrite concentration. An empirical relationship between the reaction velociiy constant and the (added) nitrite concentration is given. (auth)

PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS OF SUPERCHARGED NUCLEAR RAMJET PROPULSION SYSTEM (open access)

PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS OF SUPERCHARGED NUCLEAR RAMJET PROPULSION SYSTEM

A preliminary analysis has been made to compare the performance.of a ceramic ramjet reactor powerplant, such as described in General Electric Report No. XDC-56-5-81, with that of such a powerplant supercharged by a metallic-vapor-cycle compressor jet. Performance at sea level, Mach 2.5 is ·reported for the vapor-cycle compressor jet alone, for the ramjet alone, and for the compressor jet - ramjet combination. Results indicate that adding the compressor-jet as a supercharger for the ramjet provides an increase in specific thrust of about 20 percent over that of the ramjet alone, with an attendant increase in thermal efficiency of about 20 percent over that of the ramjet alone.
