242-A/LERF programmable Logic Controller Ladder. Revision 1

This document defines and describes the user-generated application software written to transmit digital and analog signals from the Liquid Effluent Retention Facility (LERF) to the 242-A Evaporator Distributed Control System (DCS). PLCs and modems were installed in the 242-A Evaporator by Project W-105 (LERF) to transmit 6 analog liquid level signals, 6 range alarms based on the analog signals, and 6 leak detection and pump status signals to the 242-A Distributive Control System (DCS) from LERF. Communications between the two facilities are also monitored and alarm on the DCS. Following the Project W-105 completion, the communications and signal mix were modified by Project C-018H (ETF). The current PLC software (including ladder logic and data tables), PLC hardware settings, and modern option settings to transmit the signals and monitor communications are documented and described in this document.

Accelerator modeling at SPEAR

The response matrix, consisting of the closed orbit change at each beam position monitor (BPM) due to corrector magnet excitations, was measured and analyzed in order to calibrate a linear optics model of SPEAR. The model calibration was accomplished by varying model parameters to minimize the chi-square difference between the measured and the model response matrices. The singular value decomposition (SVD) matrix inversion method was used to solve the simultaneous equations. The calibrated model was then used to calculate corrections to the operational lattice. The results of the calibration and correction procedures are presented.

Accurate atomistic simulations of the Peierls barrier and kink-pair formation energy for {lt}111{gt} screw dislocations in bcc-Mo

Using multi-ion MGPT interatomic potentials derived from first- principles generalized pseudopotential theory, we have performed accurate atomistic simulations on the energetic of dislocation motion in the bcc transition metal Mo. Our calculated results include the (110) and (211) generalized stacking fault ({gamma}) energy surfaces, the Peierls stress required to move an ideal straight <111> screw dislocation, and the kink-pair formation energy for nonstraight screw dislocations. Many-body angular forces, which are accounted for in the present theory through explicit three- and four-ion potentials, are quantitatively important to such properties for the bcc transition metals. This is demonstrated explicitly through the calculated {gamma} surfaces, which are found to be 10-50% higher in energy than those obtained with pure radial-force models. The Peierls stress for an applied <111>/{l_brace}112{r_brace} shear is computed to be about 0.025{mu}, where {mu} is the bulk shear modulus. For zero applied stress, stable kink pairs are predicted to form for kink lengths greater than 4b, where b is the magnitude of the Burgers vector. For long kinks greater than 15b, the calculated asymptotic value of the kink-pair formation energy is 2.0 eV.

The Henry's law type constants of OH and HO{sub 2} have not been experimentally determined for obvious reasons: it is extremely difficult to measure the concentrations of these reactive species in either the gas phase or the aqueous phase, let alone simultaneously in both phases. At a more fundamental level, because these radicals react rapidly in both phases, compared with mass-transfer rates characterizing typical laboratory multi-phase systems, the gas-liquid equilibrium which is necessary for such measurements to be feasible is typically not attainable. Consequently, the Henry's law constants of these radicals are traditionally evaluated from the free energy of solution, {Delta}{sub sol}G{sup 0}(X) accompanying the process of transferring a molecule X from the gas phase, denoted g, to the aqueous phase, a, i.e. X{sub g} {rightleftharpoons} X{sub a} (9.10); using the equation {Delta}{sub sol}G{sup o}(X) = -RT ln k{sub H} (9.11); {Delta}{sub sol}G{sup o}(X) is defined as {Delta}{sub sol}G{sup o}(X) = {Delta}{sub f}G{sup o}(X){sub a} - {Delta}{sub f}G{sup o}(X){sub g} (9.12) where the free energies of formation of X in the gas phase and in the aqueous phase are typically evaluated using thermochemical cycles.

Adsorbate structures and catalytic reactions studied in the torrpressure range by scanning tunneling microscopy

High-pressure, high-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (HPHTSTM) was used to study adsorbate structures and reactions on single crystal model catalytic systems. Studies of the automobile catalytic converter reaction [CO + NO {yields} 1/2 N{sub 2} + CO{sub 2}] on Rh(111) and ethylene hydrogenation [C{sub 2}H{sub 4} + H{sub 2} {yields} C{sub 2}H{sub 6}] on Rh(111) and Pt(111) elucidated information on adsorbate structures in equilibrium with high-pressure gas and the relationship of atomic and molecular mobility to chemistry. STM studies of NO on Rh(111) showed that adsorbed NO forms two high-pressure structures, with the phase transformation from the (2 x 2) structure to the (3 x 3) structure occurring at 0.03 Torr. The (3 x 3) structure only exists when the surface is in equilibrium with the gas phase. The heat of adsorption of this new structure was determined by measuring the pressures and temperatures at which both (2 x 2) and (3 x 3) structures coexisted. The energy barrier between the two structures was calculated by observing the time necessary for the phase transformation to take place. High-pressure STM studies of the coadsorption of CO and NO on Rh(111) showed that CO and NO form a mixed (2 x 2) structure …

Advanced ceramics for land-based gas turbine applications. Final report

In order to increase the efficiency of land-based gas turbines, inlet gas temperatures have to be increased, and the amount of air which cools the turbine vanes has to be reduced, to the maximum extent possible. Presently, thermal barrier coatings (TBC`s) are the state of the art in achieving these goals. However, since TBC`s are very thin (typically 100 {mu}m), they have clearly limitations. Since all-ceramic turbine vanes would be a very large and risky development step, Westinghouse is considering to protect the leading edges of turbine vanes with high-performance ceramics. This might be done by either replacing the leading edge with a suitably shaped ceramic part, or by modifying the vanes such that they can accommodate ceramic inserts. Among the most important criteria for the success of ceramics in such applications are (a) thermodynamic compatibility with the turbine vane alloy, (b) sufficient thermal shock resistance to survive the thermal cycling during operation and in particular during emergency shut-down, and a design considering the thermal expansion mismatch of the metallic and ceramic components. This paper presents results of work performed on SiC, SiN, and aluminas.

ALE3D Simulation and Measurement of Violence in a Fast Cookoff Experiment for LX-10

Fast cookoff is of interest in the areas of fire hazard reduction and the development of directed energy systems for defense. During a fast cookoff (thermal explosion), high heat fluxes cause rapid temperature increases and ignition in thin boundary layers. We are developing ALE3D models to describe the thermal, chemical, and mechanical behavior during the heating, ignition, and explosive phases. The candidate models and numerical strategies are being evaluated using benchmark cookoff experiments. Fast cookoff measurements were made in a Scaled-Thermal-Explosion-eXperiment (STEX) for LX-10 (94.7% HMX, 5.3% Viton A) confined in a 4130 steel tube with reinforced end caps. Gaps were present at the side and top of the explosive charge to allow for thermal expansion. The explosive was heated until explosion using radiant heaters. Temperatures were measured using thermocouples positioned on the tube wall and in the explosive. During the explosion, the tube expansion and fragment velocities were measured with strain gauges, Photonic-Doppler-Velocimeters (PDVs), and micropower radar units. A fragment size distribution was constructed from fragments captured in Lexan panels. Algorithm for Unfolding Current from Faraday Rotation Measurement

Various methods are described to translate Faraday rotation measurements into a useful representation of the dynamic current under investigation[1]. For some experiments, simply counting the “fringes” up to the turnaround point in the recorded Faraday rotation signal is sufficient in determining the peak current within some allowable fringe uncertainty. For many other experiments, a higher demand for unfolding the entire dynamic current profile is required. In such cases, investigators often rely extensively on user interaction on the Faraday rotation data by visually observing the data and making logical decisions on what appears to be turnaround points and/or inflections in the signal. After determining extrema, inflection points, and locations, a piece-wise, ΔI/Δt, representation of the current may be revealed with the proviso of having a reliable Verdet constant of the Faraday fiber or medium and time location for each occurring fringe. In this paper, a unique software program is reported which automatically decodes the Faraday rotation signal into a time-dependent current representation. System parameters such as the Faraday fiber’s Verdet constant and number of loops in the sensor are the only user-interface inputs. Alpha Particle Ionization of Argon Mixtures--Further Study of the Role of Excited States

BS>The average energy required to form an ion pair, W, when alpha particles are absorbed in mixtures of argon with other gases is studied. The other gases were selected on the basis of their ionization potentials. One group consists of representative gases that have ionization potentials below that of Ar (15.77 ev) and above the doublet metastable state of Ar (11.49 and 11.66 ev). This list includes methane, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, xenon, and krypton. The other group of special interest consists of some gases with ionization potentials below the metastable state of Ar. All gases tested in these two groups cause an increase in ionization, i e., a decrease in W, when added to argon. As an illustration of this effect, the addition of 1/2% of acetylene to Ar will increase the ionization by 23% The experimental data, i.e., W as a function of relative concentration of the two gases, were fitted to a model in which it is assumed that energy is transferred from two excited levels in argon to the additive gases in collision processes. Analysis of a signal transduction pathway involved in leaf epidermis differentiation.

The major objective of this study was to identify and analyze signal transduction factors that function with the CR4 receptor kinase. We pursued this analysis in Arabidopsis. Analysis of other members of the ACR4 related receptor (CRR) family produced biochemical evidence consistent with some of them functioning in ACR4 signal transduction. Yeast 2-hybrid identified six proteins that interact with the cytoplasmic domain of ACR4, representing putative downstream signal transduction components. The interactions for all 6 proteins were verified by in vitro pull down assays. Five of the interacting proteins were phosphorylated by ACR4. We also identified candidate interactors with the extracellular TNFR domain. We hypothesize this may be the ligand binding domain for ACR4. In one approach, yeast 2-hybrid was again used and five candidate proteins identified. Nine additional candidates were identified in a genome wide scan of Arabidopsis amino acid sequences that threaded onto the TNF structure.

Analyzing power measurements in high-P/sub perpendicular to//sup 2/ p-p elastic scattering

The analyzing power in 28 GeV/c proton-proton elastic scattering was measured at P/sub perpendicular to//sup 2/ = 5.95 and 6.56 (GEV/c)/sup 2/ y/sub g/ a polarized proton target and an unpolarized proton beam at the Brookhaven National Laboratory AGS. Results indicate that the analyzing power, A, is rising sharply with P/sub perpendicular to//sup 2/. Previous measurements of the analyzing power, A, in p + p ..-->.. p + p suggested a rise in A at large-P/sub perpendicular to//sup 2/, but the statistical uncertainty in the highest point at P/sub perpendicular to//sup 2/ = 5.95 (GeV/c)/sup 2/ made it impossible to determine the magnitude of the increase. In an effort to clarify this situation, we made new measurements of A at P/sub perpendicular to//sup 2/ = 5.95 and 6.56 (GeV/c)/sup 2/. An unpolarized beam of typically 5 x 10/sup 10/ 28 GeV/c protons from the AGS at Brookhaven National Laboratory was incident upon the University of Michigan polarized proton target. This target contains irradiated ammonia beads cooled to 0.5/sup 0/K by a /sup 3/He-/sup 4/He evaporation refrigerator, in a 2.5 T magnetic field. Angular distribution of laser ablation plasma

An expansion of a laser induced plasma is fundamental and important phenomena in a laser ion source. To understand the expanding direction, an array of Langmuir probes were employed. The chosen ion for the experiment was Ag{sup 1+} which was created by a second harmonics of a Nd-YAG laser. The obtained angular distribution was about {+-}10 degree. This result also indicates a proper positioning of a solenoid magnet which enhances ion beam current.

Anisotropic Pressure, Transport, and Shielding of Magnetic Perturbations

We compute the effect on a tokamak of applying a nonaxisymmetric magnetic perturbation δΒ. An equilibrium with scalar pressure p yields zero net radial current, and therefore zero torque. Thus, the usual approach, which assumes scalar pressure, is not self-consistent, and masks the close connection which exists between that radial current and the in-surface currents, which provide shielding or amplification of δΒ. Here, we analytically compute the pressure anisoptropy, anisoptropy, pll, p⊥ ≠ p, and from this, both the radial and in-surface currents. The surface-average of the radial current recovers earlier expressions for ripple transport, while the in-surface currents provide an expression for the amount of self-consistent shielding the plasma provides.

Appalachian Clean Coal Technology Consortium. Technical progress report, January 1--March 31, 1996

The Appalachian Clean Coal Technology Consortium has been established to help U.S. Coal producers, particularly those in the Appalachian region, increase the production of lower-sulfur coal. In keeping with the recommendations of the Advisory Committee, first-year R&D activities are focused on two areas of research: fine coal dewatering and modeling of spirals. The industry representatives to the Consortium identified fine coal dewatering as the most needed area of technology development. Dewatering studies are conducted by Virginia Tech`s Center for Coal and Minerals Processing. A spiral model will be developed by West Virginia University. The research to be performed by the University of Kentucky has recently been defined as: A Study of Novel Approaches for Destabilization of Flotation Froth. Accomplishments to date of these three projects are presented in this report.
