3-D sedimentological and geophysical studies of clastic reservoir analogs: Facies architecture, reservoir properties, and flow behavior within delta front facies elements of the Cretaceous Wall Creek Member, Frontier Formation, Wyoming

This project examined the internal architecture of delta front sandstones at two locations within the Turonian-age Wall Creek Member of the Frontier Formation, in Wyoming. The project involved traditional outcrop field work integrated with core-data, and 2D and 3D ground penetrating radar (GPR) imaging from behind the outcrops. The fluid-flow engineering work, handled through a collaborative grant given to PI Chris White at LSU, focused on effects on fluid flow of late-stage calcite cement nodules in 3D. In addition to the extensive field component, the work funded 2 PhD students (Gani and Lee) and resulted in publication of 10 technical papers, 17 abstracts, and 4 internal field guides. PI Bhattacharya also funded an additional 3 PhD students that worked on the Wall Creek sandstone funded separately through an industrial consortium, two of whom graduated in the fall 2006 ((Sadeque and Vakarelov). These additional funds provided significant leverage to expand the work to include a regional stratigraphic synthesis of the Wall Creek Member of the Frontier Formation, in addition to the reservoir-scale studies that DOE directly funded. Awards given to PI Bhattacharya included the prestigious AAPG Distinguished Lecture Award, which involved a tour of about 25 Universities and Geological Societies in …

3 GeV Injector Design Handbook (open access)

3 GeV Injector Design Handbook

This Design Handbook is intended to be the main reference book for the specifications of the 3 GeV SPEAR booster synchrotron project. It is intended to be a consistent description of the project including design criteria, key technical specifications as well as current design approaches. Since a project is not complete till it's complete changes and modifications of early conceptual designs must be expected during the duration of the construction. Therefore, this Design Handbook is issued as a loose leaf binder so that individual sections can be replaced as needed. Each page will be dated to ease identification with respect to latest revisions. At the end of the project this Design Handbook will have become the 'as built' reference book of the injector for operations and maintenance personnel.

16-APR-03 Final Release of ENDF/B-V for use with LLNL Codes (open access)

16-APR-03 Final Release of ENDF/B-V for use with LLNL Codes

The new data files were prepared in two steps. First, the ENDF/B-V database was translated to an ENDL-format ascii database. The ENDL ascii format is a point-wise tabular storage scheme where intermediate values are extracted via interpolation. Sufficient point-wise information was generated in the translation to insure an extraction tolerance of 0.1% for most of the data. The only exception is along the incident neutron energy axis of the outgoing particle energy probability density function where a 0.5% tolerance was maintained. Second, processed files were generated from the translated database. Since the translated ENDF/B-V data is in ENDL-format, the standard processing codes were used to generate the new processed data files. To the best of our knowledge, these processed data files are accurate representations of the ENDF/B-V database to within the stated tolerances. However, there are several issues that users must be aware of and they are listed in this report.

45-Day safety screening for Tank 241-C-103 push mode sample, riser 2 (open access)

45-Day safety screening for Tank 241-C-103 push mode sample, riser 2

This is the 45-Day report for the Tank 241-C-103 (C-103) push-mode core sampling characterization effort. Problems encountered with the push-mode sampling truck following removal of the first segment from riser 2 resulted in a long delay before resumption of sampling, therefore it was decided to begin the 45-day clock and issue a report based on receipt of this first segment. If subsequent segments are removed from tank C-103, a revision of this report or a new report will be issued to include any new data. Included are copies of the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) scans as requested in Reference 1. Also included is a copy of any immediate notification documentation. Other pertinent documentation will be included in the C-103 216-day report.

105-F intermediate range test hole parameters (open access)

105-F intermediate range test hole parameters

This report discusses 105 intermediate range test hole which was bored in 105-F to demonstrate reactor hole boring techniques. This test hole was then utilized to determine the performance of neutron sensitive gamma compensated ion chambers (CIC), the effectiveness of epoxy reactor shield plug designs, the compatability of the prototype.components intermediate range instrumentation, and demonstrate the performance of an intermediate range monitor system on a typical Hanford reactor application. In the process of determining the above information physical, nuclear, gamma, and temperature data was recorded as related to the 105-F intermediate range monitor test hole and is provided in this report.

241-SY modular exhauster pad analysis (open access)

241-SY modular exhauster pad analysis

The purpose of this document is to show the analytical results which were reached in analyzing the new 241-SY modular exhauster concrete pad and retaining wall. The analysis covers wind loading (80 mph), an equivalent static load due to a seismic event, and from those two results, a determination of the pad thickness and the location and size of reinforcement bar was made. The analysis of the exhauster assembly and sampling cabinet evaluated overturning of the assemblies as a whole. An analysis was then performed for the bolting requirements for these two assemblies. The reason why this was broken up into components was to determine if the individual components could take the load exerted by the workset case loading condition, whether it be wind or seismic. The retaining wall that will be located near the new concrete pad was also analyzed. The retaining wall was evaluated to determine the area of reinforcement required, the location of reinforcement, as well as the mass and configuration of the wall to prevent overturning or sliding. The wall was considered Non-Safety Class 4. Additional piping was required to tie-in the new exhauster to the existing primary ventilation ductwork. The design for the tie-in includes …

291-B-1 stack monitoring and sampling system annual system assessment report (open access)

291-B-1 stack monitoring and sampling system annual system assessment report

The B Plant 291-B-1 main stack exhausts gaseous effluents to the atmosphere from the 221-B Building canyon and cells, the No. 1 Vessel Ventilation System (VVS1), the 212-B Cask Station cell ventilation system, and, to a limited capacity, the 224-B Building. VVS1 collects offgases from various process tanks in 221-B Building, while the 224-B system maintains a negative pressure in out-of-service, sealed process tanks. B Plant Administration Manual, WHC-CM-7-5, Section 5.30 requires an annual system assessment to evaluate and report the present condition of the sampling and monitoring system associated with Stack 291-B-1 (System Number B977A) at B Plant. The system is functional and performing satisfactorily.

324 Building fire hazards analysis implementation plan (open access)

324 Building fire hazards analysis implementation plan

In March 1998, the 324 Building Fire Hazards Analysis (FHA) (Reference 1) was approved by the US Department of Energy, Richland Operations Office (DOE-RL) for implementation by B and W Hanford Company (BWHC). The purpose of the FHA was to identify gaps in compliance with DOE Order 5480.7A (Reference 2) and Richland Operations Office Implementation Directive (RLID) 5480.7 (Reference 3), especially in regard to loss limitation. The FHA identified compliance gaps in six areas and provided 20 recommendations to bring the 324 Building into compliance with DOE Order 5480.7A. Additionally, one observation was provided. To date, four of the recommendations and the one observation have been completed. Actions identified for seven of the recommendations are currently in progress. Exemption requests will be transmitted to DOE-RL for three of the recommendations. Six of the recommendations are related to future shut down activities of the facility and the corrective actions are not being addressed as part of this plan. The actions for recommendations associated with the safety related part of the 324 Building and operation of the cells and support areas were evaluated using the Unreviewed Safety Question (USQ) process. Major Life Safety Code concerns have been corrected. The status of the …
