Results of a preliminary design study for a solar-powered irrigation facility to be located on a farm between Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona, are presented. The ERDA-specified generic design criteria are detailed. A detailed systems analysis is presented, and preliminary designs of the thermal storage system, organic Rankine cycle power system, cooling water system, power distribution system, and collector foundation are given. 236-Z canyon utilization study

The 236-Z canyon contains equipment for repurification of plutonium and recovery of plutonium from scrap material. To meet production requirements of Fast Flux Test Facility/Clinch River Breeder Reactor oxide with the existing plant, several new pieces of equipment will be needed in the future. More storage space and a better accountability system are needed to support this increased production. The available canyon space needs to be utilized to its fullest in order to accommodate the new equipment. The purpose of this document is to identify the new pieces of equipment, show how they fit into the flowsheet, and locate them in the canyon.

Adhesive bonding of TATB/Kel-F 800

Triaminotrinitrobenzene (TATB) bonded with a copolymer of chlorotrifluoroethylene and vinylidene fluoride (Kel-F 800) was selected as the high explosive for use in the B77 bomb. The plastic-bonded explosive (RX-03-BB, 7.5 percent Kel-F 800) has high strength and is less sensitive to shock initiation than most previously used high explosives. Adhesive bonding of RX-03-BB has proved to be difficult, however, because of the chemical composition of both the TATB and the binder. Studies of the critical surface tension of the TATB, the binder, and the RX-03-BB using contact-angle measurements were made. Surface-tension measurements were made on modified epoxies and used as a guide in formulating new adhesives. A new adhesive, EXPLOSTIK 473, has a surface tension less than RX-03-BB and has satisfactory bond strength to over 75/sup 0/C.

Age-dependent radiosensitivity of mouse oocytes

It has been shown that there are three distinct phases of radiosensitivity in oocytes of prepubertal mice: a period of rapidly increasing sensitivity between 0 and 4 days of age; a period of consistent, high sensitivity between 5 and 18 days of age; and a period of decreasing sensitivity from 19 to at least 21 days of age. Two distinct phases have been demonstrated for the rate of population decline of the oocytes of primary follicles: an initial period of rapid loss from 0 to 4 days of age; and a period of much slower loss from 5 through 23 days of age. Correlations have been drawn between the first two phases of radiosensitivity and morphological changes in the oocyte, and between the third phase of radiosensitivity and endocrinological changes in the maturing animal. The reaction of oocytes to radiation has been separated into two categories: immediate death (within 24 hours); and delayed death (over the entire lifespan of the animal). (auth)

Analysis of costs and benefits for eight powerplant productivity improvement projects. Project 1, Task 3. Final report

In 1976, DOE (FEA) sponsored the development of a systematic methodology for the identification and analysis of candidate projects which a utility might undertake to improve baseload unit reliability. This methodology also enabled the user to estimate a project's effect on the future performance of the unit. A project was sponsored in Illinois to demonstrate the methodology and to encourage increased power plant productivity in the state. A total of 8 improvement projects were conducted and analyzed at Illinois Power Company Wood River 5 and Commonwealth Edison Company Quad Cities 1 and 2 units. A general description of the approach followed in estimating costs and benefits and in presenting the results for the 8 projects is provided. A brief technical description of the projects and their total cost, total benefits, net present value, and benefit-to-cost ratio is given. Detailed cost and benefit summaries for each project are presented followed by a discussion of the results.

Antineutrino Interactions in the 14' H(2)-Neon BC

We propose a 50-100,000 photo exploratory exposure of the 14{prime} BC filled with {approx}30% Neon, 70% H{sub 2}, to a broad band {bar {nu}} beam produced by whatever intensity ({approx}> 10{sup 12}) IP/pulse and energy ({approx}> 200 GeV) external proton beam is initially available. The Ne-H{sub 2} mixture permits {approx}10 x higher event rate than pure H{sub 2}; also direct detection of {gamma}, K{sub 2}{sup o}, n; better {mu}{sup {+-}}, e{sup {+-}} identification and the possibility of coherent production reactions from the nucleus as a whole as well as incoherent reactions from both neutrons and protons. The event rate vs. E{sub {bar {nu}}} and q{sup 2} will be measured to {approx}130 GeV permitting (in comparison with HBC experiments) estimate of the A dependence of {sigma}{sub T}, and (given crude flux estimates) tests of scaling and locality in d{sup 2}{sigma}/dE{sub {bar {nu}}}dq{sup 2} and {sigma}{sub T} as well as comparison of {sigma}{sub T} on n and p and of these with corresponding {nu} cross sections. Cross sections, particle momenta, invariant mass and angular correlation spectra will be measured for dominant channels permitting crude tests of {Delta}I = 1, {Delta}I = 1/2, {Delta}S = {Delta}Q, {Delta}S {ne} 2 rules. Growth of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) and Tilapia zillii in the Reft River Geothermal Area (RRGT) geothermal waters can equal or surpass that in a commercial aquaculture facility. Fish and prawn mortality over the course of the intermediate term preliminary study did not appear to be related to any inherent geothermal water chemistry conditions. Temperature control was a problem but does not appear to be beyond design control. The absence of temperature-related mortality in channel catfish, Tilapia zilli, and yellow perch (Perca flavescens) indicates increased survival and suggests reduced expenditures for disease control. It may also allow higher fish densities in commercial aquaculture operations using geothermal water. Results of this study indicate potential for commercial aquaculture development at the Raft River Geothermal Testing Site.

Artificial geothermal reservoirs in hot volcanic rock

S>Some recent results from the Los Alamos program in which hydraulic fracturing is used for the recovery of geothermal energy are discussed. The location is about 4 kilometers west and south of the ring fault of the enormous Jemez Caldera in the northcentral part of New Mexico. It is shown that geothermal energy may be extracted from hot rock that does not contain circulating hot water or steam and is relatively impermeable. A fluid is pumped at high pressure into an isolated section of a wellbore. If the well is cased the pipe in this pressurized region is perforated as it is in the petroleum industry, so that the pressure may be applied to the rock, cracking it. A second well is drilled a few hundred feet away from the first. Cold water is injected through the first pipe, circulates through the crack, and hot water returns to the surface through the second pipe. Results are described and circumstances are discussed under which artiflcial geothermal reservoirs might be created in the basaltic rock of Hawaii. (MCW)

During this reporting period the automated module design was completed. The design of the solar cell assembly prototype (SCAP) was about 75% completed and the solar panel lamination prototype (SPLP) was built and tested.

The objective of this program is to design, fabricate and demonstrate an automated solar cell module production line with the ultimate goal of reducing module assembly costs. During this reporting period a redesign of the SCAP soldering mechanism was effected due to temperature/friction problems encountered. The in-line cleaning system was designed and ordered and the Mular backbone attachment mechanism was assembled. The SPLP production prototype was fabricated and operated. Two hand-assembled versions of the automated module design completed 750 thermal cycles. Albuquerque Laboratory, Ardev Inc., is under subcontract to develop the soldering equipment on this program. The lamination development is being done by ARCO Solar, Inc.

Calibration of thin film EMP sensors by AFWL Coaxial Chamber

Preliminary EMP calibration data on magnetic thin film current sensors has been obtained. The Air Force Weapon Lab's Coaxial Chamber was used as the EMP standard and a current pulse width of 40 ns was used. It was found that the sensitivity of the sensors can be increased by controlling the width of the 90/sup 0/ wall strip and that the current scales for the sensors were linear. The results strongly suggest that the dimensions of the sensors can be varied to meet different measurement requirements.

This reasonably self-contained report on Catastrophe Theory begins with the mathematical history of Catastrophe Theory and discusses the relation between Catastrophe Theory and the ''Catastrophe Theorem'' presented in the report. Catastrophe Theory consists of a ''local'' classification theorem for unfoldings of germ singularities, which satisfy certain conditions. The ''classification'' is a list of seven (nonsimilar) irreducible unfoldings (and their respective germs), such that the given unfolding must be reduced with index zero to exactly one of these (or to the ''constant'' unfolding of the same unfolding dimension). The Catastrophe Theorem is stated (together with background definitions and commentary) and a summary of the proof of this theorem is given. 6 tables. (RWR)

Certification of packagings: compliance with DOT specification 7A packaging requirements

A study was conducted to determine which of the packagings currently listed in CFR 49 Section 173.395 a.1-5, meet the Specification 7A requirements (CFR 49 Section 173.350). According to DOT HM-111 the present listing of various authorized DOT specifications in Section 173.394 and Section 173.395 (Type A containers) of ICC Tariff No. 27 would be deleted with complete reliance being placed on the use of DOT 7A, Type A general packaging specification. Each user of a Specification 7A package would be required to document and maintain on file for one year a written record of his determination of compliance with the DOT Specification 7A performance requirements. All the specification packagings listed in CFR 49 Section 173.395a.1-5 were tested and shown to meet the Specification 7A criteria; however, in many cases qualifications were placed on their use. Forty-nine specification packagings were tested and shown to meet the DOT Specification 7A performance requirements and since there were several styles of some specific packagings, this amounts to greater than 80 packagings. The extensive testing generally indicated a high degree of containment integrity in the packagings tested and the documentation discussed is a valuable tool for shippers of Type A quantities of radioactive materials. …

Characterization and analysis of Devonian shales as related to release of gaseous hydrocarbons. Quarterly technical progress report, April--June 1978

Objective is to determine the relationships between the shale characteristics, hydrocarbon gas contents, and well location, for assessing the productive capacity of the Eastern Devonian Gas Shale deposits and guiding research, development, and demonstration projects to enhance the recovery of natural gas from the shale deposits. One well was sampled during this reporting period. Another well from Monongalia County, WV (M-1) was cored in April. 31 samples were obtained for Battelle with additional 55 samples canned for other DOE contractors. Characterization tasks on shale samples from R-146 (Mason County, WV.) and M-1 wells (Monongalia) have been completed. In the preliminary analysis correlations were observed between the hydrocarbon gas contents and can pressure, propane content, well location, oxygen content CO/sub 2/ content, bulk density and carbon contents. Higher pressures are attributed to higher hydrocarbon gas contents. For high gas pressures, propane content is an important indication of hydrocarbon gas content. At low gas pressure, butane contents more accurately predict the hydrocarbon gas contents. High CO/sub 2/ and carbon contents indicate high hydrocarbon gas values, whereas oxygen contents are inversely related to hydrocarbon gas contents. Computer model for ductile fracture

A computer model is described for predicting ductile fracture initiation and propagation. The computer fracture model is calibrated by simple and notched round-bar tension tests and a precracked compact tension test. The model is used to predict fracture initiation and propagation in a Charpy specimen and compare the results with experiments. The calibrated model provides a correlation between Charpy V-notch (CVN) fracture energy and any measure of fracture toughness, such as J/sub Ic/. A second simpler empirical correlation was obtained using the energy to initiate fracture in the Charpy specimen rather than total energy CVN, and compared the results with the empirical correlation of Rolfe and Novak.

Correlation of Substructure With Mechanical Properties of Plastically Deformed Reactor Structural Materials. Progress Report, January 1, 1976--June 30, 1977

Transmission electron microscopy used to evaluate the deformation (creep, fatigue and tensile) induced microstructure of 304 SS, Incoloy 800, 330 SS and three of the experimental alloys (E19, E23 and E36) obtained from the National Alloy Program clearly shows that the relationship between the subgrain size (lambda) and the applied stress (sigma) obeys the equation lambda = Ab (sigma/E)/sup -1/ where A is a constant of the order of 4, b the Burgers rector and E is Young's modulus. Hot-hardness studies on 304 SS, 316 SS, Incoloy 800, 2 /sup 1///sub 4/ Cr-1 Mo steels, 330 SS, Inconel 718, PE-16, Inconel 706, M-813 and the above three experimental alloys suggests that reasonable effective activation energies for creep may be obtained through the use of the hardness test as a strength microprobe tool. The ordering of the strength levels obtained through hot-hardness follows quite closely that obtained in tensile tests when those data are available.

Design for an information-management system

The design of an information management system to assemble, classify, and catalog existing documentation on the development of the Geysers/Calistoga Known Geothermal Resources Area (KGRA) is presented. The study consisted of several components: user need requirements, design of the system, survey of information management systems, and systems analysis and cost proposal. User input concerning information requirements and system characteristics were obtained from interviews (personal and telephone) and a questionnaire. The sample user population expressed a need for the identification and access to relevant information concerning local geothermal development. Furthermore, it was a consensus of opinion that the creation of an information center as a depository for relevant documentation would be useful in meeting information needs. The production of a book catalog utilizing automatic data processing (ADP) and a data base management system (DBMS) approach is proposed. The catalog would contain full bibliographic descriptions for all records as well as abstracts for highly significant documents.
