A document titled "Additional Dissenting Views of Honorable Omar Burleson," which is a discussion by Burleson of a bill that he introduced in 1969 and again in 1971 to decentralize two programs bogged down with red tape. The Committee's bill does the opposite by compounding the existing over-centralization and costing the taxpayer. Good government is economical and efficient and provides services desired by the people. "The Committee's bill, by giving a bigger prize to states imposing higher taxes, equates good government with expensive government. This is fundamentally wrong in principle."

C. - The total self-interest of the United States should govern her actions in all foreign affairs." "Should decisions on the actual execution of policy be left to the Congress, there would likely be as many different approaches to every question as there are Members, each believing that whatever he espouses is in our own 'self-interest'. Essentially this is the core of the present debate in the United States Senate."

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas, from Omar Burleson, House of Representatives, Washington, D. C., dated July 5, 1972. Burleson expresses his appreciation for Carswell's letter and kind comments noting their agreement on the need to maintain the Nation's security. He advises of the so-called Revenue Sharing proposal passing the House, of his vote against it and of the enclosed copy of dissenting views he filed with the Committee. A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas from Boone Powell, Jr., Administrator, Hendrick Memorial Hospital dated May 9, 1972. Powell advises Carswell of an enclosed cafeteria card which is to in a small way say "thank you" for his continuous service and acknowledges that Carswell is the only living Charter Member of the Board of Trustees.

A letter written to Norwood [T. N. Carswell] from Clifford and Zeke, dated October 7, 1972. Clifford and Zeke express their appreciation for hearing from Carswell that morning and advise that Iverson will answer Carswell's letter regarding the cemetery plots. They discuss their failing eye sight and their health, in general, wishing Carswell lived across the street for company for them since they no longer drive noting all of Zeke's family has passed away.

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas from Elwin L. Skiles, President, Hardin-Simmons University dated April 21, 1970. Skiles expresses his appreciation for the participation by Carswell in the Founders Day program stressing that the assistance of the first Olsen Medalist added a great deal to the wonderful occasion.

A letter written to Mr. Carswell from Ethel and Glyn Quade, Sagerton, Texas, dated August 3, 1970. Quade expresses their disappointment that they missed Carswell when he drove out there. She expresses their appreciation for the azaleas and Ideals books, asks after Mrs. Carswell and invites him to drive out on Friday for an evening meal noting that Lyndell will be home that evening.

Letter written to Mr. Carswell from Glyn G. Quade, Sagerton, Texas dated February 1, 1973. Quade expresses his hope that Carswell has overcome his fall and is able to be around again. He advises that it is income tax reporting time again and that if Carswell is back at the office then he will bring his papers for him to prepare.

A letter written to Mr. Carswell from Ethel and Glyn Quade, Sagerton, Texas, dated November 16, 1970. The Quades express their appreciation for the gifts of the Ideals Book and the fruit cake and issue an invitation to Carswell to be with them on Thanksgiving day.

A letter written to Mr. Carswell from Mrs. Glyn (Ethel) Quade, Sagerton, Texas, dated May 7, 1970. Quade expresses her wish to see him and Mrs. Carswell again and, also, expresses her appreciation for the Ideals subscription. She asks what is happening to our beautiful America, land of the free, discussing the student unrest not only on the campuses at Lawrence, Kansas where Larry attends and at the University of Texas where Lyndell attends but all over the country pointing to the war and draft as a continual dread for students. She advises that Glyn is doing fairly well, the Jack Quades are all right and asks after Mrs. Carswell.

A letter addressed to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas from Glenn L. Archer, Executive Director, Americans United for separation of church and state, dated October 3, 1972. Archer expresses his appreciation for the personal note from Carswell and concurs that they have kindred spirits. He advises that he thinks that Carswell is a "mighty young 85", notes that he appreciates the load that Carswell is carrying regarding his wife and offers to send the magazine for old times' sake. Archer expresses his concern that the job regarding separation of church and state gets bigger all the time and asks that Carswell breath a little extra of that good Texas air for him and tells of his dream to be back in Kansas "where my grandfather took a homestead, where a man lived near the sky and God was all around you". The reverse side includes printed letterhead with a listing of names and offices held in the organization of Americans United for separation of church and state.

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas, from Dolph Briscoe, Governor, State of Texas, Austin, dated September 12, 1974. Briscoe expresses his appreciation for Carswell's contribution and help in his campaign for re-election, his confidence and support, and his friendship.

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas, from Preston Smith, Governor of Texas, dated March 14, 1972. Smith acknowledges his receipt of the letter from Carswell regarding his views concerning the possibility of a referendum on school busing in Texas. He advises that the referendum on school busing in Texas has been placed on the primary election ballots, but the presidential candidates referendum was not placed on the ballot.

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas, from H. V. Nead CCM General Manager, Abilene Country Club, Abilene, Texas, dated April 4, 1970. Nead expresses his regret that Carswell feels it necessary to submit his resignation as a member of the club.

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas, from H. V. Nead, CCM General Manager, Abilene Country Club, Abilene, Texas, dated April 22, 1970. An acknowledgement from The Board of Directors regarding having accepted Carswell's resignation, with regret, as a member of the club.

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas from Iverson H. Huxford, Editor and Publisher, The Clinch County News, Homerville, Georgia, dated October 7, 1972. Huxford acknowledges his receipt of Carswell's letter which was written to Uncle Zeke and verifies the inquiry made by Carswell regarding the availability of the two spaces next to his mother's grave. He discusses Uncle Zeke's eyesight and advises of the help he gives to him with correspondence, checks and book work. He advises that Uncle Zeke and Dee want to convey their regards to Carswell, their old friend.

A letter written to Tommy Carswell from Jake [J. D. Sandefer, Jr.], Breckenridge, Texas, dated February 29, 1972. Sandefer expresses their appreciation for the "thoughtful long-hand letter" of Sunday the 27th confiding their knowledge that Carswell has similar problems and closes the letter by stating, "It is useless to tell you that we consider you a member of the family".

A letter written to Tommy Carswell from Jake [J. D. Sandefer, Jr.], Breckenridge, Texas, dated July 7, 1972. Sandefer expresses his appreciation to Carswell for his presence during his sad hours. He speaks of his Carrie Lynn as a gallant lady and tells Carswell that he has always felt like he was one of the family.
